Chapter 625: Chapter 625 Qiqi is calling me

The night was relatively calm. If Fu Shinian hadn’t woken up in the middle of the night to find Su Mu missing, it might have truly remained peaceful.

Sleeping pills had been added to their milk before bed, in a small dosage. Normally, Su Mu would sleep until dawn. Fu Shinian had always struggled to sleep soundly, but perhaps the exhaustion from the past half-month had finally caught up to him, leaving him drained. Because of this, he hadn’t even heard Su Mu get up during the night.

When Fu Shinian woke up and realized Su Mu wasn’t by his side, he broke out into a cold sweat almost instantly, not even bothering to put on his shoes as he sprinted out of the master bedroom. He didn’t care what time it was or whether his voice might disturb others. As soon as he stepped out of the room, he shouted Su Mu’s name loudly.

By the time he reached the first-floor living room, Jiang Bei had emerged from the guest room, her face full of anxiety:

"What’s wrong?"

Fu Shinian seemed not to have heard Jiang Bei’s question. He frantically looked around, but there was no sign of Su Mu in the living room. His heart sank immediately.

Auntie Lin and the others had also come out by then. Seeing Fu Shinian in his current state, they all seemed to anticipate something. Looking at their fearful faces, Fu Shinian wanted to vent his anger, wanted to interrogate them about their incompetence. But he held back.

After all, he was the one closest to Su Mu. If even he hadn’t noticed Su Mu leaving, how could they possibly have?

Jiang Bei descended the stairs and looked at Fu Shinian:

"Su Mu is gone?"

"Mm." Fu Shinian responded briefly and didn’t say anything else. He headed straight for the foyer, clearly ready to go out. However, snow had been falling all night, and Fu Shinian hadn’t put on shoes, wearing only a thin pajama top. Jiang Bei tried to call out and remind him, but by the time she spoke, Fu Shinian had already opened the door and stepped outside.

A gust of cold wind hit, and Jiang Bei involuntarily shivered.

She instructed Auntie Lin to go upstairs and fetch Fu Shinian’s clothes before hurrying to the floor-to-ceiling window to make a call to Ji Nanfeng. The call was answered quickly. Though Ji Nanfeng’s voice sounded groggy, it was filled with urgency:

"What’s happened? Did something go wrong?"

Jiang Bei stared at the scene outside the window, watching as Fu Shinian walked around the snowy yard and still found nothing. She spoke: "Su Mu is missing."

Although no one had found Su Mu within Bishui Yuntian, the snowfall from the night before had left its mark, allowing Fu Shinian to clearly notice tire tracks leading out of the garage. The garage door hadn’t been closed, and Su Mu’s car was gone.

When Fu Shinian returned to the house, Auntie Lin had already brought his clothes downstairs. Fu Shinian didn’t bother changing; he hastily threw on the coat, didn’t put on any socks, slipped into his shoes, grabbed a car key, and prepared to leave.

Jiang Bei wanted to go with him but ultimately remained silent. She understood Fu Shinian’s current state of mind. It wasn’t convenient for her to accompany him now.

Even though they knew Su Mu had driven away, no one knew where she had gone. On the villa district road, her tire tracks were still visible initially, but as they merged onto the main road, the tracks became increasingly difficult to distinguish. Despite it being the early hours, there were still quite a few vehicles on the road.

Fu Shinian was aimless, forcing himself to stay calm. Su Mu’s destination had to be connected to Qiqi. But there were many places in the city tied to Qiqi—schools, rental apartments, the studio, Gui Ning Residence, even Jiang Bei’s apartment—all held traces of Qiqi.

Fu Shinian had no idea where to start.

But just because he didn’t know didn’t mean he wouldn’t search. Fu Shinian had to go place by place. Fortunately, not long after, Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu both called him separately. The group split up to search different locations, each returning with the same result.

No sign of Su Mu.

By now, an hour had passed since Fu Shinian had started driving. He found himself parked in front of Qiqi’s kindergarten. Staring at the tightly closed school gate, he couldn’t help but imagine Qiqi bounding out from behind it, cheerfully running up to him, calling out "Dad." But until the warmth in his eyes faded and the vision dissolved into nothingness, he finally realized—it was just another illusion.

Qiqi was gone.

This was the truth.

It was at that moment that Fu Shinian realized where Su Mu was most likely to be. Without wasting another second, he floored the gas pedal and headed to the West Suburb.

The road leading out of the city had few cars. Once outside the urban area, tire tracks became sparse. As Fu Shinian got closer to the abandoned parking lot where Qiqi had last disappeared, he noticed more distinctly that there was only one set of tire tracks ahead.

This confirmed his thoughts.

The snow was heavy, making driving difficult, yet Fu Shinian maintained his speed. His only focus was finding Su Mu as quickly as possible. Luckily, the journey wasn’t fraught with danger. When he finally turned onto a small path and spotted Su Mu’s car in the distance, Fu Shinian breathed a sigh of relief.

He parked the car, pushed the door open, and stepped out. The snow in the suburbs was deeper than in the city. With each step, it felt like stomping into cotton. Dressed only in pajamas, without socks, Fu Shinian trudged through the snow, bracing against the howling north wind that seemed to freeze him to his core. But he didn’t care; he strode quickly toward the parking lot.

This place had already been the site of two murders, and its eeriness was suffocating. Aside from the headlights of Fu Shinian’s car left on at the entrance, there was no other source of light. But Fu Shinian was certain—Su Mu was here. She had to be.

He didn’t linger on the first floor, heading straight to the second basement level where Qiqi had met her fate. The darkness was absolute; the car’s lights couldn’t reach this far. Fu Shinian turned on his phone’s flashlight, and with just a glance, he saw Su Mu sitting slumped against a stone pillar as if she were asleep.

That stone pillar—was the same one Qiqi had been tied to when the incident happened.

Here, in this haunting place, was where Qiqi had last been seen.

Su Mu had come here, consumed by her longing for Qiqi.

The temperature in this space seemed several degrees colder than outside. Su Mu was dressed in only thin pajamas. Fu Shinian furrowed his brows deeply, walking toward her while stripping off his coat. As he approached, he wrapped it tightly around her.

The moment his warmth enveloped Su Mu, she opened her eyes faintly, unfocused and murmured softly:

"Qiqi..."

Fu Shinian’s heart ached sharply. He took her hand: "It’s me."

"Shinian?"

"Yes."

"Why are you here?"

It was the most she’d spoken since Qiqi went missing. Fu Shinian tried to help her up, but she gripped his hand firmly instead, holding on tightly: "Listen."

Fu Shinian froze instinctively, slowing even his breathing: "What?"

"Qiqi is calling me."
