Chapter 435: Chapter 435: Unharmed, Sudden Change in the Wen Family

Because of what Fu Shinian said, Qiao Yu was silent for a long time before he spoke:

"What do you mean?"

"We all know that Ji Nanfeng, although he is quite the playboy, he wouldn’t do something so despicable. All the women who have been with him have been treated with great affection. Do you think he would be so cruel to his own wife? If my guess is right, he must have some reason that he hasn’t told us about, and he’s doing this on purpose."

"Does he... does he have an illness?"

Qiao Yu was so angry that he stood up from his chair: "Even if there is a reason, treating his own wife this way, it’s even worse than how you treated Su Mu at the beginning."

Fu Shinian: "...Can you please watch your language?"

Qiao Yu glanced at Fu Shinian and sat down again: "I’m just telling it like it is."

Fu Shinian gave a soft snort and didn’t pay attention to him, but Qiao Yu’s mind was filled with many questions:

"Then why is he doing this? Is it like you, to protect Jiang Bei’s safety? But all those shady dealings of his have been gone for years, and he’s been leading a peaceful life. What kind of unspeakable reasons could he have? Could it be that he is terminally ill and about to die?"

"That’s not necessarily the case."

Qiao Yu: "..."

The two hadn’t talked much longer when the office door was knocked. Qiao Yu gathered his thoughts and allowed the person outside to come in. A nurse walked in with Su Mu’s medical report from the morning.

"Doctor Qiao, Miss Su’s medical report is out."

Qiao Yu hastily stood up, snatched the report, and looked at it over and over. Fu Shinian remained calm throughout, not moving a muscle, but his gaze stayed fixed on Qiao Yu’s face, not letting even the slightest change escape him. Even so, he couldn’t see any trace of emotion on Qiao Yu’s face as if he had a poker face, showing no emotions.

In the end, Fu Shinian couldn’t hold back:

"How is it?"

Qiao Yu flipped through the report, casting a sidelong glance at him: "I thought you didn’t care?"

"I’m not in the mood for jokes. How is Su Mu’s health, really?"

Although only a few items came out in the report, the results were quite satisfactory. Qiao Yu threw the finished report directly to Fu Shinian, who was too lazy to look: "I can’t understand it, can you stop beating around the bush and just tell me the result."

Qiao Yu smiled faintly:

"You can rest assured, Su Mu is fine."

"Are you sure?"

"At least there’s no virus found in the blood so far. I believe what Xu Yansu told you is true. Even if it was a highly sophisticated virus, after so much time, there would have been some evidence in the blood." Qiao Yu closed the last report: "I think there’s no problem now if you trust my word."

Of course, he trusted him.

Fu Shinian let out a heavy sigh of relief: "That’s good to hear."

After leaving Qiao Yu’s office, Fu Shinian went to find Su Mu. He tried calling her, but it was still unreachable. He then decided that he would take her phone and remove himself from her blacklist the next time he saw her, but what Fu Shinian didn’t anticipate was that he wouldn’t get the chance.

When he found Su Mu in the emergency staircase, she was on a phone call, her entire demeanor tensed up. Clearly, it was an important call. Fu Shinian stood behind her in silence, not wanting to disturb her, until she said:

"Okay, I’ll bring Shaoyuan to the hospital right now."

Fu Shinian was startled.

Su Mu seemed a bit panicked. They were on the seventh floor, and she was about to head down the emergency stairs without a backward glance. Fu Shinian called out to stop her:

"Su Mu."

She didn’t hear him. Fu Shinian took a few quick steps to block her path, and just as Su Mu was about to lash out at his obstruction, Fu Shinian spoke first: "The elevator is stopped on the seventh floor. It will be faster by elevator; I’ll take you."

Before Su Mu could react, Fu Shinian had already pulled her toward the elevator, and by the time she realized that Jiang Bei would probably be on his way to the military hospital too, Fu Shinian had already driven away from the hospital. Su Mu softly spoke up:

"I should have called Jiang Bei."

Fu Shinian glanced at her: "I sent Ji Nanfeng a text. He’ll catch up. Don’t worry."

"But right now..."

"They all understand the priorities."

Su Mu stopped dwelling on the subject, saying instead, "Please hurry, I’m worried about Shaoyuan..."

"Don’t worry, Song Yi has already driven Shaoyuan there, and I’m taking you directly to the hospital now."

