Chapter 474: Persistence Needs No Reason
Chapter 474: Chapter 474: Persistence Needs No Reason
Su Mu didn’t show any surprise when Fu Shinian agreed to stay. It was as if he had anticipated that Su Mu would compromise for Qiqi’s sake. He nodded slightly towards Su Mu, as if to thank her, yet there was a sense of unfamiliarity to it. This gave Su Mu a disconcerting feeling, but she didn’t reveal it.
Although Qiqi had briefly woken up, she was still listless. When Su Mu asked if she wanted to eat, Qiqi shook her head and just asked for water. As Su Mu prepared to get out of bed, Fu Shinian stopped her again, saying, "I’ll do it."
Fu Shinian came back quickly, carefully helping Qiqi drink a few sips of water through a straw. Perhaps worried that Fu Shinian would leave, Qiqi insisted that he lay down quickly. Fu Shinian gave a small smile, placed the water glass on the nightstand, and lay down beside Qiqi.
Qiqi said, "Fu Shinian, you didn’t take the blanket. Are you still planning to run away later?"
Fu Shinian had no choice but to get up and fetch a blanket from the wardrobe for the sake of calming his daughter down. This time, Qiqi was reassured. She seemed more content than ever before, with her mother on the left and father on the right. She felt like she was the happiest child in the world.
Because it was such a rare occasion, she didn’t want to sleep, worried that these moments wouldn’t be there once she woke up. So, despite feeling unwell, she stubbornly kept her eyes open.
Both Su Mu and Fu Shinian noticed this, but it was Fu Shinian who asked,
"Why aren’t you sleeping?"
Qiqi shook her head, "I’m not sleepy."
"Your eyelids are fighting."
"No, they’re not."
Qiqi stubbornly persisted. Fu Shinian didn’t know what to do with her and didn’t say anything more. Su Mu looked at the time. It was nearing midnight and she said, "I’m going to turn off the lights."
"No," Qiqi protested. "I want to look at you both more."
After saying this, she began to stare continuously at the two people beside her. Su Mu understood Qiqi best, so she knew exactly what Qiqi was thinking at this moment. She wanted to give her a promise, but in the end, she didn’t speak it out loud. Later, seeing that Qiqi was really struggling to stay awake, Fu Shinian finally said softly,
"Qiqi, I promise that there will be many more days like this with both your parents at your side. You’re not well now, and you’re sick. Shall we go to sleep first?"
Fu Shinian’s words made Su Mu look up at him, and he looked back at her. Their gazes met but no words were exchanged until Qiqi spoke up, asking Su Mu,
"Su Mu, is what Fu Shinian said true?"
She could lie without batting an eyelid to Fu Shinian or anyone else, but she couldn’t bring herself to say something insincere while looking into Qiqi’s pure, untainted eyes. So she stayed silent, then saw the light in Qiqi’s eyes dim. Fu Shinian slightly furrowed his brows and said,
"Qiqi, don’t worry. Your Su Mu is only shy. Leave it to me. I will definitely fulfill this wish of yours."
Perhaps Qiqi really couldn’t hold on any longer. Under Fu Shinian’s gentle soothing, she fell asleep quickly. Before long, the sound of her steady breathing reached Su Mu’s ears, and her anxious heart finally settled down.
Fu Shinian turned off the light, plunging the room into darkness. Su Mu’s heart skipped a beat uncontrollably. Once she adjusted to the darkness, her heart gradually stabilized, and then she heard Fu Shinian’s voice:
"I believe you can see how much Qiqi longs to have both her parents by her side. Even so, are you still unwilling to come back?"
To be honest, Su Mu had already been confused before Fu Shinian asked this question. All her hard work over these years, all her efforts, were just to give Qiqi a good life. But in the end, what she provided didn’t seem to be what Qiqi truly wanted. At this age, Qiqi didn’t understand brands, nor did she know about material life. What she wanted was simple: a mother, a father, a healthy and happy home.
And these were things that Su Mu couldn’t exchange for with all her hard work in her job.
She didn’t love Wen Han, but she was willing to try for a relatively complete home for Qiqi. So why couldn’t she accept Fu Shinian? After all, he was Qiqi’s biological father, and Qiqi liked him very much. He was also seeking reconciliation with her in all sincerity. It seemed like a perfect ending, and there probably wasn’t any better. But Su Mu dared not accept it.
Su Mu did not answer, and Fu Shinian did not press further for a response. After a long silence, he reached over Qiqi and gently ruffled Su Mu’s hair, murmuring:
"Sleep now."
That night, Su Mu thought she wouldn’t fall asleep since this was the first time in three years that she was sharing a bed with Fu Shinian while fully conscious. Although Qiqi was between them, maybe it was because of Qiqi’s presence that she felt her persistence was quite senseless.
Later, as she drifted in and out of sleep, her rest was anything but peaceful. She seemed to feel Fu Shinian getting up now and then to check Qiqi’s temperature, without really sleeping well himself. But when she woke up the next day, Fu Shinian was already out of the room.
Qiqi was awake but had not gotten up and was playing with a cell phone. Su Mu looked closer and realized it was not her cell phone, and couldn’t help asking,
"Are you feeling better?"
Qiqi turned to look at Su Mu and nodded with a smile:
"Su Mu, I’m fine now. Don’t worry about me."
Su Mu smiled and was about to say something else when Qiqi put down the cell phone, turned to her, and embraced her, saying, "Su Mu, you have no idea how happy I was when I woke up this morning and saw that Fu Shinian was also sleeping beside me."
Su Mu’s heart skipped a beat at Qiqi’s words. She gently pushed Qiqi away from her, looking at her smiling face:
"Do you really like that?"
"Of course, I like it. With both mom and dad by my side, I could even laugh in my dreams."
Su Mu did not continue this topic. Her emotions were in turmoil, likely not to settle any time soon, so she changed the subject:
"What are you playing?"
"I’m looking at Fu Shinian’s cell phone." Qiqi picked up the phone again. "I was awake when Fu Shinian woke up too, but he thought I should rest more, so he didn’t let me get out of bed. I was bored, so he gave me his phone and went downstairs to make breakfast."
Su Mu lay with Qiqi for a while and noticed that Qiqi had unlocked Fu Shinian’s phone with her fingerprint. Considering Fu Shinian’s status, the data and information on his phone were very important. Qiqi was just a child, yet he let her play with it so freely. In the end, it was his doting and indulgence towards Qiqi.
After a brief lapse of attention, Su Mu got ready to get up. At that moment, Fu Shinian entered the room. Seeing Su Mu, he smiled warmly, a complete contrast to the man who seemed ready to force himself on her the previous night. He said,
"Now that you’re awake, come downstairs for breakfast."
