Chapter 438: Chapter 438: Facing Departure, Learning to Accept

Zhou Yaxian’s words had found their way to Wen Han, but he couldn’t agree:

"Mom, Su Mu isn’t that kind of person."

"I know very well what kind of person Su Mu is, but life is unpredictable. Do you have the assurance that Su Mu will never ask for a breakup? Can you guarantee that there is absolutely no chance for Su Mu and Fu Shinian to get back together? Don’t overlook the fact that they have a child together. Parents can endure anything for the sake of a child, especially since Qiqi is so fond of Fu Shinian. If Su Mu truly wanted to reconcile and break up with you, what would you do?"

Wen Han remained silent, but such a silence undoubtedly meant that he lacked confidence in his own feelings. Zhou Yaxian sighed:

"I know that even if you two are together now, there’s not much emotion between you. I wasn’t in a hurry originally; I thought that as long as you were together, things could develop slowly. But now, I wish I could prepare everything, all the things. Have you thought about marrying Su Mu?"

"Mom..."

"Even if you don’t get married right now, at least get engaged. At the very least, let me rest assured, and let your dad depart in peace." Zhou Yaxian’s voice was choked with emotion: "There are some things your dad and I never mentioned to you, not because we weren’t aware or worried. Ever since Zhuo Qing left, you’ve never touched a romantic relationship again. Even when you were with Zhuo Qing, it was because her mother schemed, got pregnant, and you reluctantly took on the responsibility."

"After Zhuo Qing left, you poured all your energy into the military, and you hardly cared for Shaoyuan. I’m not saying you were not good to Shaoyuan, but such a young child, without a mother and rarely seeing his father, you must know how pitiable that is. Then, I also mentioned to you time and again the idea of finding someone else while Shaoyuan is still young, and you never really listened. Your dad and I truly thought you’d spend your life alone. Did you know how much your dad smoked behind your back, and how often he couldn’t sleep at night because of your issues?"

"We only have you as a son, no brothers or sisters. When we’re gone, you’ll have no one by your side. How can we have peace of mind?"

"Mom, don’t I still have Shaoyuan?"

"Shaoyuan? Shaoyuan will have his own family too. Once Shaoyuan gets married, are you going to live alone? Alone until the end?" Zhou Yaxian looked at Wen Han, "I don’t want to pressure you. I want you to follow your own pace, and I don’t want to be a nagging elder. But after your dad’s incident, I really can’t help but worry for you. If you’re embarrassed to talk to Su Mu about it, I will talk to her."

Wen Han let out a sigh:

"I understand. You don’t have to step in; I’ll talk to her."

"Really?"

"Mm." Wen Han was silent for a few seconds, "I’m not lying to you."

Zhou Yaxian smiled faintly, "As long as you understand, that’s good. Su Mu is a good girl. Having her by your side would relieve me, and your dad would be at ease too."

Su Mu, standing at the turn of the second floor, listened to their conversation without missing a word. She hadn’t intended to eavesdrop, but being personally involved, she couldn’t help it. Jiang Bei was right; Zhou Yaxian indeed had the idea of getting her and Wen Han to marry soon. Standing in the position of an elder, there was nothing wrong with that, but Su Mu felt indescribably oppressed.

It wasn’t right for Su Mu to go down to that scene, nor did it feel appropriate to go to Wen Han’s room, so she went to Wen Shaoyuan’s room nearby. Wen Shaoyuan hadn’t fallen asleep yet and looked up politely when he saw Su Mu:

"Aunt Su."

Su Mu walked over and sat down by Wen Shaoyuan’s bed:

"Why aren’t you asleep yet?"

"I can’t seem to sleep."

Su Mu noticed the photo in Wen Shaoyuan’s hand—it was a family portrait previously hidden under his pillow. She could tell that he was thinking of his grandfather. Su Mu reached out and gently stroked his hair:

"We all face different kinds of departures. Even though it’s cruel, nobody can avoid it. You’re still young, but as you grow, such cruel things will become more frequent. Of course we feel sad and pained, but Shaoyuan, the people who make us sad are also those who love us very much. They wouldn’t want the people they love to be upset because of them. Do you understand?"

Wen Shaoyuan nodded:

"I understand."

"No one in this world can walk with another forever, even the people who are closest to us, even those we love most. We have to learn to accept it. In fact, as long as you think of him, remember him, and don’t forget him, then he hasn’t truly left, just changed the way he accompanies us."

Wen Shaoyuan looked at the smiling face of Wen Songyan in the family picture, smiled faintly, wiped the photo gently, and put it back in its place. He hugged Su Mu:

"Thank you, Aunt Su. I understand now."

After watching Wen Shaoyuan fall asleep, Su Mu carefully left his room, only to unexpectedly encounter Wen Han waiting outside at the door. He didn’t seem to have just arrived; instead, he appeared to have been there for quite some time. Su Mu carefully closed the door and looked to Wen Han:

"Why didn’t you go in?"

"I heard you and Shaoyuan talking amiably; I didn’t want to interrupt."

Su Mu smiled faintly, "He’s your son."

Wen Han did not pursue this topic but instead looked at Su Mu:

"When did you wake up?"

Recalling the conversation she had overheard between mother and son, Su Mu hesitated for a second before replying, "Not long ago, I slept too much."

"Uh-huh, I knew you were tired, so I didn’t wake you. But I left you dinner in the kitchen. I’ll accompany you to eat something."

Su Mu wasn’t really hungry, but if she didn’t go now, she was afraid she would have to go back to the room with Wen Han. She needed an excuse to return, as she couldn’t stay here indefinitely.

In the dining room on the first floor, Su Mu was instructed to take a seat at the table while he directly went to the kitchen to heat up the meal. In no time, he brought the food to the table, consisting of three dishes and a soup. Su Mu spoke, "You really didn’t have to go to all this trouble. Eating so much late at night, I’m afraid it won’t digest well."

"Did you sleep so much that you’re still tired?"

Su Mu shook her head, slightly embarrassed: "Not tired."

"Then it’s fine. After eating, you can take a walk or watch some TV, and you can rest when you’re tired again."

Su Mu picked up her bowl and chopsticks and began to eat slowly. However, Wen Han sat across from her, not moving to leave, which made Su Mu somewhat uncomfortable:

"You probably haven’t slept much, right? Maybe you should rest first; you don’t have to stay here with me."

"It’s okay." Wen Han casually picked up a newspaper from next to him, "I slept well. Don’t worry about me. If you feel uncomfortable, I can go to the living room."

"No need."

With a brief response, Su Mu stopped talking and silently continued eating. Yet, her heart was in turmoil. She feared that Wen Han would bring up marriage at any moment.
