Chapter 626: Chapter 626 I Didn’t Want This Either

Fu Shinian’s heart skipped a beat as he tilted his head, listening carefully. But apart from the howling wind outside, he heard nothing.

Su Mu had already stood up from the ground. After a few seconds of silence in place, she started searching around. Fu Shinian followed closely behind her, no longer able to say the words, "It’s just an auditory illusion."

Looking at Su Mu like this, he truly didn’t know whether he should be the one to tell her the truth, or let her discover it herself. But no matter which option he chose, the final outcome would be the same: disappointment.

The coat draped on Su Mu slipped to the ground. Fu Shinian bent down to pick it up, intending to help her put it back on, but Su Mu suddenly stepped back, as if something had provoked her, staring at his face like he was a stranger.

Fu Shinian gazed at her, his tone softening significantly:

"Susu, put on your coat before continuing, okay?"

"Why aren’t you searching?" Su Mu looked at Fu Shinian. Her eyes shifted from confusion to anger: "Why aren’t you looking for Qiqi? Have you stopped wanting to find her? Is that it?"

Fu Shinian shook his head:

"No."

"Then go search. Why are you sticking by my side?" Su Mu stepped forward and shoved at him: "Go look for Qiqi! It’s snowing; she’ll be cold! What if she gets sick? Don’t you care?"

Fu Shinian staggered back several steps as Su Mu pushed him, staying silent all the way until the stairwell. Caught off guard, Fu Shinian nearly fell but managed to steady himself against the wall. That was when he stopped her:

"Susu, I care. I’ve been looking the whole time, I haven’t given up on Qiqi, I—"

"Then why are you following me?"

"You ran out here alone; I was worried."

"And Qiqi?" Su Mu stared coldly at Fu Shinian: "Qiqi is with someone who could hurt her at any moment, and you’re not worried? You’re not searching for her? What are you worrying about me for? What is there about me that needs worrying? Are you afraid I’ll die? I won’t, Fu Shinian."

Breaking free from his hands, Su Mu shook her head:

"I won’t die. If I die, Qiqi will come back to find me gone, and she’d be heartbroken. She loves me so much—how could I bear to see her upset?"

Fu Shinian heaved a barely audible sigh:

"Susu, come home with me, please? You’ll freeze out here. If Qiqi comes back and you’ve collapsed, she’ll be just as heartbroken."

Su Mu said nothing, as if she hadn’t heard him at all. After a few seconds, she slowly crouched down, burying her head in her knees and wrapping her arms tightly over herself. Fu Shinian let her pour out her emotions, listening as her muffled sobs grew louder and then rose into near-wailing cries, until she was screaming as though venting.

Had she not started clawing at her own hair in near-madness, Fu Shinian might still have let her continue. But seeing her like this—like she was punishing herself—he could no longer stand by. He pulled Su Mu into his arms, gently soothing her:

"It’s all right, it’s all right... I’ll find Qiqi, I’ll find her..."

Upstairs, there came the sound of a car engine, followed by hurried footsteps. Fu Shinian wasn’t worried; at this time of day, anyone showing up here was likely to be either Qiao Yu or Ji Nanfeng, whom he had contacted earlier.

Su Mu wept uncontrollably in his embrace. When Qiao Yu and Ji Nanfeng came downstairs, this was the scene they saw. For a moment, the two stood silently at the stairwell, exchanged a look but said nothing. After a few seconds, Qiao Yu stepped forward, picked up the coat that had fallen on the ground, and gently draped it back over Su Mu.

When Fu Shinian held Su Mu tightly again, coat and all, Qiao Yu shrugged off his own jacket and placed it over Fu Shinian’s shoulders. Fu Shinian glanced at him and had just opened his mouth to say it wasn’t necessary, but Qiao Yu spoke first, his voice quiet:

"Don’t collapse."

Fu Shinian said no more.

It’s unclear how much time had passed. By the time Fu Shinian felt his legs had gone numb from the cold, Su Mu finally calmed somewhat, her crying softening gradually. By then, Qiao Yu and Ji Nanfeng were already waiting outside. She didn’t lift her head, only reached out with her arms and hugged Fu Shinian around the waist.

Fu Shinian froze for a moment. After all, it had been a long time since Su Mu had shown any sign of closeness to him. He smiled faintly, lightly patting her shoulder:

"What’s wrong?"

"I’m sorry..."

Fu Shinian didn’t respond.

"I know you’ve been under so much pressure lately—searching for Qiqi, hiding the truth and taking care of Grandma, dealing with my emotions. I’ve always known you’re trying so hard, but I couldn’t stop blaming you. I should’ve stood by your side through all of this, shared the burden with you. But I withdrew into my shell instead, protecting myself, leaving you to face everything alone... I’m sorry."

Gently patting Su Mu’s back, Fu Shinian smiled softly:

"I don’t think anything of it. I just feel sorry for you. What’s happened with Qiqi is something none of us wanted. I understand how you feel. I don’t blame you—I just hope you can be stronger. I’ll go to any lengths to find Qiqi, but I don’t want to see you give up on yourself like this. When Qiqi comes back, she’ll blame me for not taking better care of you."

Su Mu didn’t respond, nor did she appear to hear Fu Shinian’s words. She kept murmuring to herself:

"I’m sorry... I don’t want to act like this, either..."

"I know, I know," Fu Shinian reassured softly. "I’m not blaming you. If there’s anyone to blame, it’s myself—for failing to take care of you and Qiqi."

Su Mu shook her head:

"You’ve already done so well."

Fu Shinian gave a faint smile, accepting her words silently though he didn’t agree. If he had truly done well, then why wasn’t Qiqi with them now? But he didn’t say this. Instead, he hugged Su Mu gently:

"Susu, if you really feel sorry for me, let’s head back sooner. I can barely feel my legs."

When Su Mu and Fu Shinian reached the first floor, a gust of icy wind hit them, making Fu Shinian sneeze involuntarily. Su Mu, her eyes red from crying, glanced at him: "Are you going to catch a cold? I—"

"Don’t make this about you. What I’m more worried about is you catching a cold. Let’s head back quickly."

As they stepped out of the parking lot, they saw Qiao Yu and Ji Nanfeng seated in a car, chatting. When the two saw them emerge, they immediately pushed open the car doors, got out, and walked over without saying a word. Qiao Yu opened the door to Fu Shinian’s car: "I turned on the heat for you. Get inside quickly to warm up."

In the midst of their emotional turmoil, neither of them had felt the cold that sharply. But now that they had calmed down, both Su Mu and Fu Shinian could feel the biting chill hanging in the air. Without uttering a word, they climbed into the car. Wrapped in its warm interior, Su Mu couldn’t help but sneeze again.