When Su Mu heard this, she looked at Fu Shinian, unaware of when exactly he had managed to get everything in order without her needing to worry about anything.

"Thank you."

Fu Shinian glanced at Su Mu and lightly ruffled her hair without saying anything else.

When Su Mu arrived at the hospital, Song Yi’s car had also just arrived. Wen Shaoyuan and Su Mu caught sight of each other. Wen Shaoyuan seemed to realize something, his eyes red. Qiqi was holding his hand tightly at his side, also looking quite sentimental. Su Mu walked over and took Wen Shaoyuan’s hand:

"Don’t be afraid, let’s go inside."

When they reached the ICU, there were already many people standing around. Seeing Wen Shaoyuan, everyone automatically made way for him to pass through. Ji Qingluan stood at the door of the ICU, silently watching inside. Su Mu stood in front of her, looking through the heavy glass into the room:

"How is it now?"

Ji Qingluan looked back at Su Mu and began to speak,

"Second hemorrhage. He just finished the second surgery, but the bleeding was even more severe than the last time, and he has not resumed spontaneous breathing up to now. The doctors say even if he regains consciousness, he would be in a vegetative state, but that would be the best outcome. The worse outcome is that he may never wake up again."

Wen Shaoyuan then tugged at Su Mu’s hand,

"Aunt Su, I want to go in and see Grandpa."

Wen Shaoyuan’s eyes were already swirling with tears, but he kept holding back, not crying nor making a scene, always remaining obedient and understanding. Su Mu couldn’t bear to refuse him, and she couldn’t refuse him, so she took him to the changing room nearby, helped him into the gown, and sent him in.

Su Mu had also wanted to go in, but the doctors did not allow it; there were already too many people inside. Su Mu didn’t insist. After coming out of the changing room, she stood by the window.

With Wen Shaoyuan gone, Qiqi felt uneasy amid so many solemn-faced people in the corridor, so she reached out her arms for Su Mu to hold her. Su Mu bent down and picked her up in her arms. She also saw the scene inside the ward, blinking her eyes as she looked at Wen Songyan lying on the bed and at Wen Shaoyuan, who was silently shedding tears by the bedside. Qiqi quietly asked Su Mu,

"Wood, what’s wrong with Grandpa Wen?"

Su Mu patted her head but didn’t know what to say, as the reality of life and death was something a child would not understand.

For two consecutive days, there was no good news about Wen Songyan’s condition. In the early morning of the third day, a new round of crisis occurred. After tense resuscitation, the doctor came out of the ward and gently shook his head. Su Mu felt numb for the most part; she could feel Wen Han gripping her hand more and more tightly, and then gently letting go. He still politely thanked the doctor,

"Thank you."

The doctor sighed and left without saying anything more.

Zhou Yaxian and Wen Shaoyuan were still in the ward with Wen Songyan. Since it was early morning, not many people stayed at the hospital. Seeing Wen Han’s exhausted look, Su Mu really wanted him to rest for a while but didn’t know what he truly wanted to do at this time; she could only tentatively ask,

"Do you want to go back in?"

Wen Han shook his head and sat down on the bench next to him, "Just wait a while, talk to me."

Su Mu sat down beside him. Wen Han grasped her hand and gave a desolate smile,

"These last few days have been hard on you, too, staying with me in the hospital without leaving."

"It’s not hard. I can’t be much help, but I feel good about being able to be here with you."

"Thank you." Wen Han brought Su Mu’s hand to his lips and gently kissed it.

Wen Han hadn’t slept for several days and had lost a lot of weight, his stubble clearly visible on his chin. At this moment, leaning against the wall and staring blankly at the medical propaganda slogans across from him, Su Mu followed his gaze and quietly said,

"I don’t know what to say right now to comfort you. I’ve experienced this kind of pain before and know it’s useless to say anything. But you still have your aunt and Shaoyuan, no matter how hard it is, you have to keep going. But you don’t have to in front of me. You can let out your emotions, don’t keep suppressing them so much. Since the accident, you’ve been so calm, I’m afraid you can’t handle it all inside."

A minute after Su Mu finished speaking, Wen Han slowly looked at her. Judging by his expression, he seemed to want to smile, but ultimately, he failed, his eyes reddening instead. At the moment Su Mu reached out to touch his face, he opened his arms and hugged her tightly.

Wen Han was a soldier, a man, but he too needed to vent his emotions. No one can bear too much negativity, or eventually, the strings will break.

