Chapter 51: Adults Are Better at Lying
Chapter 51: Chapter 51: Adults Are Better at Lying
Wen Shaoyuan had no idea Su Mu was coming to pick him up today, so he sat quietly in his seat as usual, waiting for the family driver to take him home when suddenly a familiar smiling face appeared at the door.
Thinking he was dreaming, Wen Shaoyuan didn’t react until Su Mu showed her pick-up card to the teacher:
"I’m here to pick up Wen Shaoyuan."
"You must be Shaoyuan’s tutor, right? Mr. Wen called us today."
"Yes, unless there is an accident, I will be the one to pick him up."
The teacher smiled, returned the pick-up card to Su Mu, and called Wen Shaoyuan over. It wasn’t until this moment that Wen Shaoyuan realized what was happening and ran over to hug Su Mu’s legs, looking up with a huge smile, and excitedly said:
"Sister Su, are you here to pick me up from school?"
"Yes, I am."
"Then, is your foot injury better? Don’t push yourself for my sake, okay?"
Su Mu felt warmth in her heart from the little guy’s concern. She squatted down to be at eye level with Wen Shaoyuan and gently stroked his hair, "Sister Su’s foot is all better now, Shaoyuan doesn’t need to worry. From today on, I’ll pick you up from school, have meals with you, and tuck you into bed."
The teacher watched the two of them and couldn’t help but smile:
"It seems that Shaoyuan really likes you. He usually doesn’t like others touching his hair."
Upon hearing this, Su Mu immediately withdrew her hand and apologized:
"Sorry, Sister Su didn’t know your preference. I’ll be sure to remember next time."
Wen Shaoyuan shook his head, smiled, waved goodbye to the teacher, and refused when Su Mu tried to take his backpack:
"Sister Su, I can do it myself. We should handle our own affairs, and moreover, you are a girl, I am a boy; how can I let you do such physical work?"
Su Mu couldn’t help but laugh: "But I’m an adult."
"Whether a grown woman or a young girl, women should be protected by men. Although I’m still young, I have a heart that wants to protect you," Wen Shaoyuan said earnestly, blinking his large innocent eyes at her. "Can you feel it, Sister Su?"
Su Mu smiled and nodded, "Thank you, Shaoyuan."
Wen Shaoyuan carefully glanced behind him, making sure he was far enough from the teacher so that she wouldn’t overhear, and then whispered:
"Sister Su, I’ll tell you a secret."
Su Mu leaned in lending her ear, and Wen Shaoyuan said:
"Actually, I don’t mind you touching my hair at all. I didn’t tell you just now because I was afraid the teacher would get jealous. She’s a girl, too; I can’t hurt her feelings."
Su Mu, who had never interacted with children before, found Wen Shaoyuan, the first child she had encountered, far more adorable than she had ever imagined. She couldn’t fathom how such a tiny body could hold so many cute cells or how his little head could contain so many quirky ideas.
But undeniably, Su Mu liked him to bits!
It wasn’t until she returned to the Military Region Compound with Wen Shaoyuan that Su Mu realized how lonely he usually was. In such a big house, besides two maids, a chef, and a driver, there was only Wen Shaoyuan.
Su Mu couldn’t help but feel sympathy for the child beside her. Growing up in such an environment and still having such an endearing personality, she wondered whether it was innate or a product of his family circumstances.
If it was the former, it was his destiny. If it was the latter, it was his luck.
But Su Mu also saw what kind of family background Shaoyuan lived in. When she saw his grandmother in the hospital before, she thought she looked familiar, but could not remember where she had seen her. Now, seeing the family portrait in the living room, she felt that astonishment wasn’t enough to express the shock in her heart.
The person who often appeared on TV shows was actually a close relative of this little friend beside her.
Wen Han must have given a heads up because Auntie Li, the butler, introduced herself to Su Mu as soon as she entered the door:
"Hello, Teacher Su, I am the butler of the Wen Family. Should you need anything in the future, please feel free to tell me. Please take good care of the young master."
After Su Mu thanked her, Shaoyuan led her to his room on the second floor.
It was a room completely devoid of any childhood fun, except for a set of Avengers Alliance figurines on his bedside desk; there was nothing in the room that related to children. Su Mu couldn’t help but stroke his head:
"Don’t you play with toys usually?"
Shaoyuan shook his head slightly: "Playing alone isn’t much fun. I prefer reading."
He then took off his backpack, placed it on the small desk, and looked up at Su Mu: "Sister Su, we can start the lesson now!"
After starting to tutor Shaoyuan, Su Mu noticed a problem. Perhaps from the beginning, Wen Han wasn’t actually looking for a tutor because Shaoyuan was so intelligent that she barely had to teach him anything. He was at the age of a kindergartener, yet he could do second-grade elementary school problems flawlessly.
What Wen Han wanted to find was someone who could give Shaoyuan company and make him feel at ease.
During dinner, Auntie Li said that she hadn’t seen the young master so happy and eating with such relish in a long time. When Su Mu felt that her presence had value, she couldn’t help but think of Fu Shinian. With that previous phone call, his displeasure was so evident. She wondered if he had calmed down by now, whether he had returned home, and if he had eaten or not?
Shaoyuan noticed her distraction and asked:
"Sister Su, are you worried about something?"
Snapping back to reality, Su Mu smiled slightly:
"No."
"You adults often teach us children not to lie, but I think children only lie because they learn it from adults. Compared to children, adults are actually better at lying."
After hearing what Shaoyuan said, Su Mu couldn’t help but feel guilty. She felt her inner self was completely exposed in front of this child and felt ashamed:
"Sorry, I do have something on my mind. The reason I didn’t want to talk about it is that I thought it wasn’t something a child should worry about, and I didn’t want to disturb your studies."
Shaoyuan smiled slightly:
"I accept your apology."
After dinner, Su Mu watched TV with Shaoyuan in the living room for a while, but he showed no interest in the cartoons that most children liked, focusing instead on military-related programming and the news broadcast, which impressed Su Mu.
But then she thought that maybe he didn’t understand it; he was just trying to find traces of his family in it.
After the news was over, Su Mu helped Shaoyuan with his homework for a while. Later, Auntie Li came up to take Shaoyuan for his bath, and Su Mu helped tidy his bedroom a bit. Only when she was spreading the bed did she find a photo frame under his pillow, identical to the family portrait on the living room wall.
Perhaps the child before her was not as optimistic and strong as she had imagined.
