Chapter 439: Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself
Chapter 439: Chapter 439: Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself
Until Su Mu had finished dinner, Wen Han had been reading the newspaper without mentioning the words Zhou Yaxian wanted him to say. However, Su Mu’s heart hadn’t relaxed, yet she couldn’t just keep silent. When she got up to clear the table and head to the kitchen, Wen Han put down the newspaper and spoke:
"I’ll do it."
"No need," Su Mu stopped him, "I’ll take care of it. You rest."
Wen Han didn’t say anything more, but still took over the chore from Su Mu’s hands. Su Mu, left with no choice, just tidied up the table and carried the remaining dishes to the kitchen. Since they contained seafood, they couldn’t be left, so Su Mu dumped them in the trash, then placed them gently in the sink. Wen Han gave her a glance and smiled faintly:
"That’s enough, you can go out. You don’t have to keep me company here."
Su Mu gave a light smile but didn’t leave, standing to one side watching Wen Han wash the dishes.
When everything was cleaned up, Wen Han took her by the hand:
"Do you want to go for a walk, or watch some TV?"
"Auntie and Shaoyuan are already asleep. Let’s not watch TV; it might disturb them."
Wen Han nodded, "Then I’ll accompany you for a walk."
Su Mu didn’t actually eat much, not even enough to take a walk to digest it, but since Wen Han suggested it, she couldn’t refuse. She smiled and followed him out the door.
They didn’t go far, just strolling around in the courtyard. Even though it was still summer, the air wasn’t muggy, thanks to the rain over the past few days. Instead, it was comfortably cool, allowing Su Mu and Wen Han to walk slowly side by side in an atmosphere so pleasant that she almost forgot the words she had heard earlier.
It wasn’t until later that Wen Han spoke up:
"If my guess is correct, you must have heard the conversation between my mother and me, right?"
Wen Han’s words made Su Mu stop walking subconsciously. She looked at Wen Han, wanting to say something, but ultimately didn’t know what to say. In the end, she only said, "I... It wasn’t on purpose, I just..."
"I know," Wen Han smiled faintly. "Anyone in such a situation would have listened to the entire conversation. You don’t need to explain anything to me; I understand."
Su Mu didn’t say anything. Wen Han turned to look at her:
"I didn’t want to talk to you about this, but since you’ve heard it, I want to know what you think. Can you tell me?"
Su Mu was silent for a few seconds, then gave an awkward smile:
"From Auntie’s point of view, she’s not wrong."
"And yours? I want to know what you think."
Su Mu fell silent, then began to walk forward again. Wen Han didn’t press her, and followed slowly behind her. He was even prepared for Su Mu to give him no answer that night, but it wasn’t long before she stopped, turned around, and looked at him seriously:
"What about you? You want to get married, right?"
Wen Han smiled slightly:
"Since I started liking you, I’ve always intended to marry you. A great man once said that a courtship not aimed at marriage is just fooling around. I thought you understood that already."
Su Mu gave a light smile:
"But Wen Han, we haven’t known each other for very long."
"Not long enough for you to trust that I can make you happy? To commit your life to me?"
"It’s not that," Su Mu looked at him. "I don’t know if I’m really right for you."
"Isn’t that for me to know?"
Su Mu shook her head:
"Since we’ve been together, I’ve been trying to like you, but so many things have happened around us lately, so many that we haven’t had time to consider our own feelings. So I’m still confused about my feelings for you... If I can’t fall in love with you, I don’t want to keep you waiting. When I said let’s try, it was to give myself a chance, not just to enjoy your love while offering nothing in return."
"What if I don’t mind?"
Su Mu gave a faint smile:
"Wen Han, I know you’ve thought about every word you’re saying, and I don’t doubt it, but I’ve experienced loving someone who doesn’t love me back. At first, it seems alright – a lifelong unrequited love, but over time, everyone grows weary, languid, resentful, begrudging. I’m a prime example. You say you don’t care if I don’t like you, but Wen Han, a lifetime is so, so long. How could you endure not being loved the whole time? Even if you could, I can’t be so selfish to let you go through the torment I’ve faced."
Wen Han looked at Su Mu without saying a word but understood her answer.
"Do not do to others what you would not have them do to you," Su Mu said calmly. "I really can’t ignore your feelings."
After Su Mu said all this, Wen Han was silent for a long time, then he smiled lightly:
"I understand. Even if I have the confidence to keep my promise, you dare not trust it. The future is so long, with so many variables; there’s no reason to make you take such a risk."
Su Mu wanted to say something, but Wen Han raised his hand to stop her:
"Su Mu, you’ve been hurt once, and it’s only right to be cautious about love now. Even if I’m confident, I wouldn’t dare to make any definite promises, to stay with you forever. You’re right, I won’t bring this up again, and I’ll handle things with my mother so that you won’t be troubled by it."
"Wen Han, I..."
"Maybe it’s because I haven’t done enough that you still don’t like me. Indeed, there have been too many things before, but there will be nothing to worry about in the future. I should focus more on you. Perhaps with my efforts, you’ll come to like me, and even want to marry me of your own accord."
Su Mu smiled at these words:
"Even so, I won’t be the one to bring up marriage."
Wen Han hugged her:
"I know, so I’ll do it. I can feel whether you like me or not. The moment I’m sure you like me, I’ll propose to you."
Su Mu looked at Wen Han:
"Thank you, Wen Han."
Wen Han smiled faintly but said no more. As they were walking back, Su Mu’s phone suddenly rang. It was a call from Qiqi, who was sobbing at the other end, "Su Mu, where are you? Why haven’t you come back? Qiqi misses you so much, Qiqi is scared..."
Su Mu glanced at the pitch-black sky, which indeed looked quite menacing, as if it could rain again at any moment. Qiqi was genuinely scared of such weather. She replied:
"Don’t be scared, Qiqi. I’m coming to get you now; you wait for me."
"Okay, come back quickly; I’ll wait for you."
Su Mu hung up and turned to look at Wen Han, who immediately said before she could speak:
"I’ll take you back."
