Chapter 472: Chapter 472: If Not Today, Then Tomorrow
Fu Shinian was resolute, determined to win back Su Mu tonight. She was too disobedient, not taking his words seriously, and was bound to face some sort of lesson. He did not show any mercy, but in the very end, he ultimately didn’t go through with the final step. His cell phone had been incessantly ringing in his pocket on the floor, distracting him from his mood.
Looking at Su Mu’s completely unresisting, lifeless posture, he got out of bed, picked up the phone to check the caller ID, and pressed the answer button:
"What’s up?"
"Brother," Fu Shiyue’s voice came through the phone, "Qiqi suddenly has a high fever, come back quickly."
Fu Shinian was startled, all his desire faded in an instant. He said, "I’m coming back now," hung up the phone, and immediately started to get dressed. Then he called Qiao Yu, directly saying,
"Go to Bishui Yuntian now. Qiqi has a fever. Go check on her."
As he said this, Fu Shinian noticed Su Mu’s expression. Finally, a trace of a crack seemed to appear on her indifferent face. After a prolonged silence, she finally spoke up,
"What’s wrong with Qiqi?"
Fu Shinian walked over and untied her hands:
"Shiyue said she’s got a high fever. Do you want to come and see her with me?"
Su Mu got up from the bed and went straight to the wardrobe room, telling Fu Shinian with her actions that she intended to go.
Fu Shinian waited for Su Mu in the living room. After replaying Su Mu’s explanation in his mind, she finally reappeared in front of him. Noticing his voice, she turned and said,
"Let’s go."
On the way, Su Mu was very quiet, and Fu Shinian didn’t say much as he drove. Only at a red light did he glance at Su Mu inadvertently and noticed how badly swollen her wrist was. He reached out instinctively to hold her hand, startling Su Mu, who had been resting with her eyes closed, causing her to instinctively pull back.
Fu Shinian looked at her without apologizing for his action. He didn’t think he was wrong, but simply asked,
"Does it hurt?"
Su Mu glanced at her wrist. Her skin was pale and prone to showing marks. At the hospital, Zhou Yaxian had also grabbed her tightly, but the marks had somewhat faded by the time they left. Yet as one set of bruises healed, new ones more harshly took their place. She withdrew her hand from Fu Shinian’s grasp, without saying a word.
Fu Shinian wasn’t annoyed either, focusing his gaze on the traffic lights ahead, then spoke:
"It would be today or tomorrow; you can’t escape. I will bind you to my side by force if necessary. Don’t mention the Wen Family, who presently lack power. Even when Wen Songyan was alive, I didn’t regard them much."
Su Mu was indifferent, as if she hadn’t heard his words, until the red light turned green and the car surged forward onto the road.
When they arrived at Bishui Yuntian, Qiao Yu was already there, having diagnosed Qiqi’s condition. It was a normal fever with no serious issues, but the temperature was too high, so she was given a fever-reducing injection and slept in a daze, not waking during that time. Su Mu walked over, crouched down beside Qiqi’s bed, and watched her unblinkingly. Her little face was red from the fever, and her brows were slightly furrowed, as if in discomfort.
Fu Shinian glanced at Su Mu and gave Qiao Yu a faint nod:
"Thanks for coming."
Qiao Yu laughed lightly: "You’re being so formal with me, and it makes me uneasy."
Fu Shinian smiled and didn’t say much. Qiao Yu came from the hospital and was on duty that evening; she needed to head back now, so she didn’t stay long. Fu Shinian escorted her to the door, and before getting into her car, Qiao Yu asked Fu Shinian:
"Did you bully Su Mu?"
Fu Shinian looked up at Qiao Yu, not speaking. He intended to smoke a cigarette, but when he reached into his pocket, he realized the lighter and cigarettes that had been there were gone—thrown away at Su Mu’s place. He just smiled faintly:
"I don’t understand what you’re talking about."
"Su Mu’s wrist was injured, and she doesn’t seem to be in a good mood. It might be because she’s worried about Qiqi, but her state doesn’t seem right, especially since she didn’t say a word to me just now."
"Maybe you’re just not very likable."
Qiao Yu chuckled, ignoring Fu Shinian’s sarcasm: "I can somewhat see your intentions. You plan to use forceful methods to make Su Mu come back to you. Have you thought about the consequences? If Su Mu becomes stubborn, it may not be good for anyone."
"Do you know that she’s about to get engaged to Wen Han?"
Qiao Yu had been in the hospital all day and hadn’t heard about the major developments of the evening. He was startled:
"Really? Does Su Mu really have feelings for Wen Han?"
Fu Shinian frowned slightly at Qiao Yu’s description, clearly disliking it. But after thinking about it, he realized such a phrasing was normal since it was Su Mu. If not for affection, she probably would not agree to an engagement. Fu Shinian did not explain further but said he could not just watch her marry another man in a wedding dress.
Qiao Yu found this statement somewhat amusing:
"Even for your sake, she has never worn one. Don’t forget how abnormal your previous marriage was."
Fu Shinian remained silent, still and silent.
"But whatever it is, there’s still a Qiqi between you and Su Mu. Perhaps Heaven has pity on you for giving you a chance. I also know that the common path will most likely not lead Su Mu back to you, given the many times you’ve hurt her. But even if you use extraordinary methods, you should still measure the extent—I bet those marks on her wrist came from your belt, right?"
Fu Shinian glanced at Qiao Yu:
"Aren’t you going back to the hospital? Go back."
Qiao Yu wanted to say more, but Fu Shinian had already turned back. So, Qiao Yu didn’t speak further; after all, his own life was a mess, standing here trying to play the role of a big brother often felt somewhat improper.
After Fu Shinian returned inside, the old lady and Fu Shiyue were both in the living room. Fu Shiyue had changed a lot since her return, and Fu Shinian was the only one who knew why, but he didn’t offer any comforting words. After all, she needed to solve it herself, though she seemed quite worried at the moment. Fu Shinian glanced at her:
"What’s wrong?"
"Brother, it’s my fault. I took Qiqi to the swimming pool in the back garden to teach her to swim this afternoon. Perhaps she got chilled."
Fu Shiyue thought Fu Shinian would be angry, but he only responded:
"It has nothing to do with you. At this time of the year, even swimming shouldn’t be an issue. Kids don’t have strong immune systems; they often feel unwell. Don’t take it to heart."
Fu Shiyue didn’t feel much comforted, but she didn’t say anything further. Meanwhile, the old lady looked at Fu Shinian with dissatisfaction and spoke:
"What happened to Susu’s wrist?"
