Chapter 123: Bleeding Palms

Su HaiTan, the young master loved by everyone around him. He had the face of someone who appeared sweet, making him loved regardless of his own actions and doings. Whatever he wishes to do or wanted to do, no one dared to say no to him, they couldn’t bring themselves to deny his requests including his parents who spoils him to the point of making sure that whatever he wish would be granted. Being the only son of a wealthy family, Su HaiTan grew up with privilege, never lacking in anything whether opportunity, chances, or things he covet.

But AiLin was his direct opposite. Being someone who was despised by her own family, she was different from Su HaiTan who grew up being loved. Perhaps that was the reason why Su HaiTan was extremely curious of her, was because how polar opposite would tend to attract each other.

But they weren’t aware of each other’s surrounding and AiLin wasn’t frankly interested to Su HaiTan at all. He was younger than her, his appearance with his wild curly hair and his smirk that curl the left side of his lips were akin to one of her bullies in the past that made her to instantly on guard upon seeing him.

"I don’t need friends," she said, her voice curt that made the young master who has never been rejected and always loved by people around him to look at her with clear surprise as his jaw fell down. "You can find another friend, like Miss Jiang."

"But I want to be friends with you," said Su HaiTan again. "Miss AiLin, don’t you know who I am?"

"Even if you are the son of the moon and stars and the sky above or a god of war, I don’t want to be friends," she answered again. "Don’t you know that betrayals come from people close to you? I’d like to keep my circle small."

"But you are friends with Mr Li? Aren’t you afraid that he would betray you?"

A sudden silence appears between them. She turned to study Su HaiTan’s face, expecting this young master to be speaking with a grin but came an innocent face in front of her who seemed to have spoken without thinking and was just raising a question "just because".

"He’s different," she answered. They were in a contract and he had proved he wouldn’t betray her. But can she really leave all her trust to one person? Like she did in high school... and then repeat everything? She ruffled her hair as one question could easily turn her emotions upside down, making her doubt everything so foolishly to the point of shame.

"Oh so you don’t mind being betrayed by him?"

She turned, this time snapping her glare back at Su HaiTan who had spoken as he wished. Seeing that he doesn’t understand her glare made her sure that no one ever reprimand him for his words and always encourage him even when he was wrong, the dangerous type of parenting.

"Whatever suits you," and then as she turned around, Su HaiTan called up.

"How about this!" Su HaiTan managed to stop her by running in front of her. He reached out his hands and then pulling out a set of bracelet that was made from white jade. A glance was all it took for AiLin to recognize it as an antique. "A token of friendship?"

She narrowed her gaze and sighed. She wondered if this young master had been used by the people around him but was never aware of it. Perhaps that is the reason and perhaps that was why he had foolishly given her the white jade bracelet, hoping to befriend her by doing so.

Wasn’t this paying for friendship?

"Do you keep doing this?" She asked and he looked at her in questions. "Giving items to people, gifts, for friendship?"

"Isn’t it normal?" He asked her back and she simply stared at him and then narrowed her eyes.

"Do that and you will surround yourself with bloodsuckers forever," and she walked away, leaving him behind to the door of the party hall when Jiang NianNian walked outside in a hurry to search for Su HaiTan.

The two of them came face to face and seeing the shock and nervousness on Jiang NianNian’s face for a brief of minutes until she decided to pull her grin and once again act like someone who has never had anything to fear of by looking down on AiLin.

"Miss AiLin," called Jiang NianNian, "Glad to see you, I was hoping that I could catch a few conversation with you but I saw Mr Li with another woman earlier, shouldn’t you hurry up before— huh." Jiang NianNian saw AiLin who had ignored her and walked inside the party as though she had gone deaf. She stared at the closed door behind AiLin’s back and her face was quickly flushed red from embarrassment as a few people caught the scene. Someone chuckled, and others commented,

"This must be Miss Jiang’s first time being ignored."

"She must be so embarrassed but who does she think she is? To easily call up to the young miss of Hua Family?"

Su HaiTan saw the surrounding whispers and heard them clear. He also saw the red burn on Jiang NianNian’s face as clear as day as he made his way toward her. His lips was with a smile but his gaze was unreadable, "Miss Hua seems like a really fun person to befriend with."

"H- huh... are you interested in her?" Jiang NianNian’s round eyes seemed innocent but there was a trace of envy that turn her eyes green at once. "You shouldn’t bother with her, she is in a relationship with Mr Li."

"Silly," Su HaiTan answered, "It’s noting such as that. Friendship won’t matter whether the other has a partner or not right? And it’s not as if they are married."

"You’re right," she has to be a doormat to please Su HaiTan’s self esteem. She couldn’t possibily let go the chance of marrying the young master of Su Family to save her face.

"Plus, grandma Hua and I have always been close," said Su HaiTan as his eyes turned crescent when he smiles, "I can’t help but wanting to befriend her granddaughter as well."

Meanwhile inside the party hall, AiLin looked around to find Li ZiChen. Surprisingly, he was nowhere to be found. Not at the location where she had left him, nor anywhere near Mei Hua who seemed to also left the party early for good. As she was alone, she noticed no one else dared to come close to her, as if fearing her when earlier on she had seen how desperate they were to get on her good side as if they had just seen her guardian dog barking ferociously at them and was now backing away in fear of being bitten to death by the neck. She wasn’t keen on starting a conversation or asking them directly for why they were behaving so oddly, therefore she decided to simply ignore them and walk toward the drink counters when she suddenly heard the rasping breaths behind her.

Turning her head back, she found the handsome face of Li ZiChen that was marred with worry. She saw the cloud of gloom hazing his face and rushed to place her hand on his back, paying it gently as she noticed his breathings were uneven as if he had just had a panic attack. She whispered, "What happened? Wait, let me get some drink for you," it wasn’t far from the drink counter and she had just turned around when she felt the tight grasp around her wrist and had to turn back to find the frustrated glare on Li ZiChen’s eyes.

"Don’t run away from me again."

She stared at him for a couple of seconds and found herself nodding.

As they moved toward the private seats so they won’t catch to many eyes than they already had, AiLin saw his palms and fingers that were so red as if it had been scrubbed cleanly until the skin began to peel off. Staring at it, she was sure that Li ZiChen had gotten out to the washroom to wash his hands and then rush to search for her.

"Don’t mistaken anything, Mei Hua didn’t came to bring any news from my mother," he then sighed as he pressed his aching forehead, "We have phones, we don’t need to send people like how it was centuries ago to send messages."

"T- that’s true... then why do you..." she wanted to ask why he had washed his hands but found it not so right question. "Why do you look like this?"

"Didn’t I tell you already?" He looked up at her, his almond eyes clear but it was still dark with a certain annoyance, "I hate being touched by other women."

She thought it was a figure of speech but now seeing his hands that almost bled from how rough he had washed it, she was certain it was more than a mere hate of being touch.

He spoke with a heavy tone, "When I was young, you heard what had happened. Since then I can’t be touched by anyone. It was fine at first but gradually as my mental refuses to be touch by people I don’t trust, I find it hard to touch anyone at all. My family had to struggle with it. After a few years to adulthood, I can touch my father and JingYi again but I could never come in contact with my mother at all much less with other women of any ages. I couldn’t possibly be close to Mei Hua when this condition is affecting me, so don’t ever think that bi- girl was ever close to me."
