Chapter 486: Chapter 486: Solving the Mystery, We Break Up
Su Mu watched Wen Han smile faintly:
"We both tried, but the facts have proved that we are indeed not suitable for each other."
Wen Han chuckled lightly, leaned back on the sofa, and said nothing more. Su Mu glanced at the staircase, not knowing whether Jiang Bei had intentionally left her and Wen Han alone. Jiang Bei had not come down yet, and Su Mu lightly withdrew her gaze, crouching down to pick up the photos on the floor and place them back on the coffee table.
She would not take these things away, nor was there anything to take. She just looked at Wen Han:
"When did you find out that your mother wasn’t sick?"
"I knew that day." Wen Han admitted quickly: "She knew about my feelings for you, so she thought of using this method to make you marry me, thinking that perhaps after our engagement or marriage, Fu Shinian would give up on you. After all, given his pride, he wouldn’t want a woman who has been involved with another man, right?"
Wen Han looked at Su Mu: "I was making a final attempt, but in the end, I still lost."
"So, you manipulated the situation from the beginning; you never intended to treat this engagement as a mere act. You were truly considering it."
"Yes, I never thought about ending it afterward. I thought that after the engagement, I would treat you well. I didn’t expect you to love me, but at least to have some feelings for me, to no longer have an ambiguous relationship with Fu Shinian, and even to accept marrying me."
Su Mu smiled:
"But before you proposed the engagement, you clearly already had intentions of breaking up."
"You said it yourself, it was just an intention. It wasn’t easy for me to make you my girlfriend, do you think I would let go easily? I would never admit I’ve lost until the very last moment, but now it seems to be out of my hands. Such a big incident has occurred; you’ve seen how I hid things from you, and the deception from my mom. What better reason could there be?" Wen Han looked at Su Mu: "It gives you a justifiable reason to break up, allowing you to leave me."
"Wen Han, if I wanted to break up, I wouldn’t need a reason. I’ve already been through a marriage once; I would never compromise myself."
Wen Han looked at Su Mu and said nothing. At this moment, Jiang Bei came downstairs holding Qiqi’s hand, with Wen Shaoyuan following behind with a very solemn expression, perhaps because he knew the seriousness of this incident—so serious that he wouldn’t be able to see Qiqi as frequently in the future.
Qiqi looked back at Wen Shaoyuan and then ran towards Su Mu without turning back, hugging her legs tightly. She didn’t say anything, but gave Su Mu tremendous strength. Wen Han watched this scene and smiled slightly, then asked Qiqi:
"Qiqi, did you start disliking me a long time ago? You just want your Su Mu to return to Fu Shinian, don’t you?"
Jiang Bei frowned slightly:
"Why are you bringing a child into adult matters? Wen Han, you are usually rational, but maybe today’s event has hit you too hard. I advise you to take advantage of the early hour now to notify tomorrow’s guests that they don’t need to attend the wedding, then get some good sleep and calm yourself down."
Wen Han laughed self-deprecatingly and said nothing, waving his hand to indicate for them to leave. It was indeed unnecessary for Su Mu to stay any longer. She prepared to leave, holding Qiqi’s hand, but just before leaving, she suddenly thought of a question she had long forgotten and never intended to ask in her lifetime. She paused in her steps.
Jiang Bei also stopped and looked at her:
"What’s wrong?"
Su Mu smiled faintly, handing Qiqi to Jiang Bei: "Take Qiqi to the car first, I have a question to ask Wen Han."
Jiang Bei didn’t ask why but nodded and walked away with Qiqi. At the moment the door closed, Wen Han asked Su Mu:
"What do you want to ask?"
"Three years ago, in the underground parking lot, did you know that Fu Shinian came to rescue me?"
Wen Han looked at Su Mu, not saying a word. Su Mu also remained silent, simply waiting quietly. It seemed she wasn’t insistent on getting an answer—if Wen Han didn’t speak, she could turn around and leave at any moment. But Wen Han stood up and approached Su Mu, the two now merely inches apart, he looked into her eyes:
"Is this a question you’ve been wanting to ask for a long time?"
"Yes."
"Why didn’t you ask?"
"I thought it wasn’t necessary; it’s all in the past. Whether Fu Shinian rescued me or not, it won’t change my current attitude towards him."
Wen Han slightly curled the corner of his mouth:
"So why ask now?"
"I just want to know how much more the person I trusted so much has been keeping from me."
There was a brief silence between them, and Su Mu became impatient, as she had mentioned, the answer to this question wasn’t very important to her. Just as she turned to leave, Wen Han spoke:
"Yes, I knew. From the first time I visited you at the hospital, I had my suspicions, but never told you. Later when I was transferred to the criminal police division, although I wasn’t in charge of the case, it involved you, so I still paid some attention. Thus, some evidence later confirmed my suspicions. You were in distress over Fu Shinian’s attitude towards you at that time, and I thought about telling you. But the day I confirmed it with Fu Shinian was when you learned why he married you. I thought that whatever I said then, you and Fu Shinian had already reached an endpoint, so I chose not to tell you."
Su Mu nodded:
"I understand, thank you for being so honest with me. It’s getting late, I should go."
Su Mu turned to leave, but just as she did, her wrist was seized by Wen Han from behind, and she was unexpectedly pulled into an embrace. Before she could react, Wen Han had already hugged her tightly and kissed her. This was their first kiss since they had been together, and also the last. Su Mu initially wanted to struggle, but then realized that Wen Han was simply covering her without further aggressive moves, so her attempts to push him away gradually slowed.
Couples usually embrace and kiss; however, between Su Mu and Wen Han, there had never been such intimacy, even when there was, it was only kissing on the forehead. Su Mu knew it was because she had never fully invested in this relationship, and despite her efforts, she couldn’t make it work.
She realized during her relationship with Wen Han that feelings can’t be forced.
Not knowing how much time had passed, Wen Han finally lifted his lips from hers. He didn’t let go of her but instead pressed his forehead against hers and gently smiled:
"This is my first time kissing you, and also the last, Su Mu... Let’s break up."
