Chapter 261: If We Think Twice

Bringing himtself from the brief ponder, Xiao MuChen nodded, answering listlessly, "She’s been great though when I told her about the plan to move she begin to throw a tantrum that it’s been stressing me out."

"Oh dear," AiLin felt worried thinking about LiAi who must have thrown a tantrum exactly because she felt the change was far too sudden and scary. For such a little girl, her world was going to entirely change, making her feel foreign and it’s worrying how it could cause so much anxiety for her. "Maybe we should ask a children psychiatrist? I heard that most children now are supported with the idea of having a psychiatrist for their mental well being."

"Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as you think, she’s simply, throwing a tantrum for now," answered Xiao MuChen, "Anyway about your last scene..."

"Ah," AiLin knew exactly that he was going to speak about the incident. Truthfully it’s been a while since they met as Xiao MuChen hadn’t film at the same time with her the past three days due to an award ceremony that he had to attend. Their last meeting was that horrendous scene of course, and since then he had contacted her through messages, extending his worries but that was all there is to it.

"Everything’s well," she answered him, "Or do you want to ask about why I had reacted so negatively?"

Xiao MuChen gulped, "I can?"

Looking at his face, AiLin weighed if she should tell him the truth. No one wanted their own terrible pasts and traumas to be brought up especially to someone who she couldn’t trust. But somehow she could tell that Xiao MuChen wouldn’t go around parading with her trauma, sharing the news left and right like everyone else. In the first place whenever she told him something, he always kept it to himself which made him a very trustworthy person compared to everyone in her surrounding.

"Assault," she whispered, placing her hand under her chin and propping on the round table beside her, "I was assaulted before like the main character of the novel," she kept it ambiguous, hiding the full extent of it. She didn’t look back at Xiao MuChen’s face thus she didn’t know how his face had palled terribly as if someone had drained his blood in mere seconds. "It was a long time ago, six years even, but surprising how despite the long years since it had happened that I still look back at the memories and find myself shudder? I have been getting better now with all the consultation with the psychiatrist but still being put in that position triggered me."

She heard nothing from Xiao MuChen and didn’t think it was weird as he was someone who would only nod and hum.

She added, "But I shouldn’t have let my response to instead cause further trouble for other actors right?"

"Y... you," He pursed his lips, "Six years ago you were in high school."

"Uh yeah," she answered wondering he was asking such obvious question.

"Have you fallen in love with someone during that time?" Xiao MuChen then startled her with his question.

Taken aback, she questioned what he was asking but didn’t think the question too offensive and didn’t pry further while answering it, "How could I be thinking about anything like love? I wasn’t capable of doing anything back then, I was bullied badly. Only now do I realized that I loved someone but we weren’t able to interact back then to ever confess." Though now they were living every day life happily, holding hands together while watching movies at night, sharing stories from their pasts to their aspiration in the future during dinner, and they had even danced with the moonlight.

Li ZiChen and her had never been happier the last three weeks. As if all those bad pasts that lingered around them were finally lifted up, allowing them to breath and simply enjoy each other’s company.

Xiao MuChen’s eyes shook while AiLin smiled as she thought about Li ZiChen’s face. He was suddenly frightened to his bone, holding his wrists together as he reflected on AiLin’s words. She... this wasn’t what he knew.

She was bullied? Assaulted?

Then...

But how could his late brother’s teacher, Su MengYao keep quiet about this to him?

He didn’t know anything about this- He doesn’t know!

"Then when you were p-" Xiao MuChen sucked his breaths and rose suddenly from his seat, almost as if he was jumping, startling AiLin who saw his eyes that darted around as he suddenly began rubbing his head. "I have to go now," he said as he turned around, "I have another schedule to take care of that I forgot. There are people waiting for me."

"Oh? Take care then," she answered with a smile, not knowing the slightest how the shock from Xiao MuChen’s face wasn’t only caused by surprise but a realization.

She watched then as he walked away and leave, without thinking much of his expression as he left. She continued to reading the script that was prepared when she saw someone approaching her.

Meanwhile in his office, Li ZiChen flipped the document that was given to him by his assistant before placing it down the table, sighing briefly as he then pinched his nose bridge. The document he placed down flipped gently as it fell to the rest of the documents, showing the name "Xiao LiAi" and "Xiao MuChen".

The two investigation he had asked showed him quite a lot of things.

To be frank ever since he first saw LiAi he noticed something he never felt with other children. It was the sense of familiarity even though he had never been too fond of children or knew a lot of them. He had also noticed Xiao MuChen’s actions and worse he had heard from Su MengYao that actually AiLin’s daughter wasn’t fathered by Bai HaiZe yet someone else. Su MengYao claimed to have heard the bullies talking behind the teachers, forming an idea of doing something but then they had been in a loud fight as they claim to one another how they hadn’t fulfilled what was asked of them.

That same day, Su MengYao had also seen Bai HaiZe being brought away by his father in a black imported car, which meant that the same day she wasn’t "saved" by Bai HaiZe and she didn’t sleep with him, rather someone else.

This information bugged Li ZiChen but the one thing that bugged him even more was the fact that Li Ai, Xiao LiAi, was truly Xiao MuChen’s niece.

But they aren’t blood related.

It seems that Li Ai was adopted from the hospital by the couple who had came there for visitation to look at the newborn children that had been put for adoption. LiAi herself didn’t have too many about her birth parents written in the hospital. All except the fact that they had found the newborn baby put in a box and left outside the hospital.

She had just been born with many complication and fearing for the baby life, they had done everything to safe the baby until the fateful day came when Xiao MuChen’s brother saw her.

It was worse.

LiAi’s birth date wasn’t too far compared to the timing when AiLin "aborted" her child.

This informations along with his guts told him everything he needed to know, telling him that what he was feeling now wasn’t mere gut feelings and he had mistaken it.

He tapped his phone, placing it to his ears and then muttered a few order to Tsuki. At first he was taken aback but he had been told not to ask too much and hurriedly agreed with the work assign for him.

Thus that afternoon, LiAi who had just walked out of her elementary school had puffed her cheeks, holding to her bag straps with anger and sadness written on her face.

After fighting for days with her uncle, she was in a bad mood. It didn’t help that she found out she was moving and soon she wouldn’t be able to meet her friends or even AiLin.

"Hi," a sudden voice startled her.

She flinched and carefully turned around. Seeing a tall man she shrank back but didn’t completely sank to nowhere as she saw that the young man had the school badge, meaning they were the adults safe to talk with.

"Oh sorry," Tsuki fretted as he bent down, "My brother told me that the best way to befriend a child is to lower our gaze to the same height as them but I towered so tall in front of you like that... I hope I didn’t scare you."

LiAi grinned, "No! I’m not scared! Brother are you a new teacher?"

"Hm? No," he answered before pointing to the two flags he was holding, one in red and the other in green, "I’m assigned as a volunteer to help children cross the road! I have also made a pledge of using my own body to shield them if things comes to that point."

LiAi blinked, wondering what he meant as Tsuki rubbed his ears shyly.

"A- anyway, aren’t you going to cross the road too?"

LiAi shook her head, "I’m waiting for uncle Xiao!"

"Oh I see-" smiling, Tsuki readily raised his hand to pull her hair subtly when he suddenly felt a sharp look behind him and snapped his eyes behind.

Someone... Someone was looking at them.
