Chapter 613: The Worst Plan
Chapter 613: Chapter 613: The Worst Plan
After Wei Shaoqin hung up the call with Jiang Bei, he drove straight toward the hospital. During the drive, he thought he was staying fully focused on the road conditions, yet two intersections away from the hospital, he was chased down by the traffic police, who checked his documents and issued a ticket. It was only then that he realized he’d run through red lights all the way here.
It felt as though everything in his mind had vanished; he numbly cooperated, numbly listened, although he didn’t catch a single word the traffic police said. All he could hear was that one clear sentence from Jiang Bei’s call, carved right into his brain. She said:
"Qiqi is missing."
Qiqi is missing. Wei Shaoqin was worried, anxious, uneasy, but all those emotions converged into one thought: ’Qiqi is missing, how heartbroken must Su Mu be.’
Only now did Wei Shaoqin come to realize that his feelings for Su Mu ran far deeper than he’d ever thought. He also realized that his dislike for children hadn’t changed. His fondness and affection for Qiqi were merely because she was Su Mu’s daughter.
Su Mu treasured Qiqi more than life itself. So, he too treated Qiqi as his own life. Only this way could Su Mu feel joy and safety.
But now Qiqi was missing. Could Su Mu even continue to live?
When they arrived at the hospital, barely a word had been exchanged before the door of the operating room was pushed open. Everyone in the hallway stood up and walked toward the entrance. Qiao Yu removed his mask and addressed them:
"Wen Shaoyuan’s gunshot wound is on his shoulder, nothing too serious. He’s only unconscious due to excessive blood loss. The surgery was very successful; there shouldn’t be any major complications."
Fu Shinian looked at Qiao Yu:
"When will he wake up?"
"Approximately four hours," Qiao Yu replied.
Fu Shinian frowned slightly. Four hours—who knows how many opportunities would be delayed in that time? But at the moment, they had no other leads.
After Wen Shaoyuan was moved to a recovery room, Fu Shinian received a call from the traffic police department, saying that Yu Xin’s vehicle route had been tracked. Fu Shinian only wanted the results: "Where did it go?"
"West Suburb. After exiting the highway, there’s no traceable footage anymore."
Fu Shinian hung up the phone, contemplating for a few seconds before turning to Rong Shen:
"Where did your men find Wen Shaoyuan?"
Rong Shen named a location, then watched Fu Shinian’s pensive demeanor and said, "Based on the severity of their injuries, I estimate they didn’t walk far before collapsing after getting hurt. So when I had my people search, I instructed them to check nearby places where someone could hide. But so far, there’s been no news."
Fu Shinian remained silent for a moment, attempting to extract a clear thread from the disjointed information—but failed several times. On the surface, he maintained a calm and orderly appearance, but only he knew how turbulent his heart truly was.
He exhaled slowly and looked at Rong Shen:
"Thanks for all your help."
"No need to be polite with me," Rong Shen said, looking at him. "Finding Qiqi is the most important thing right now."
Fu Shinian nodded.
Ji Qingluan and Wen Shaoyuan were sent into surgery at almost the same time. Wen Shaoyuan had been out for nearly three hours now, yet there was still no word on Ji Qingluan’s situation. Su Mu refused to leave, afraid of missing any news about Qiqi. But sitting there for so long had visibly taken its toll on her. Fu Shinian forcefully took her to a private room on the top floor and pressed her into the bed:
"I know you can’t sleep, but at least close your eyes and rest for a bit. I’ve already mobilized every available resource and manpower. If there’s any news, I promise I won’t hide it from you; I’ll tell you immediately. There’s no point in wearing yourself down right now. When Qiqi is back, she’d only feel sad seeing you like this."
Su Mu looked at Fu Shinian with reddened eyes:
"Will Qiqi really come back?"
Fu Shinian crouched down in front of her, tightly holding her icy cold hand: "She will. Believe me. I’ll bring Qiqi back to you safe and sound."
"But Wen Shaoyuan came back, Ji Qingluan came back—they disappeared together and surely went through something. Yet Qiqi hasn’t returned," Su Mu said through choking sobs, barely able to get her words out. After a long pause, she finally added, "Is it that Qiqi can’t come back? Or... Qiqi won’t ever come back."
This question had actually already crossed Fu Shinian’s mind at the very beginning. He hadn’t said it aloud because he could prepare himself for the worst internally, but he couldn’t bear to tell Su Mu. He knew Su Mu couldn’t accept it, that she would completely break.
He couldn’t even begin to imagine what Su Mu would look like in that scenario.
"Susu..." Fu Shinian held Su Mu’s hand tightly. "We don’t have any news yet, and I don’t have a clear answer for you. I want to reassure you, but I don’t want to lie... Right now, we can only hope for the best. Qiqi is very clever, smarter than most kids. She knows how to protect herself. I truly believe she’s okay—just temporarily unable to come back."
Su Mu looked at Fu Shinian, giving a bitter, hopeless smile:
"Actually, you and I are the same; we’ve both already prepared for the worst, haven’t we?"
"I can’t help but prepare for that possibility. Qiqi is your everything. If something did happen to her, I’d need to hold you together." Fu Shinian knelt down, looking straight into Su Mu’s eyes without blinking. "Susu, I don’t expect you to stay strong. Facing something like this—you’re staying calm right now for my sake, I know that. But if something truly happens, and I mean if... Please don’t give up on me, okay?"
Su Mu simply stared at Fu Shinian as tears streamed silently down her face. She didn’t respond to his words, though deep down, she truly didn’t know how she would go on if life without Qiqi were to unfold.
When Su Mu’s silence dragged on, Fu Shinian grew increasingly uneasy. He was genuinely terrified that if anything happened to Qiqi, Su Mu would fall apart—and if she did, he might not be able to endure it either.
While Su Mu and Fu Shinian were caught in their sorrowful embrace, Wen Han had already called Ji Qingshan to inform him about Ji Qingluan’s situation. With matters as they were, he couldn’t keep this news from him anymore. Thus, he wasn’t surprised when Ji Qingshan arrived and immediately landed a punch square on his face. He could’ve dodged it, but chose to take the blow head-on.
"Wen Han, if anything happens to my sister because of this, I won’t let it slide."
"Alright," Wen Han replied, looking straight at Ji Qingshan.
When Ji Qingluan was pushed out of the operating room, the doctor wore a grim expression. Ji Qingshan felt a heavy pit in his stomach but forced himself to stay composed as he stepped forward to ask:
"Doctor, how is my sister’s condition?"
