Chapter 612: Chapter 612: I’m Very Scared

Something’s not right.

There wouldn’t be such a coincidence, nor could there be someone whom none of them had ever met, yet both Su Mu and Su Shiyue felt familiar with. The more Fu Shinian thought about it, the more he felt this matter had been premeditated from the beginning. If the woman named Yu Xin had deliberately inserted herself into their lives, then even without what had happened yesterday, even without all the assumptions they’d just listed out, Yu Xin would have done this.

If not today, then tomorrow.

So, who is she really?

Qiao Yu looked at Fu Shinian. "Did you think of something?"

Fu Shinian shook his head:

"I just don’t understand."

"Hasn’t the perpetrator behind the shooting three years ago remained undetected all this time? Could this woman be the one who wanted all of you dead back then?" Ji Nanfeng stared at Fu Shinian. "Do you truly have no recollection of her at all?"

Although both Su Mu and Su Shiyue felt Yu Xin familiar, Su Shiyue’s sense of familiarity was faint. He couldn’t point to where he might have seen her, yet everything now seemed to prove his feelings were wrong. This woman knew him, knew Su Mu, and knew Su Shiyue.

A nearly deranged idea formed in Fu Shinian’s mind, and his expression shifted. Ji Nanfeng immediately sensed it, but before he could say anything, Rong Shen walked in. He scanned the room’s occupants, pausing a few seconds on Jiang Bei, then said:

"Once I received the news, I sent people out immediately, focusing on the outskirts. Half an hour ago, they discovered a car on a road in the West Suburb. Wen Shaoyuan was inside it."

Wen Han almost leapt off the sofa immediately, took two steps forward, and stared intently at Rong Shen.

Nearly everyone else reflexively stood up. Rong Shen’s gaze hesitated briefly on both Su Mu and Fu Shinian before addressing Wen Han: "There was also a woman inside the car. Both were shot. They’ve been taken to the hospital."

Since Qiqi had disappeared along with Wen Shaoyuan, now that Wen Shaoyuan was back, there must be news of Qiqi too. With Rong Shen’s announcement, the group rushed to the hospital without hesitation.

The patients were in Qiao Yu’s hospital. After Qiao Yu returned, he inquired at the reception desk before heading straight to the operating room. The group arrived shortly after, but all they could do was wait at the operating room door. Fu Shinian helped Su Mu to sit on a bench in the hallway. He stood up after a moment, intending to make a call, but Su Mu grabbed his hand.

Her fingers were icy, as if the warmth couldn’t reach them no matter what.

Fu Shinian looked at Su Mu and knelt down in front of her, her hand enfolded in his palm. He gazed at her: "Since Shaoyuan is back, there’s bound to be news about Qiqi soon. I understand you’re worried, it’s hard to bear, but Susu, until we hear about Qiqi, we must stay strong. We can’t collapse."

Su Mu stared at Fu Shinian, silent and a little dazed.

"I know it’s hard for you in this situation, but I’ll stay with you. We’ll bring Qiqi back. Believe me."

Su Mu slowly shifted her gaze down to their intertwined hands:

"I’m really scared."

"I know."

"Wen Shaoyuan came back injured. What about Qiqi, who didn’t return? I don’t dare imagine it."

Seeing the current circumstances, Fu Shinian didn’t dare promise Su Mu anything firmly. He had already considered the worst outcome—if Qiqi could be saved, she would have returned with Wen Shaoyuan, not like this. Two people who disappeared together, but only one had come back.

Yet he couldn’t say this to Su Mu, not now at least.

He knew she had thought about this too but didn’t dare voice it. Both of them tried their best to protect each other’s emotions with reason, because they both understood that once they let go, despair could consume them entirely.

Fu Shinian quietly kept Su Mu company for a while until she started to calm down a bit. He then called Jiang Bei over to stay with Su Mu while he joined Ji Nanfeng and Rong Shen.

Despite their usual animosity—every encounter between them ending in fights—they unexpectedly displayed a rare harmony due to Qiqi’s circumstances. In fact, as long as Jiang Bei wasn’t mentioned, their relationship could be considered passable.

Fu Shinian approached them, running his fingers through his pocket irritably. Ji Nanfeng noticed the fidgeting gesture and offered him a pack of cigarettes. Fu Shinian glanced at him and accepted.

He had quit smoking a long time ago. From the initial agony to later indifference, it hadn’t taken much time for him to adapt. Once it was over, it was over. But now he had an urge—a craving that wouldn’t feel right unless fed. He didn’t suppress it, lighting up and exhaling clouds of smoke before finally speaking:

"What were you talking about?"

"I just asked the nurse," Ji Nanfeng said, looking at Fu Shinian. "The woman who was brought in with Wen Shaoyuan is Ji Qingluan."

Fu Shinian frowned slightly:

"Why is she involved in this now too?"

"It’s unclear. But both are shot, and Qiqi..." Ji Nanfeng trailed off, his gaze lingering on Fu Shinian without finishing the sentence.

After several seconds of silence, Fu Shinian nodded slightly:

"I understand."

Though Qiqi had only been by his side for less than half a year, she was his flesh and blood, a bond that came with an instinctive love and care. Since she had come back to him, Fu Shinian poured all his affection into the child, cherishing her. He had thought about her future—how she’d marry one day, how another man would take the role closest to her. But he had never imagined losing her before any of that.

There were thoughts he desperately avoided, but avoiding didn’t make them disappear. Now, even the faintest touch upon them sent tremors to his fingertips.

While such a calamity unfolded, nobody had remembered to inform Wei Shaoqin. He learned about it while socializing at a banquet when he overheard someone mentioning:

"Did you hear? Something seems to have happened with the Fu family."

"What happened?"

"A friend in the traffic police said Fu Shinian and Ji Nanfeng were frantic today at the station, reviewing surveillance footage along the roads. They mentioned a missing child."

These words made Wei Shaoqin’s mind buzz. Whatever else they said after that, Wei Shaoqin neither heard nor registered. Instinctively, he rose and left without a word, heading outside to find his car. It wasn’t until he stepped out of the hotel that he realized how cold it was, and he hadn’t even grabbed his jacket.

He didn’t call Su Mu; instead, he called Jiang Bei—not because he wasn’t mindful of Jiang Bei’s pregnancy—but because he knew Jiang Bei had been staying at Gui Ning Residence lately. If the Fu family truly faced trouble, Jiang Bei wouldn’t be able to avoid it.
