Chapter 469: Chapter 469: Announcing the Wedding, Caught Off Guard
Su Mu hadn’t expected Wen Han to suddenly return, nor did she know how much he had heard, but she didn’t particularly care about that; what mattered most was stabilizing Zhou Yaxian’s emotions.
Seeing Wen Han, Zhou Yaxian immediately stretched out her hand to beckon him over. As Wen Han approached, Su Mu stepped back a few paces. Wen Han’s gaze unintentionally fell on Su Mu, and his brows furrowed subtly when he saw the red marks on her wrists. He opened his mouth as if to say something but was stopped by Su Mu’s look, and his words were choked back in his throat.
Wen Han took a seat beside Zhou Yaxian’s bed and smiled gently:
"Mom, how do you feel?"
"I’m fine." Zhou Yaxian didn’t seem sick at all, looking at Wen Han with a smile: "Did you hear the conversation between Su Su and me just now?"
Wen Han glanced at Su Mu, noticing her discomfiture, and smiled faintly:
"No, what were you talking about?"
Zhou Yaxian enthusiastically said:
"I was just talking about having Su Su and you prepare for the wedding. Su Su told me that you and she have been preparing to get engaged for a while and just hadn’t told me, wanting to give me a surprise. Is that so?"
Before Wen Han could answer, Zhou Yaxian continued:
"You two kids really know how to surprise me, being family already. But I can’t deny that I am really delighted. I’ve always worried that Su Su might refuse to marry you. I even thought about speaking to Su Su on your behalf, but I didn’t expect you two to have already planned it out, saving me all the worry."
Wen Han didn’t respond, just turned to glance at Su Mu after Zhou Yaxian had finished speaking. His gaze was so deep that Su Mu couldn’t decipher it, but regardless, she breathed a sigh of relief. After all, Wen Han had already spotted the clues and probably wouldn’t tell Zhou Yaxian the truth about the engagement being nonexistent.
Su Mu smiled faintly:
"I’m going to buy some things; you stay here with Auntie for a while."
Wen Han nodded: "Okay."
Su Mu didn’t have anything to buy. Although it was dinner time, she had no appetite because of Zhou Yaxian’s words. The air in the hospital room was stuffy, and she just wanted some fresh air, yet she couldn’t go too far, so she could only sit in the hospital’s small garden.
She spoke with Qiqi on the phone; although the little tyke sweetly expressed how much she missed her, she sounded very cheerful. Su Mu knew she must be having a blast under Fu Shinian’s care and truly wasn’t missing her, but Su Mu wasn’t disheartened. After instructing Qiqi for a bit, she thought to hang up, but Fu Shinian stopped her:
"Are you at the hospital?"
Su Mu paused, but knowing she couldn’t keep anything from him, she didn’t see any reason to deny it and admitted:
"Yes."
"Are you planning to stay longer?"
"I can’t leave."
Fu Shinian fell silent for a few seconds, as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, he simply said, "Su Mu, there isn’t much time left for you; think about it carefully."
It wasn’t until after she hung up that Su Mu realized what Fu Shinian meant by "time" — he had clearly told her during his time in Jiangcheng City that he would give her one month to deal with her relationship with Wen Han; otherwise, once the time was up, he wouldn’t hesitate to use extreme measures.
Calculating carefully, it had indeed been half a month since he had spoken those words — indeed, not much time left.
But until Fu Shinian reminded her, Su Mu hadn’t taken his threat seriously. But his second mention made her realize it wasn’t just talk, nor was it to scare her. His recent behavior was merely giving her space to resolve the matter.
But if she failed to handle it well, once the time was up, he would act without hesitation, and no one knew what methods he might use. However, Su Mu believed it definitely wouldn’t be what she wanted to see.
Wen Han sat down beside her, but Su Mu was still pondering Fu Shinian’s words. Upon sensing someone next to her, she instinctively looked over, and seeing Wen Han’s face, she tensed up — not because of the issues between Wen Han and Fu Shinian but because she was worried about Zhou Yaxian being left alone in the room. She got up to return to the ward, but Wen Han quickly grabbed her hand:
"Don’t worry, I’ve already got a nurse to accompany her, and there are people guarding the door; it’s okay."
Su Mu relaxed, yet she felt something was amiss. Looking at Wen Han, she asked:
"You knew?"
"With such a commotion, as her direct relative, the nurse had to tell me." Wen Han looked at Su Mu with eyes full of apology: "I’m sorry for putting you through so much; you should have called me."
Su Mu smiled wryly:
"In that sort of situation, it’s not just a matter of not having time to call you; even if I did, you probably couldn’t have made it back in time. It was a race against time, and you wouldn’t have been much help anyway."
Wen Han said nothing more; he just took Su Mu’s wrist and carefully touched the red marks:
"Does it hurt?"
Su Mu shook her head: "It doesn’t hurt."
"It seems like my mom has become a completely different person, I hardly recognize her anymore."
"The doctors must have also told you what the matter is, this kind of illness can’t be rushed; it has to be taken slowly."
Wen Han nodded, seeming to remember the previous matter, looking at Su Mu with hesitant eyes. Su Mu probably knew what Wen Han wanted to say, she smiled gently: "You want to talk about what I just promised Auntie? You know, I just..."
Wen Han didn’t want to hear things he didn’t want to hear from her mouth and cut her off: "I know, you’re just afraid of further stimulating my mom, so it’s just a temporary measure."
"Yes."
"Regardless, I owe you my thanks. Thank you for being so considerate of my mom and putting yourself through this."
"It’s okay," Su Mu said. "As long as Auntie gets better, she can do anything."
Wen Han and Su Mu were outside for only half an hour. By the time they returned to the ward, Zhou Yaxian’s mood had evidently improved a lot. Wen Han found it strange, and upon asking the nurse, learned that Zhou Yaxian had made countless phone calls within that half-hour, telling all her relatives and friends that her son was getting engaged, with even the nurse offering them congratulations.
Wen Han frowned slightly, looking at Su Mu with deep apology:
"I really didn’t expect my mom to suddenly do this, I..."
"It’s okay," Su Mu said cautiously, glancing at Zhou Yaxian. "Let’s stabilize Auntie’s mood first."
Wen Han nodded, turning back to Zhou Yaxian’s bedside. Before he could say anything, Zhou Yaxian mentioned that she had already picked a good date at the end of the month and had announced the engagement date to everyone.
