Chapter 128: In A Headlock

The mess was quick to spread like wildfire. AiLin watched as Mrs and Mr Jiang tried to escape to no avail but all this time she found something suspicious. That was the disappearance of Jiang MengYao. Oddly that damned bastard was standing in the stage the entire time but right before Mr Lu could announce that they had lost the contract, he had disappeared out of thin air.

Even Jiang NianNian wasn’t spared from the mob’s anger where everyone demanded for an explanation and was yelling at the top of their throat for how they had been scammed. So how could Jiang MengYao slipped out so well?

For some reason, a terrible premonition entered her heart.

As she walked toward Li ZiChen to discuss this, Su HaiTan had caught sight of her and ran up toward her, "Miss Hua, how do you know about those rumors regarding Miss Lu?"

AiLin lifted her face and stared at the young man. She was confused as even though his best friend, Jiang NianNian was struggling there, he seems to pay no attention to her and was instead more interested in running toward her. She looked behind him and reminded the obvious, "I think your companion needs help."

Su HaiTan answered by moving his head forward, "You’re different from other people, Miss Hua. You’re unique. Everyone else feels like a pawn on a chessboard and you feel like the one who moves them. That makes me feels so—" he reached out his hand toward her, his fingers inching toward her shoulders that made her frown before she could swat the hands, she saw a shadow moving quickly in front of her.

AiLin then felt her hand pulled and a strong back shielding in front of her. She saw Li ZiChen’s eyebrows that were already turned furrowed, "So interested in AiLin are you?"

"Well yes," Su HaiTan answered with a smile, "Isn’t she a fascinating thing?"

"She’s a person," reminded Li ZiChen, his smile hanging tensely that mad people around him nervous. "Not an object or a thing. Keep your distance."

Li ZiChen then took AiLin’s hands as they walked away from the party hall. Having seen enough chaos, they managed to slip out of the mobs into the entrance of the hotel. There Li ZiChen pressed his forehead and stared at the ceiling above with a look of annoyance, "You should be careful of Su HaiTan."

"You know him?" She asked as she could see his warning was clear for a reason and knowing Li ZiChen, she could only guess Su HaiTan was a terrible news.

"The circle of wealthy children aren’t too big. Everyone knows each other," he said and sighed, "So most of the time, we know the worse from each other’s better than anyone else."

"What makes you so tense about Su HaiTan?" She asked curiously as Li ZiChen wasn’t usually annoyed even by the vermins that bother around him. He was oddly pissed off looking at Su HaiTan today which meant that they had some history. Seeing how Su HaiTan answered Li ZiChen in a familiar tone, they seem to know each other as well.

Li ZiChen and her had walked toward a quieter place of the entrance where they were standing behind a tangerine tree. He crossed his arms and looked at it before he answered, "Your grandmother was the one who named him. Su Family was always on the good side of Elder Hua so she doted on him more than she doted on Mrs Valentine."

"Even more than my mother.." AiLin repeated. "So Su HaiTan is really close to my grandmother?" Seeing he nod his head, she could guess why he was apprehensive now.

Since her grandmother turn out to be a dangerous person who hated his own daughters and any female descendants from their family, it’s expected that the old woman was thinking on finding a way to destroy her from her hospital room.

"Do you think Su HaiTan was sent by my grandmother to check up on me?"

"Check up is a positive vocabulary," Li ZiChen inched closer, "The better word for his action is spying on you. He’s not someone you would want to mingle with. Something is missing in his head that makes him believe that any path he took is always correct and right."

"Did you fight with him before?" She wondered the animosity between them that could’ve came deeper apart from her grandmother’s involvement.

"Back then when there was a party," Li ZiChen said with tight clenched jaw, his expression was still dark though he spoke to her in a tender note, "JingYi is a little slow than his peers so I usually took care of him but there were times where he run around and I will lose sight of him. It was the same that night, the adults were particularly gathered around me because I won a competition. In a moment of inattentiveness, I forgot to look at JingYi and I found him gone. We were still in elementary school and you can expect a child of that age to do stupid things."

A child couldn’t differentiate wrong and right, they were bound to make mistakes so what was it that Su HaiTan had done?

