Chapter 436: Chapter 436: Don’t Leave, Stay with Me Always
Su Mu didn’t quite understand Jiang Bei’s words as she looked at her:
"What do you mean?"
"Having gone through the sudden departure of my uncle, my aunt must be making plans for her own future too. She will probably take care of all the unfinished and desired things while her health still allows it. Her biggest worry is probably whether Wen Han will end up alone for life, so I think after the funeral, she will want you and Wen Han to get married."
Su Mu had never thought about this issue, and upon hearing Jiang Bei say this, she couldn’t help but pause, then she smiled and said, "That probably won’t happen, right?"
"I hope it doesn’t, but I understand my aunt and know how she acts and behaves. I think it’s quite possible, so you’d better prepare early. I know you don’t intend to marry Wen Han right now, but given what has happened, I don’t think you’ll find it easy to refuse. Even if you are to refuse, you should find a tactful reason."
Although Su Mu found it surprising, she knew that if Jiang Bei was speaking to her so seriously, it was likely to happen. She was shaken, but still thanked her:
"I understand, thank you for telling me all this."
Jiang Bei slightly tugged at the corner of her mouth:
"Although I would like to see you and Wen Han get married, you are my best friend, and I understand your feelings to an extent. Plus, you haven’t been dating Wen Han for more than a few days. Such a big leap is hard to accept, not just for you, but for me as well. I’m telling you this just so you are a bit prepared."
"I know."
At 8 o’clock, Su Mu received a call from Fu Shinian. She wasn’t really in the mood to answer, but since Qiqi was with him and worried something might have happened to her, she felt obliged to pick up. He must have heard the news, and his tone became serious and precise:
"Are you okay?"
Su Mu was sitting on a bench in the corridor at the time. The corridor was silent, no longer bustling with hospital visitors. She nodded and softly replied:
"I’m okay."
"Things have happened, and everyone has done their best. There’s not much you can do being at the hospital, but take good care of yourself, don’t exhaust yourself. If not for your own sake, then for Qiqi. She is worried about you and really wants to visit the hospital, but I was concerned it wouldn’t be convenient, so I’ve been consoling her."
"Thank you."
Fu Shinian’s actions were truly considering Su Mu. Although Qiqi had a good relationship with the Wen Family, at a time like this, even Su Mu could not properly look after Qiqi. So if she came over, it would only mean Fu Shinian would have to accompany her. His appearance at such a time would undoubtedly be inappropriate. Though he wouldn’t consider so much, he ultimately took Su Mu’s standpoint into account.
Therefore, Su Mu’s thanks were sincere.
Knowing she had a lot on her plate, he didn’t say much more. After giving her a few more instructions, Fu Shinian hung up, and Su Mu sat for a long while in the darkening corridor before getting up and returning to the ward.
The following days were doubtlessly busy and sorrowful. Wen Han hadn’t rested well since Wen Songyan fell ill. Now, he had to muster his energy to handle all sorts of affairs. Even with help, many tasks had to be taken care of personally. It seemed as if he had lost weight overnight due to the stress.
Zhou Yaxian’s emotional state didn’t need to be mentioned; she appeared lifeless, sitting in front of the mourning hall, silently crying as she looked at Wen Songyan’s body. Wen Shaoyuan also became less talkative.
The sudden loss of a family member changed the entire household.
On the day the funeral ended, Zhou Yaxian’s emotions were finally allowed to pour out. After everyone left the gravesite, leaving only family, she cried by the tombstone for a long time. Wen Han, unable to bear it, wanted to console her but was stopped by Su Mu:
"Let Aunt cry it out; she’s been holding back for too long. It’s not good to keep it all in."
Wen Han said nothing upon hearing this, but just stood quietly beside Su Mu, accompanying her.
After her cry, Zhou Yaxian seemed much better. Although her complexion wasn’t great, her spirit was not as listless as before, which eased Wen Han’s worries. Back at the Wen Family home, seeing the place he had lived with his loved one, Zhou Yaxian’s mood fluctuated again, but she had learned to control it and accept it. Wen Han, however, was concerned:
"Mom, if you’re unhappy living here, we can move out."
"There’s no need. This place has your dad’s presence," Zhou Yaxian said as she glanced at the room’s furnishings. "We were busy with work before and hardly saw each other once a month. All our memories are in this house. I don’t want to go anywhere else."
Wen Han didn’t say anything more. Zhou Yaxian stood up from the sofa:
"Su Mu, you’ve been wiped out these past few days too. Get some good rest; I’m going upstairs."
"Aunt, I’ll come with you," Su Mu said, getting up from the sofa to go up with Zhou Yaxian, but before she could take a step, Zhou Yaxian stopped her with a slight smile, "You don’t need to accompany me. I have to get used to living without him; the sooner, the better. Don’t worry, I will be fine; you should stay with Wen Han, he’s also having a hard time."
With the conversation turning to this point, Su Mu couldn’t say much more, only watching as Zhou Yaxian went upstairs. Wen Shaoyuan silently stood up from the sofa after a few seconds:
"I’m going upstairs to rest too."
Su Mu called out to him:
"Shaoyuan."
Wen Shaoyuan turned back to look at Su Mu, waiting for her to speak. Looking at him with sympathy, Su Mu said, "If you need it, I can have Qiqi come over to keep you company."
"Thanks, Aunt Su, but not now," Wen Shaoyuan paused, "I want to make Qiqi happy, but with how I am now, I can’t seem to cheer her up. She’s so young, it’s better she doesn’t know about these things. I’ll visit her in a couple of days once I’ve adjusted. Please tell her I’m fine, there’s nothing wrong."
Su Mu nodded:
"Okay, I’ll tell her."
"Thanks, Aunt Su."
Wen Shaoyuan went upstairs as well, leaving only Su Mu and an exhausted Wen Han sitting on the sofa resting his eyes. Su Mu sat down beside him and softly said, "It’s uncomfortable lying here, go back to your room and rest properly."
Wen Han suddenly grabbed Su Mu’s hand:
"Stay with me."
Su Mu was startled, even her movements froze for a moment, but before she could respond, Wen Han opened his eyes, his gaze intent as he looked at her, "You don’t want to?"
"It’s not that," Su Mu replied to Wen Han, who rarely had such an imposing demeanor. Considering what had happened, emotions were bound to be affected, but Su Mu didn’t take it to heart, smiling slightly, "I was just wondering how best to accompany you."
Wen Han stood up, holding her hand, and walked towards the upstairs bedroom: "Don’t leave me; just stay by my side."
