Chapter 442: Chapter 442: The Moment of Departure, In the Name of the Wife
Due to Su Mu’s trembling, Qiqi shuffled restlessly in Su Mu’s arms. Su Mu immediately froze, her gaze fixed intently on Qiqi in her embrace. Seeing her quiet down, she felt even more intense hatred toward the man behind her. She released his hand, looked at the blood mark she had bitten into it without a shred of embarrassment, and whispered softly,
"Get up, let’s go outside to talk if you have something to say."
"Qiqi is scared."
"If you keep this up, I won’t care if I wake Qiqi."
Fu Shinian knew not to push too hard and not to corner Su Mu too quickly. He smiled slightly, stood up from behind her, and Su Mu sighed in relief. Then she carefully moved Qiqi’s arm from around her neck, grateful that she had slept and was no longer as dependent on her as before.
Su Mu got out of bed, turned around, and glared fiercely at Fu Shinian. Fu Shinian, seeing this, smiled slightly,
"We might scare Qiqi if we go out and she wakes to find us gone. Let’s go to the balcony, I really do have something to say to you."
Su Mu looked at him and warned,
"If you dare do anything to me again, I’m not afraid to disturb the old lady."
"OK," Fu Shinian chuckled lightly, "I promise I won’t do anything further to you."
Despite his words, Su Mu didn’t believe him, she remained cautious. Even when they reached the balcony, she kept a substantial distance from him. Fu Shinian true to his word, didn’t pressure her and just sat down in a wicker chair,
"The results of those check-ups you did at the hospital are all out. You’ve been busy these past few days, so I didn’t tell you."
Su Mu glanced at him,
"There shouldn’t be any problems, right?"
"How do you know there’s no problem?"
"Had there been a problem, you would have told me sooner, rather than wait until I’m done dealing with the Wen Family’s business."
Fu Shinian barely smiled,
"I’ll take that as you acknowledging that I’m always looking after you."
Su Mu laughed softly without replying, and Fu Shinian continued,
"You’re right. You are healthy according to every check-up. This pretty much confirms that everything Xu Yansu said was true. What she injected into you wasn’t a virus, just a sleeping drug; otherwise, it wouldn’t have taken so long to manifest."
Fu Shinian paused for a moment and chuckled,
"Though, even if something had been found now, you’d probably just have to wait for your death."
Su Mu looked at Fu Shinian, "I don’t quite understand what you mean by that."
"You’ve been too busy these days, you probably haven’t had time to look at the news, right?"
"What happened?"
"The old house caught fire," Fu Shinian looked at her, "Xu Yansu is dead."
Su Mu looked at Fu Shinian in shock,
"When did it happen?"
"The night after our hospital check-up. I had planned to clear things up with Xu Yansu after your business with the Wen Family was completely over, and to tell her the marriage was never real. But she probably didn’t want to live. Although her crimes wouldn’t give her the death penalty, she faced several years in prison. To her, everything would be gone after that, including her youth. So she must have chosen to end it all this way?"
Su Mu stayed silent for a long time before sitting down on another wicker chair beside Fu Shinian. She gazed out at the heavy rain and spoke slowly,
"Are we sure it was suicide?"
"The police investigated the scene and confirmed it was suicide after checking the DNA of the body."
Su Mu sighed softly,
"I can somewhat understand her feelings. Even though you didn’t like her, even despised her, she still wanted to be with you, debasing her own emotions, choosing death in the identity of your wife. She must know you would opt for divorce, so from the moment she married you, she never considered being apart. But her method was too extreme. She might have thought by leaving this world before the divorce, she would always be your wife. But once in the afterlife, realizing it was all fake, I wonder how she would feel about that marriage certificate with no legal efficiency?"
Fu Shinian looked at Su Mu,
"Are you feeling indignant on her behalf?"
"No," Su Mu said lightly, "I just think she is pitiable, never having achieved what she wanted in her lifetime."
"There’s nothing pitiable about it, those who are pitiable always have detestable aspects. Had it not been for what she and Shi Lihua did, would there ever have been such a long separation between me, you, and Qiqi?"
The conversation had circled back to them. Su Mu, having already said too much, no longer wanted to continue and stood up from the wicker chair,
"Qiqi is asleep, you stay here with her. I’m leaving."
"Where are you going?"
Fu Shinian stood, grabbing Su Mu’s hand, "Are you leaving again?"
"Yes, I can’t stay."
"You’ve been here two hours and haven’t called Wen Han, don’t you think he’s guessed? He hasn’t called, not because he isn’t worried, but because he probably knew it would end this way."
Su Mu then remembered her promise to Wen Han, quickly pulled out her phone, and sure enough, there were no unread messages or missed calls. However, this wasn’t an excuse for her to stay the night. She put her phone away and looked at Fu Shinian,
"Even without Wen Han, I don’t want to stay here."
Fu Shinian looked at her,
"Must you go back?"
"Yes."
"Alright," Fu Shinian conceded, "I’ll take you."
"No need, you better stay here with Qiqi. She can’t be left alone."
Fu Shinian looked at Su Mu, "It’s late; how can I let you go alone? Don’t say you’ll be fine. Nobody knows they’re in danger until something happens. I can’t take that risk."
Su Mu knew Fu Shinian’s stubbornness—if she didn’t agree, she might not be able to leave tonight. But Qiqi needed someone by her side. If she called Auntie Lin now, she might disturb the old lady, and if Qiqi woke up to see Auntie Lin, she would surely be inconsolable.
Sighing,
"Can I just not go, OK?"
Fu Shinian smiled, looking at Su Mu, "Really?"
"Really, really. Now disappear from my sight. I don’t want to see you anymore."
Su Mu had pressed down her anger as much as possible, unsure when it might erupt. So, before that happened, she needed Fu Shinian to leave, because seeing his face just made her angrier and angrier. Luckily, Fu Shinian was someone who knew when to stop. After hearing her words, he quickly complied, but before leaving, he swiftly embraced Su Mu, and even stole a kiss from her lips before she could react. He was then off the balcony, carefully leaving the master bedroom.
