Chapter 52: Chapter 52: Impossible to Guard Against
Su Mu returned home at exactly half past nine; the study still had lights on. After taking a shower and still not seeing Fu Shinian emerge, she went downstairs, heated a cup of milk, and brought it to the study.
She knocked on the door symbolically, pushed it open, and Fu Shinian was sitting behind the desk, working on the computer. He must have taken a shower already, his hair not as tidy as it was during the day, and his demeanor seemed more approachable than usual.
"Still busy?" Su Mu walked over and placed the milk beside him.
It was only then that Fu Shinian lazily looked up at her and chuckled lightly,
"Even when I’m busy, I’m at home, unlike Mrs. Fu who only gets home after half past nine."
"Shinian, that’s my job."
"So, please don’t interrupt my work right now." After saying that, he looked back at the computer, his voice chillingly cold, "Get out!"
For several consecutive days, Su Mu had arrived home at nine thirty, and Fu Shinian’s attitude remained consistently cold, even progressively getting worse. Su Mu tried hard to find a balance but to no avail; she couldn’t even fulfill the most basic marital duties.
It was Saturday, and Auntie Li had told Su Mu yesterday that Mrs. Wen would be at home today, planning to take Wen Shaoyuan out for fun. Therefore, she didn’t need to tutor at the Wen Family’s place today. Having a rare day of leisure, she discussed with Auntie Lin about cooking dinner for Fu Shinian herself that evening.
The phone rang at this moment, Auntie Lin answered it, then looked at Su Mu:
"Madam, it’s for you."
"Me?" Su Mu walked over with confusion and answered, "Hello, this is Su Mu."
"This is Su Shiyue."
Su Mu paused for a few seconds, "Is there something you need?"
"I’ll be leaving the country tomorrow, and I have some things I want to tell you before I go. Can we meet?"
"I wish you a safe journey in advance, but I think there’s nothing much for us to talk about."
Su Shiyue gave a light laugh, as if expecting her response, "Don’t you want to know about my brother and Qin Nianwan?"
"Do you want the truth?" Su Mu smiled faintly, "I’m genuinely not interested."
After speaking, she hung up the phone.
She wasn’t a fool; Su Shiyue had never been on good terms with her, and suddenly asking to meet was clearly a trap. However, what Su Shiyue probably didn’t expect was that Su Mu was not interested in Fu Shinian’s past with Qin Nianwan.
Su Mu didn’t want to know not because she wasn’t curious, but because these things should not be learned from others.
At the same time, Fu Shinian had just finished a meeting and returned to the office when he suddenly asked,
"What’s the date today?"
Song Yi, "October 13th."
Fu Shinian gave a light response, "Shiyue has a flight tomorrow, right?"
"Yes, at 12:28 p.m. tomorrow."
Originally, Su Shiyue wasn’t supposed to stay in Shen City this long after her birthday. But because she had mysteriously lost her ID and passport, she had no choice but to change her plans. However, to Fu Shinian, this "mystery" seemed too childish.
"Miss Fu will fly to London tomorrow, can those people following my wife be withdrawn now?"
Fu Shinian’s hand signing the documents paused slightly, and after a few seconds of silence, he slowly smiled,
"She has been quiet for so many days; if she doesn’t do something before she leaves, do you think she would have gone to the trouble of destroying her ID and passport?"
Song Yi instantly understood:
"I will notify them to pay extra attention."
Fu Shinian simply responded and said nothing more.
In the afternoon, Su Mu received a call from the old lady, saying that they had found her phone and asked when she would come to get it. Su Mu thought that since she had nothing else to do today, she might as well go directly. She had not expected that there was still a possibility of finding her phone after it had been lost for nearly half a month.
When she arrived at the old house by taxi, Su Shiyue was also there. Su Mu remembered the call from noon and suddenly felt a sense of indefensible apprehension. However, in front of the old lady, she didn’t feel it was appropriate to show her feelings. After chatting with the old lady for a while, they somehow ended up talking about the previous unpleasantness between Fu Shinian and Su Mu.
After leaving the old house, although the old lady had called twice, she was still uneasy. Now that Su Mu was in front of her, she felt compelled to make things clear:
"Susu, are you and Shinian still okay?"
Su Mu smiled and nodded: "Grandma, we are very good. You don’t have to worry about us."
"But I owe you an explanation for the incident last time."
Su Mu was puzzled, but then she realized that the old lady’s explanation must be regarding Qin Nianwan’s appearance that day. She shook her head slightly:
"Grandma, actually, you don’t need to explain anything to me. Maybe our relationship didn’t start because of feelings, but two years have passed, and I understand him. I know where his bottom line is. He would not stoop to do such things. As for bringing her back, apart from the emotional attachment, I think there must be other important reasons, right?"
The old lady looked at Su Mu approvingly:
"I knew I wasn’t wrong about you. I always knew you were a sensible child. With you by Shinian’s side, even if I pass away, I can rest easy."
Su Mu frowned: "Grandma, you will surely live a long life."
The old lady insisted that Su Mu stay for dinner. Usually, Su Mu would not refuse such an invitation, but this time she hesitated somewhat awkwardly:
"Grandma, I won’t join you for dinner tonight. Today, I would like to cook a few dishes for Shinian."
Seeing her embarrassed look, the old lady felt full of joy and waved her off, telling her to leave. After all, it was her greatest wish to see Su Mu and Shinian getting along well with each other.
It was then that Su Shiyue, who had been quiet this whole time, stood up:
"Sister-in-law, did you come by taxi? It’s hard to get a cab around the old house. Let me drive you back?"
Su Mu looked at her, intending to refuse, but the old lady spoke up at that moment: "Alright, you can take your sister-in-law, and come back whenever you’re free."
With that said, Su Mu felt it wouldn’t be polite to refuse any longer, so she agreed.
Once in the car and out of the old lady’s sight, Su Mu, who was sitting in the passenger seat, spoke faintly:
"Just drop me off ahead."
Su Shiyue let out a light laugh: "What’s the matter? Do you think I’d do something to harm you?"
"Haven’t you always been doing just that?"
"Then why don’t you guess what I’m planning to do to you now."
Su Mu didn’t reply, but she couldn’t help feeling tense, quietly gripping her phone. Su Shiyue noticed this and glanced at her faintly:
"No need to be sneaky. If you want to call my brother, you can do it right now."
Su Mu glanced at her phone and saw that there was no signal. The scenery outside was signaling to Su Mu that they were already close to the city area, where such a situation should not occur. Therefore, there was only one possibility.
Su Shiyue had installed a signal blocker in the car.
