Chapter 487: Chapter 487: Paralyze Oneself, Not Returning Until Drunk
When Su Mu returned to the car, her eyes were red. Qiqi saw it but did not ask, only looking towards Jiang Bei with a cautious gaze. Jiang Bei gave her a reassuring smile and spoke:
"What did you talk about?"
Su Mu shook her head:
"Nothing much, just talked about breaking up."
"You..." Jiang Bei was somewhat worried: "Are you okay?"
"I’m fine." Su Mu started the engine: "Just didn’t expect to drag you into this. Because of me, you had an unpleasant time with your aunt. You really didn’t need to say those things for me; I could have managed."
"I know you too well. Indeed, this matter wouldn’t be too hard for you, but you would consider social niceties, Wen Han’s feelings, my aunt’s health, so in the end, you would only feel wronged. But Su Mu, you weren’t in the wrong in this matter, you shouldn’t have to make yourself feel like this. Even though I am my aunt’s niece, I am also your only best friend. My aunt can be comforted by Wen Han and accompanied by Shaoyuan, but what about you?"
Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu:
"You only have me."
Qiqi spoke softly:
"Mu has me too."
Both Jiang Bei and Su Mu smiled:
"Right, we forgot. Our Su Mu also has our little princess Qiqi."
No matter if the wedding is still going on tomorrow, Jiang Bei couldn’t possibly leave Su Mu tonight. Even though Su Mu acted as if nothing was wrong, Jiang Bei was still worried, and followed Su Mu back to her new place.
Qiqi was still a child. Even if she sensed that many unforeseen things happened today, her thoughts remained pure, so by the time they got home, she had already fallen asleep in the car. Su Mu held Qiqi in her arms, kissed the forehead of what seemed like her whole world.
Back in the apartment, Su Mu took care of Qiqi till she fell asleep. When she came out, Jiang Bei had already taken a shower, changed into Su Mu’s pajamas, and was lying in bed. Su Mu smiled faintly at the sight:
"It’s almost midnight, you should rest early, don’t worry about me."
"If I wasn’t worried about you, I wouldn’t have come today."
"You’re different now. Even if you don’t rest, the baby inside you needs to."
Jiang Bei smiled slightly:
"They’re not that fragile. You go take a shower, and we can talk properly when you come back."
Su Mu didn’t agree or refuse, just took a set of pajamas and went into the bathroom, purposely dawdling there for a long time. By the time she came out, Jiang Bei had already closed her eyes in bed, still holding an iPad with a horror movie playing — probably to stay awake for Su Mu, but she still couldn’t resist sleep.
Su Mu smiled, walked over, and covered Jiang Bei with a blanket. There was a moment of lucidity as Jiang Bei opened her eyes to see Su Mu, tried to get up but was pressed down by Su Mu:
"Go to sleep. We can talk tomorrow."
Jiang Bei was truly too tired. Shortly after Su Mu spoke, she closed her eyes and soon steady breathing could be heard. Su Mu quietly sat by the bed for a while, then laid down. She intended to cultivate a sense of sleepiness, but after tossing and turning for nearly an hour, she was still wide awake.
She got up and went to the balcony, wanting to smoke but discovered there were none left at home. She truly missed the taste of nicotine, the only flavor that could temporarily numb her, so she changed clothes, took her keys, and went downstairs to buy some.
At one o’clock in the morning, there was nobody in the neighborhood, and the streets were deserted. Standing at the entrance of a 24-hour convenience store after buying a pack of cigarettes, Su Mu inadvertently saw Fu Shinian waiting there. His posture suggested he had been waiting for a long time. He smiled faintly at Su Mu and greeted:
"Good evening."
Su Mu’s gaze swept past him nonchalantly, putting away the cigarettes, and turned to walk back towards the neighborhood. Fu Shinian showed no signs of anger, following behind her, talking non-stop regardless of whether Su Mu wanted to listen:
"Aren’t you getting engaged tomorrow? Why aren’t you resting at this late hour, aren’t you afraid you won’t be in good shape?"
Su Mu responded with silence, which didn’t stop Fu Shinian. He quickened his pace and walked beside Su Mu:
"Staying up so late must mean something important has happened, right? I’m already here, don’t you want to talk? Maybe I could offer some advice."
Continuing to be ignored by Su Mu, Fu Shinian didn’t feel the awkwardness. He rambled on until they reached the apartment building, when he finally ran out of patience and grabbed Su Mu’s wrist, saying:
"Qiqi sent me a message asking me to come over."
Su Mu finally looked Fu Shinian in the eye:
"No matter what the reason, I don’t want to see you now, and I don’t want to speak a word to you. If you respect me, please leave. Maybe when I feel like talking, I’ll think of you first."
"You don’t speak, I won’t force you, but look at the time — you’re not the slightest bit sleepy. Even if I let you go now, you wouldn’t be able to sleep. Otherwise, why would you come down to buy cigarettes at this time?"
After a few seconds of silence, Su Mu broke free from Fu Shinian’s grip and walked straight to the flower bed opposite the apartment entrance and sat down. She casually tore open the pack of cigarettes she had just bought, lit one, and Fu Shinian watched from a short distance, for once not voicing any rejection, perhaps understanding to some extent what had happened tonight.
When the cigarette in Su Mu’s hand was half-smoked, Fu Shinian walked over and sat next to Su Mu. He took the cigarette from between Su Mu’s fingers into his own and took a few harsh drags before snuffing it out:
"I know you’re not in a good mood, but smoking can’t make you feel better. If you want to numb yourself, why not come with me? I’ll take you somewhere to make sure you forget these troubles?"
Su Mu smirked at Fu Shinian:
"You’re like a wolf. I should go with you? Am I mad?"
Fu Shinian smiled slightly:
"If I wanted to be mad, do you think I’d care where? Here is fine too, as you well know."
"I’m not in the mood to go out with you."
Instead of using words to persuade Su Mu, Fu Shinian decisively picked her up in his arms amidst her struggles, stuffed her into his car, slammed the door, and through the window said to Su Mu who was trying to get out:
"Today’s matter you don’t want to talk about, I won’t ask a word. I really just want you to relax. Trust me."
Whether it was indeed a dire need to be numbed or because Fu Shinian’s words were too sincere, Su Mu was somehow persuaded and sat in the passenger seat motionless, waiting until Fu Shinian walked around the car and got in on the other side.
As the car slowly left the neighborhood, Su Mu knew it was too late. She looked at the neon lights outside the window and asked:
"Where are we going?"
Fu Shinian smiled faintly:
"To drink. We won’t return until we’re drunk."