"I never thought he would leave us so soon."

Su Mu gently patted his back, "I know."

No one could have foreseen such a sudden event happening to someone who was usually so healthy and robust, leaving everyone unable to accept it.

Wen Han didn’t continue to speak, just silently hugged Su Mu for a while and didn’t move for a long time. Su Mu thought he had fallen asleep. Considering the subsequent matters were likely to be even harder to accept, a few minutes of sleep would be good. However, before her thought had fully formed, the door to the ward was opened by Wen Shaoyuan. Standing at the doorway, he called out uncontrollably for the first time:

"Dad, Dad..."

Su Mu felt Wen Han stiffen in her arms, then he almost reflexively got up and ran towards the ward. Su Mu also got up and walked towards the ward, but just as she reached the doorway, she heard Zhou Yaxian’s cries...

The doctors, alerted, bustled in and out of the ward. Su Mu stood by Zhou Yaxian’s side, supporting her as she looked on, praying in her heart for a miracle that Wen Songyan would pull through—even if he didn’t regain consciousness, even if he became a vegetable, it would be a source of solace for Zhou Yaxian, Wen Han, and Wen Shaoyuan. But the world is often not so kind, and after half an hour of emergency resuscitation, the undulating line on the ECG eventually flattened and did not revive.

Wen Songyan was gone. He had collapsed without warning, not leaving a word for his family. Perhaps even he had not anticipated leaving so abruptly; otherwise, he would have surely put his family’s affairs in order to spare them this heart-wrenching pain.

Zhou Yaxian fainted, and the ward was again thrown into chaos. It was destined to be a night filled with both disorder and sorrow, an outcome no one could change.

Wen Han had to deal with Wen Songyan’s funeral arrangements, so Su Mu stayed in the ward to watch over Zhou Yaxian. She didn’t remain unconscious for long, but when she awoke, she remained quiet for a long time, just shedding tears. Su Mu felt a deep sorrow watching this scene and wanted to say something to comfort her, but what use would it be?

When Jiang Bei and Ji Nanfeng arrived, Wen Songyan had already been taken to the mortuary, awaiting transport to the Funeral Home the next morning. Ji Nanfeng went to see Wen Han, while Jiang Bei came directly to the ward. Seeing Zhou Yaxian in such a state, Jiang Bei’s eyes also reddened for once as she tightly hugged Zhou Yaxian, calling out "Auntie."

But Zhou Yaxian, as if she hadn’t heard, just silently wept. No one knew what to say at that moment.

Perhaps several days of caregiving had tired Zhou Yaxian out too much, for she fell asleep again as dawn slightly brightened the sky. Although her sleep was restless, her emotions managed to relax for a moment, which was not bad.

Jiang Bei and Su Mu didn’t dare to leave and had to sit on the living room sofa on guard. It wasn’t until Wen Han, looking exhausted, pushed the door open and entered that Su Mu got up from the sofa. Wen Han glanced at her, then went straight to the bedside to look at Zhou Yaxian and breathed out softly. He whispered to Jiang Bei,

"Su Mu has been at the hospital for two days; you go ahead and take her home to rest."

"I’m not going back," Su Mu said to Wen Han. "How can I leave at a time like this?"

"There’s nothing else happening for now. Once the body is moved to the Funeral Home, the only thing left is the memorial service. We, as a family, can’t really make decisions about my dad’s funeral service, so you just need to be there when the time comes. There’s no need to trouble yourself these next few days."

Su Mu shook her head,

"I’m not leaving. I know I can’t be of much help, but I can at least watch over Auntie. If Auntie wakes up and wants to go home, I’ll go with her. She’s not in a state to be alone, and with Jiang Bei pregnant, you can’t expect Auntie Li to stay with her."

Wen Han looked at Su Mu, about to say something, but Su Mu stopped him,

"You have so many things to take care of. You don’t need to worry about me at all right now. I’ll take good care of Auntie, as well as myself. Don’t worry."

Wen Han looked at Su Mu for a few more seconds and ultimately didn’t say anything else. After one last glance at Zhou Yaxian, who was sleeping restlessly in bed, he turned and left to continue with his busy schedule. Su Mu walked over to the bed, tucked Zhou Yaxian in again, and once she had resettled on the sofa, Jiang Bei spoke up softly,

"Susu, you have to prepare yourself mentally."
