Chapter 103: A Dear Novel

"Miss Ai," said the staff who had been calling each actress to the audition room.

AiLin sat still even as her name was called. Only after she was called for the third time did her eyes brightened as if it had snapped out from her daze and she walked toward the person.

She had read the part of the script which the director, co director, and the writer wanted to see and after reading the script, she realized that most of the lines were the ones that she had particularly liked when reading the novel. So much so that she had memorized it by heart.

It wasn’t a lot of lines, in fact it was only three paragraphs consisting of a few words each. The priority of the audition today didn’t seem to check whether the actress could memorize the lines but to see whether they could deliver the raw emotions that seemed to be the main theme of the story.

But for some reason, AiLin’s mind was clear.. so clear that it was empty or perhaps numb.

Reading the lines that the main actress should have said instead tug her heartstrings as those words... were something she had said before.

Meanwhile, in the audition room, out of the three people who were meant to choose the new actress was a man named Director Chu. He had been looking over the past twenty actresses who had came to perform today but none of them struck clear to him. Not only known for his terrific movies, Director Chu is also known for being strict and especially relentless when it comes to the smallest mistake— a perfectionist who would often gathered bad rumors due to his strict nature.

But he love movies more than anything which had stemmed the reason why he was extremely picky to choosing actress. So much so that if normal audition would only have around sixty actresses to come, there was around two hundred actresses who had came to audition for the past three days.

"As expected the best one for the past three days have been Miss Mei Hua."

A male writer spoke out.

Director Chu listened quietly while the other people stared at his face, to study if he would agree to it but deep down the Director scoff. The reason why the writer was so partial toward Mei Hua was because they had worked together before. But Director Chu suspect there was something more than simply being "friends" that made this male writer to always spoke so positively about Mei Hua in front of him.

If he had to suspect it would be how Mei Hua’s first debut movie as an actress was also one of the box offices. In simple words, Mei Hua has somehow managed to bribe the writers and directors for her roles.

Director Chu never cared about such things. As long as his movie would look like a masterpiece in his head, he didn’t care if he had to hire a previous convict. He rolled his eyes as another director uttered in agreement to the male writer, "Indeed, it has been quite troublesome to find someone who could give off the sense of hopelessness as Miss Mei Hua. To think that she’s still so young and yet she could give out such an amazing performance. I can see why she has been getting the fame and attention the past six months of her career."

True, thought Director Chu.

Indeed, Miss Mei Hua was a talented actress. Perhaps it was because how she was always trained since a young age by her family but Director Chu didn’t quite particularly liked the performance she showed today.

"What do you think Director Chu?" Asked the male writer again, hoping for a positive remark.

But Director Chu spoke the opposite, "It was fine. Not great enough for me to choose her."

"What?" The male writer said, surprised and taken aback.

Director Chu frowned as the male writer seemed confused by his opinion. He explained out loud with a cynical voice, "She seems to come from a great family. It’s good to be born from a warm family and I hope no one has to live their life with families who hate them but the main character of the story had never felt happiness. Meanwhile, Miss Mei Hua is too bright. She’s too happy, she’s too positive, and even if she tried to sob her sorrow away with tears, I don’t feel compel to believe that she had ever went a horrific incident. Her acting is good but I don’t feel sympathetic to her tears, all I thought was why is she crying so sadly for someone who was supposed to feel so numb. I didn’t feel sympathetic, I felt odd and annoyed."

"Huh? But doesn’t that mean you want someone who had went to a horrific experience? How is there someone like that?"

The other director cleared his throat, "You’re not quite write Writer Xiang. What Director Chu meant is someone’s gaze. Miss Mei Hua never seemed to be utterly upset and that could ruin the movie’s entire theme. It doesn’t mean that she need to experience something terrible that would tear her spirit, but she didn’t put a believable enough act for us to think that she was really someone who had went through abuse. The writer remark that this book was made for those who needed comfort, it would be terrible for the audience if they can’t begin to sympathize with the main character, right Director Chu?"

"Indeed," said Director Chu with a huff.

The director who had spoken in Director Chu’s side was director Gu. Director Gu then turned toward the young man who seemed to be in a deep thought while listening to the director and writer’s conversation, "What do you think Mister Li JingYi?"

"I have to agree," Li JingYi said. Though Mei Hua is his best friend and crush since childhood, the acting was so not believable though it was a great act. "We can see the other actresses performance first before making any further choice. My brother— ahem, I mean CEO LI— had told me to made sure that the actress has been hired correctly this time so we wouldn’t put shame the writer and the novel’s fame."

Li JingYi sighed as he couldn’t see Mei Hua as the perfect actress for the movie, especially due to its extremely heavy topic. Mei Hua’s life was always so bubbly and that what had charmed him but for Director Chu, her acting was lackluster. It was right in its trick and skill but wrong in its execution.

He questioned if he would need to bring more actresses for the movie as the others after and before Mei Hua was much more lacking than her. Spending another four days would be extremely tiring but he needed to do this since this was the first time Li ZiChen, his beloved older brother, had given him a trust to take care of a movie’s production. Not only this was the first time Li ZiChen ever funded a full movie’s production, he had given all the right to him instead. The responsibility felt like a deep trust from his brother and Li JingYi swore to make this movie perfect at all cost.

He remembered the book "Death by Your Hands" which filled his brother’s bookshelves and particularly aware that this is his brother’s favorite book. This was enough reason for Li JingYi to be more critical and even if he doesn’t want to disappoint Mei Hua, the young man was always brought up fair and never impartial.

That’s why when the door was opened and a familiar face entered to the audition room, Li JingYi broke into a fit of confusion, puzzled to seeing the face of the woman who he believed had haunted his brother for years!
