Chapter 624: Find Qiqi Before That
Chapter 624: Chapter 624: Find Qiqi Before That
Fu Shinian had considered keeping the old lady’s situation a secret from Su Mu for the time being. In her current state, she seemed incapable of bearing anything more. But such things could not be hidden for long. The old lady’s health, even at its best, could only be maintained for six months. Now, with Qiqi missing and emotions running high, her mind restless to the point she couldn’t sleep properly, Fu Shinian truly didn’t know when he would receive a call from Gui Ning Residence.
Instead of letting Su Mu passively accept the news later, it might be better to tell her now, so at least she could mentally prepare herself.
But the kind of reaction Su Mu might have to this mental preparation was something Fu Shinian couldn’t predict. So after he said these words, his eyes never left Su Mu. He was genuinely worried she might completely collapse. Yet as minutes passed, it seemed fine—not calm, but not an extreme reaction, either.
Watching her for a few seconds, Fu Shinian slowly realized that Su Mu didn’t fully understand what his words meant—or perhaps she didn’t want to understand.
In the end, she was an adult. Even faced with her daughter’s disappearance, she couldn’t bury her head in the sand and ignore everything entirely. After staring at Fu Shinian for a long while, she blinked. Just as Fu Shinian was about to think she wouldn’t say anything, she gently moved and reached out to hold Fu Shinian’s right hand, which hung by his side.
Fu Shinian was startled, surprised by Su Mu’s response.
This was the first time since Qiqi went missing that Su Mu had proactively moved closer to him.
"Grandmother..." Her voice was so hoarse that unless you saw the person in front of you, you could hardly believe this was Su Mu speaking. "I want to see her."
Fu Shinian chuckled lightly:
"Tomorrow, after the snow stops, I’ll take you there."
Su Mu didn’t say anything else. When Fu Shinian tried to reverse his hand to clasp her slightly cool hands, Su Mu let go of him. She turned her gaze to the window again, silent, as if the dialogue just now had been nothing but an illusion conjured by Fu Shinian.
At dinner, it was rare for Su Mu not to retreat upstairs. She sat at the dining table but lacked much appetite. Fu Shinian kept putting food onto her plate, and she ate a little after some urging. However, before she could digest it, the overwhelming nausea pushed her to stand and rush to the bathroom.
Fu Shinian followed her, carefully tending to her until she calmed down. Then, distress evident in his voice, he asked:
"Do you want to eat more?"
Su Mu didn’t speak, but after a few seconds, she nodded.
Fu Shinian was somewhat taken aback.
When the two returned to the dining room, Jiang Bei was on the phone. Seeing them come out, he lowered his voice slightly and said, "I need to ask Susu’s opinion. I’ll get back to you later."
After speaking, he hung up. Su Mu might not have heard what Jiang Bei said—her expression remained unchanged. She returned to her seat and prepared to eat again. However, Fu Shinian moved her plate away and said:
"Don’t eat that anymore. Auntie Lin made some congee in the kitchen; drink a little instead."
Su Mu didn’t object and nodded. Seeing this, Auntie Lin headed into the kitchen without waiting for Fu Shinian’s instruction. Fu Shinian sighed quietly. Ever since Qiqi’s disappearance, the entire Bishui Yuntian had felt like a taut string, every person walking on eggshells, ready to snap at any moment.
Fu Shinian glanced at Jiang Bei:
"Who was on the phone just now?"
Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu before replying:
"Wen Han. He said Wen Shaoyuan has been discharged from the hospital and wants to come visit Su Mu. Do you think it’s appropriate?"
Wen Shaoyuan had been shot in the shoulder, and the surgery went well. Fu Shinian and Su Mu hadn’t visited him in the hospital since. They knew they ought to go, but with Qiqi still missing, neither of them had the emotional energy for it. Seeing Wen Shaoyuan would only serve as a reminder of Qiqi.
A few days ago, Fu Shinian heard from Qiao Yu that although Wen Shaoyuan’s physical recovery was good, he seemed to have entirely changed. Fu Shinian hadn’t seen it firsthand, but Qiao Yu said Wen Shaoyuan’s condition was likely similar to Su Mu’s.
Not wanting to see people, not wanting to talk.
Whether Wen Shaoyuan should come was a decision Fu Shinian couldn’t make. He wasn’t sure if Su Mu might suddenly break down, so the choice had to come from her. When Auntie Lin brought the congee over, Fu Shinian took the bowl, tested its temperature, and moved his chair closer to Su Mu.
She remained silent, seemingly ignoring Jiang Bei and Fu Shinian’s conversation. Only when Fu Shinian held a spoon to her mouth did she come back to herself. Fu Shinian smiled faintly:
"I’ll feed you."
Su Mu hesitated for a few seconds before obediently opening her mouth. Jiang Bei, watching from the side, could see it more and more clearly: Su Mu had become like a child, while Fu Shinian cared for her as though terrified he might fail. In truth, it wasn’t just Su Mu—the weight of everything was visibly, rapidly wearing down Fu Shinian as well.
After feeding Su Mu a few bites, Fu Shinian cautiously began:
"Susu, Wen Han called earlier..."
Fu Shinian carefully monitored Su Mu’s expression. "He said Shaoyuan wants to come see you. Do you..."
Su Mu glanced at Fu Shinian, seemingly unsure of his intention. He had to make his words plainer:
"Do you agree?"
Several seconds later, Su Mu nodded, remaining silent.
After Jiang Bei arranged with Wen Han the time for Shaoyuan to visit tomorrow, Su Mu headed upstairs. Fu Shinian stayed with her. As usual, Su Mu didn’t immediately return to the master bedroom but instead went to the adjacent room, which was Qiqi’s. Strictly speaking, it wasn’t Qiqi’s room but a guest bedroom where Qiqi rarely stayed. However, much of her clothing was stored there, and lately, Su Mu visited the room every night before going to sleep.
When Auntie Lin came up carrying a glass of milk, Fu Shinian was leaning against the doorframe of Qiqi’s room, watching Su Mu lie quietly on the bed, holding Qiqi’s clothes. Auntie Lin glanced into the room as well and exhaled softly:
"This isn’t a solution."
Fu Shinian echoed:
"But who has a solution?"
Aside from bringing Qiqi back, there seemed to be no remedy for Su Mu’s pain.
Yet at this moment, Fu Shinian couldn’t do that. He couldn’t bring Qiqi back because he didn’t know where she was or what she might be enduring.
Taking the milk from Auntie Lin, Fu Shinian waved her away; she sighed again and left. Alone, Fu Shinian stood still for a few seconds before stepping closer. He knew Su Mu wasn’t asleep, nor was she crying. Her tears seemed to have dried up in those initial days.
Now, the only way she expressed her emotions was through indifference.
Indifference to the entire world, to the point where one day, perhaps, she would no longer care for this world at all.
This was what Fu Shinian feared most at the moment.
He just hoped that before Su Mu gave up on the world, he could find Qiqi.
