Chapter 470: Chapter 470: Weighing Pros and Cons, Unable to Refuse
Being able to accomplish so much in half an hour, Su Mu admired this quite a bit. She smiled slightly and said nothing.
Wen Han chatted with Zhou Yaxian for a long time while Su Mu sat on the sofa using her phone to look up information, silent until Zhou Yaxian went to sleep. Only then did Wen Han return to her side. Before he could speak, Su Mu stood up:
"I want to go back and take a shower tonight."
Wen Han nodded:
"I was planning on letting you go back anyway. You’ve been busy with us for two days; it’s time for you to get some rest."
Su Mu smiled, picked up her bag from the sofa, and walked towards the door. Wen Han followed her and stopped her in the hallway:
"Su Mu."
Su Mu turned around to look at Wen Han, her face devoid of any special expression: "What is it?"
"The engagement..."
Su Mu said nothing, just watched Wen Han.
"I know that getting engaged in our current situation is very unsuitable, and you have no such intentions, but given my mother’s condition, I’m afraid that not following her wishes will only worsen her illness. So, my idea is to go along with her desires for now. But rest assured, this is just an act; I won’t really ask you to do anything."
It seemed like the only solution. The doctor had also mentioned that Zhou Yaxian’s condition couldn’t withstand any more shocks. If, after announcing to everyone, she was told that there was, in fact, no engagement at all, the situation might spiral out of control, becoming even more unmanageable than it was now. As the person involved, Su Mu had the right to refuse, but nobody gave her the chance to do so.
After a few seconds of silence, she gave a faint nod:
"Okay."
Wen Han showed no surprise at Su Mu’s agreement. He seemed to have anticipated that Su Mu would not object, and he smiled slightly: "Thank you."
"It’s nothing, I’m leaving now."
Wen Han offered to accompany her downstairs, but Su Mu stopped him, saying that Zhou Yaxian’s condition required someone by her side, and it was better for him to stay in the ward. Hearing this, Wen Han didn’t insist further and watched as Su Mu entered the elevator before returning to the ward.
Su Mu had driven to the hospital, but now sitting in her car, she felt so exhausted she didn’t have the strength to move. She wanted to just sit there, thinking nothing, doing nothing. Her mind was so cluttered she couldn’t straighten out a single thought. Inexplicably, she had a premonition, but it was so unsubstantiated that it felt absurd even to herself.
She didn’t know how long she sat there, until her legs felt numb, before she finally snapped out of it and thought to start the engine. Just then, her phone rang. Su Mu glanced at the caller ID, sighed softly, and pressed the answer button:
"Qingluan."
"I heard that you and Wen Han are getting engaged?" Ji Qingluan’s voice betrayed neither joy nor anger: "Congratulations."
Zhou Yaxian’s illness hadn’t spread alarm to anyone, not even Jiang Bei knew about it. Yet, while no one knew of Zhou Yaxian’s condition, they somehow all found out about their engagement first, which left Su Mu disconcerted. It was as if her throat was blocked by a lump called the truth, but she couldn’t spit it out.
After a lengthy silence, Su Mu also just said one sentence:
"Thank you."
What else could she say besides those two words? Talk about Zhou Yaxian’s condition? But what was Zhou Yaxian’s status? Suicide was a scandal, and now she was in such poor mental health that Su Mu wasn’t even sure if Zhou Yaxian could endure the sight of visitors at the hospital.
After hanging up the phone, Su Mu drove home, tossed her high heels and bag aside, and went straight into the bathroom. She filled the bathtub full of water and submerged herself, holding her breath and refusing to surface for a long time. When she could no longer bear it and surfaced for air, the sight before her eyes almost made her fall back into the bathtub.
Unbeknownst to her, at some point, Fu Shinian had come to the apartment, silently opened the bathroom door, and was standing at the threshold, arms folded across his chest, looking at her with an indifferent face, turning Su Mu’s face pale from shock.
On any ordinary day, Fu Shinian would have been concerned, or at least asked her a couple of questions. But at that moment, he just stood there, expressionless, his face frosted over, as if he was prepared to devour her. Su Mu inexplicably felt fear. She had intended only to calm herself down, so there was nothing on the water’s surface, not even a bubble, to cover her exposed body. But Fu Shinian didn’t seem to be paying attention to her body at all; he stared at Su Mu’s face throughout, while it was Su Mu who found herself uncomfortable because of her compromised position.
"Why are you here?"
Fu Shinian huffed lightly and turned to leave, dropping a comment before he left: "Get dressed and come out, I have something to say to you."
Since their reunion, he had taken liberties with Su Mu too many times, almost every encounter seemed an attempt to take advantage of her. But now, seeing Su Mu like this, he had left without a second glance, which made Su Mu more nervous than ever, as she could anticipate how difficult the looming conversation would be.
As she exited the bathroom, Su Mu heard her phone ringing. Before she could step forward to answer it, Fu Shinian picked it up from the coffee table in the living room, glanced at the name, and a slight smile curled his lips. Before Su Mu could voice her protest, he pressed the answer button and put the phone to his ear, saying:
"Wen Han, do you not recognize your place?"
Su Mu was taken aback upon hearing the name that came from Fu Shinian’s mouth. Wen Han probably hadn’t expected that Fu Shinian would answer Su Mu’s phone, and he was silent for a long time. As for what was said afterward, Su Mu did not know, but she heard Fu Shinian say dismissively:
"Well, let’s wait and see. If you don’t mind your mother’s condition worsening, I’m also not opposed to giving you an engagement present."
With that, he hung up easily, tossed the phone aside, and then his gaze fell on Su Mu, as he extended his hand and commanded coldly:
"Come here."
Su Mu was no longer the weak woman he’d once manipulated years ago. The Su Mu of today was flesh and blood, had her own thoughts and resolutions. Though she indeed feared this version of Fu Shinian, to be summoned over with just a word from him was not something Su Mu was prepared to comply with.
Su Mu did not move, just looked at Fu Shinian. Fu Shinian, uncharacteristically, lost his patience and frowned slightly:
"Come here, or you won’t want to know what I’ll do if I have to fetch you myself."
This was both a threat and a warning. Su Mu understood it, and weighing her options, she still stepped forward. But instead of sitting beside him as Fu Shinian wanted, she chose a seat across from him. Fu Shinian didn’t seem annoyed, he merely sneered a thin smile, ignited a cigarette, and then threw the lighter and the cigarette pack in front of Su Mu:
"Today’s special, I’ll allow you one more smoke."
