Chapter 57: Chapter 57: Only I Can Touch You

When Su Mu awoke, her head throbbed as if it were about to explode at any moment. She struggled to her feet from the bed and then realized that every part of her body seemed to have been torn apart and reassembled. Memories gradually returned, and she thought of the last moments she had spent with Su Shiyue, which were her final recollections. Yet, what happened afterwards she did not know.

The marks and sensations on her body were telling Su Mu that she had been with a man in this room.

Her first thought was of Fu Shinian. She wondered if he knew she had gone missing or rather if he already knew what had happened to her. Su Shiyue had gone to great lengths to betray her, wasn’t her goal to drive a wedge between herself and Fu Shinian?

Now that she had succeeded, according to her usual way of doing things, Fu Shinian should have been informed about last night’s events almost immediately.

So, what would he do?

Su Mu had no time to guess, nor did she want to think about this headache-inducing problem, but it wasn’t something she could run from. She couldn’t hope that Fu Shinian hadn’t yet learned what had happened, nor had she ever considered concealing the truth.

She knew where his bottom line was, to err was to err.

After finding her phone in the handbag on the bedside table, Su Mu didn’t hesitate for a second before dialing Fu Shinian’s number. The call connected, but no one answered. Su Mu kept praying ’pick up, pick up,’ because she didn’t know if the courage she had to speak to Fu Shinian would disappear in the next second.

How could she begin to tell him that she had betrayed his trust? Although it had been against her will, what was done was done. He didn’t have any superfluous feelings for her, and it seemed like divorce was the only path left, but she didn’t want it. She didn’t want to leave Fu Shinian, didn’t want to give up on her marriage.

But what Fu Shinian hated most was a woman unfaithful to marriage, wasn’t it? His mother had been like that, and now, why on earth should he accept her like this? She had no right at all.

As the phone went unanswered, Su Mu felt her courage gradually ebbing from her. She hung up and tried to call again when the room door was opened. Almost reflexively, she turned towards the door, but upon seeing who it was, she felt as though she had entered a dreamlike space.

Fu Shinian waved the mobile in his hand and stepped in:

"Did you call me?"

Su Mu was stunned, unsure how to react.

Some things she could say over the phone because that way she wouldn’t have to face Fu Shinian’s disappointed and disgusted gaze. But now that he was standing before her, all Su Mu could think of was to hide the incident as much as possible.

She didn’t want her husband to see her in such a shameful state.

As Fu Shinian stood by the bed, Su Mu instinctively shrank back. This action made Fu Shinian momentarily perplexed, he narrowed his eyes slightly:

"Isn’t it a little late to hide now?"

Su Mu looked up at him, "Do... do you know everything?"

Fu Shinian let out a soft scoff:

"Shouldn’t I know?"

"No, it’s not that, of course, you have the right to know. I never thought to hide it from you."

Fu Shinian raised an eyebrow slightly and realized that there seemed to be a disconnect between the two, but he did not intend to correct the awkward scene. He asked:

"Is that so? Do you want to tell me exactly what happened, from beginning to end?"

Not daring to look at the expression on Fu Shinian’s face, Su Mu replied with her head lowered, "Don’t you already know?"

"I want to hear it from you."

Su Mu was silent for a while, but eventually, she told Fu Shinian the whole story. She concealed nothing, nor was there any need to hide. Standing there with scarcely a thread upon her, what was there he couldn’t understand?

She thought she would cry, but as she spoke to the end, Su Mu just felt a sourness in her nose, without shedding a single tear.

It turned out that once a person enters an irreparable sorrow, they can be without tears.

Fu Shinian watched her silently, without any reaction, because he really didn’t know whether to praise her for her uncompromising honesty or to scold her for her belated foolishness. Yet, as he saw her hugging herself tightly, curling up into a ball, he also felt a twinge of pity.

After all, he simply couldn’t comprehend how all this was a fatal blow to Su Mu.

"So, what do you plan to do?"

Su Mu was extremely quiet, the kind of quietness that comes from losing the support of the soul. She didn’t look up, but responded faintly, "No matter why something like this happened to me, in the end, I have wronged you, so I respect your decision. I can accept whatever outcome."

Fu Shinian raised his eyebrows slightly:

"Are you sure?"

Su Mu nodded.

Fu Shinian watched her with a smile at the corner of his mouth, "Since that’s the case, from now on, you should properly fulfill your duties as a wife."

Su Mu was stunned, and her resolution to accept the outcome somehow froze in place. She raised her head to look at Fu Shinian, finding his words from moments ago distant, so distant that she couldn’t understand what he meant.

Fu Shinian looked at her:

"What? Unwilling?"

"I don’t understand... what did you mean just now?"

Fu Shinian got up and sat down on the couch nearby, settling in with comfort,

"It probably means that from now on, I will no longer restrain my own desires."

Su Mu understood completely, but... why?

"Aren’t you supposed to divorce me?"

Hearing the word "divorce," Fu Shinian frowned subconsciously, and picked up a magazine from the coffee table in front of him, flipping through it casually, "I don’t have that plan for the time being."

Su Mu felt as if she were sinking into a fog with no sense of direction. It seemed she had misunderstood something, or perhaps she had subconsciously overlooked something. She watched Fu Shinian blankly, and then she saw an ambiguous red mark on his neck. Suddenly, a bold idea popped into her mind.

She looked at Fu Shinian:

"The person last night... was it you?"

Fu Shinian scoffed lightly, not denying it, and lazily lifted his gaze from the magazine pages to look at her:

"Who else were you expecting? Wei Shaoqin?"

The surprise came too quickly, overwhelming Su Mu completely. In the extreme despair just now, she hadn’t cried, but upon learning that it was Fu Shinian, she could no longer hold back her tears, which fell from her face like pearls slipping off a string. Fu Shinian watched her quietly, offering neither comfort nor getting up. Only after Su Mu had calmed down slightly did he slowly speak:

"Su Mu, in this lifetime, only I can touch you!"