He continued his story, "I can forgive any stupid actions done by a kid but not when he drowns my own younger brother on a pond because JingYi almost overfeed his Koi Fishes."

AiLin was taken aback as her back flinched. She frowned, "He tried to drown JingYi? Such psychopath? I couldn’t have imagined that just from seeing his face," though she does felt a weird vibe coming off from him which made her really uncomfortable. Now she could see the reason. "What about the Su Family? Didn’t they scold or look into Su Haitian’s bloodthirsty behavior?"

"No," scoffed Li ZiChen, "Su Family only told us to understand that Su HaiTan treats those Koi fishes like his own siblings and he thought JingYi was trying to harm his precious siblings and retaliate on it. They were insistent that they had a fight and JingYi fell to the pond— that Su HaiTan didn’t try to drown him but that JingYi fell and slipped into the pond."

"But you were there. Did you see it?" She frowned.

He smiled, thinking how AiLin was already on his side no matter what which elated him beyond words. She didn’t suspect him first as a liar but instead asked him of what had happened first.

"I saw it clearly how Su HaiTan was holding JingYi’s neck and pushed his face into the pond. I was a child and there was no working cameras on the pond that night. Oddly, it was broken only an hour before the accident. Everything was too coincidental but I was a child and I couldn’t really do much to prove my words. Because of that my family had been in a tense air with Su Family. Elder Hua had always protected Su Family like her golden egg laying goose so when my parents were about to bring the case to court... you know the rest."

"That Elder Hua kidnapped you and tried to harm you?"

Li ZiChen nodded, "She’s always on our bad side and I doubt that was the only reason why she had tried to kill me," he then paused and dimmed into a hum, "I heard a funny story from your mother. She said that your grandmother, Elder Hua, had always followed a psychic’s words. She’s a well known psychic who had always came out with an accurate description of one’s future. The psychic was the one who told Elder Hua that one day a son of Li Family would be the cause of their family’s demise."

"Li Family... you," she pointed and she stared at his face that was serious in baffledness, "No way. She really believed that?"

"She did. She believes every single words that came from the psychic. So you know now that your grandmother is insane beyond means."

"Oh goodness, I hope I don’t inherit that insanity," whispered AiLin under her breaths but now she wondered if all this time the insane part of herself was inherited from her unhinged grandmother. "I thought wealthy people would have common sense."

"Best believe that there are a lot of wealthy people like your grandmother. Worse, they would even kill to satisfy their desire."

"Like a cult?"

"Like sacrificing lives for their success," Li ZiChen said before he pushed himself to stand straight, "Though I personally never believe in things like those. My parents aren’t too keen on the idea of believing in the non existent either. In any case, though we cannot prove yet that Su HaiTan is someone sent by your grandmother, I will ask you to be on your highest guard when you’re alone with him. If you can, never be alone with him," he warned though he knew his warnings wouldn’t be easy to heed with her fervent desire for revenge. "If you ever be alone with him, then please tell me first."

Hearing him saying "please" and begging for her own safety made her feel a little guilty.

She smiled wide and raised her pinky, "I promise I won’t be alone with him, don’t worry."

"Good, well then I—"

"Mr Li! Please, please listen to me for a minute," a crying man came up rushing toward Li ZiChen in a blink of an eye. In such desperation, he had pushed AiLin aside roughly, causing for her to be pushed back only to find that there were a commotion that had occurred as all the guests rushed outside of the party hall yelling to each other of how Mr Lu and Mr Jiang had ran away and how they had to chase after them as soon as possible.

"AiLin!" Li ZiChen disregard the crying man who was holding back at him in a tight clutch. He could see her hand that was raised to show him her direction but soon enough she was swept away by the waves of people and disappear amongst the rest of the crowd.

"M- Mr Li.." the crying man saw that Li ZiChen finally turn his face to look at him. At first the crying man felt relieved but then his face turned horribly white upon realizing the raw wrath that had settled on Li ZiChen’s face.

At once, Li ZiChen’s hands squeezed on his neck, "You did that on purpose. Who. Sent. You?" He demanded angrily, enough to cause the chaotic crowed to die down in silence as everyone shuddered seeing the scene.
