Chapter 407: Chapter 407: Since It Was in the Past, Why Take It Seriously
Su Mu watched Jiang Bei with disbelief. She had never thought Jiang Bei married Ji Nanfeng because she had given up all hope and expectation for love and therefore chose this path. Without expectations for herself, she naturally had none for others, making Ji Nanfeng undoubtedly the best choice.
She didn’t love him, so his affairs naturally couldn’t hurt her.
"You..."
"Hard to believe, right?" Jiang Bei stopped walking and sat down on a stone bench. "It’s quite alright, you shouldn’t feel outraged or embarrassed for me. I really don’t feel wronged. It’s just that we agreed that no matter what, it shouldn’t be exposed by the media. I didn’t expect him to not keep that promise."
Su Mu sat beside her, her gaze involuntarily falling on Jiang Bei’s stomach. Jiang Bei, noticing this, gave a slight smile:
"It’s an accident."
Su Mu asked no further. With Jiang Bei describing the child as an "accident," it already signified her wish not to talk about it. Su Mu understood this and naturally wouldn’t pry, but there was still something else she couldn’t figure out:
"Why did you come to Rong Shen’s place?"
Jiang Bei couldn’t help but let out a bitter laugh:
"If I said I was kidnapped here by him, would you believe it?"
Su Mu believed it. She believed that Rong Shen could do such a thing to Jiang Bei, so she nodded. Seeing her nod, Jiang Bei smiled faintly:
"I actually wanted to leave yesterday, but leaving Rong Shen’s territory isn’t so simple. After struggling all night, I still couldn’t leave, though he promised to send me away by noon today. It’s just after learning you were coming, I decided to stay a bit longer."
Su Mu looked at Jiang Bei:
"What do you think Rong Shen will do?"
"Do you mean if he will take revenge for me?"
"I don’t think Rong Shen is completely indifferent to you now. I even feel his affection for you is greater than before," Su Mu said to Jiang Bei. "That time we met at the restaurant, I could tell, but you didn’t want to talk about it then and I didn’t mention it. Besides, you and Ji Nanfeng displayed such love in front of me, I truly thought you were going to be together forever and Rong Shen had no chance, but now..."
"He still has no chance."
Jiang Bei stood up from the stone bench, her emotions changing, partly defensive and partly agitated. Su Mu watched her, saying nothing.
"What’s between Ji Nanfeng and me has nothing to do with Rong Shen. I have no relationship with him either. More than a year ago, everything between him and me was completely finished."
Su Mu watched Jiang Bei silently, not saying that things wouldn’t be as simple as Jiang Bei thought, as her current mood didn’t permit, but she could sense that Rong Shen wouldn’t let this go, as she herself was going through a similar situation.
For the other party, what was already a thing of the past, about someone completely unrelated, they might not think the same.
——
Fu Shinian and Rong Shen sat opposite each other on the living room sofa, smoking cigarettes while Animal World played on the TV. Fu Shinian glanced at it and smiled faintly:
"Jiang Bei didn’t come here of her own free will, did she?"
"She never wanted to come here." Rong Shen looked at Fu Shinian. "Su Mu doesn’t want to be with you either, right? I can see her aversion to you."
Fu Shinian chuckled softly:
"If I’m not mistaken, you are mocking me now, aren’t you?"
"That’s not my intention."
Despite saying so, Rong Shen’s facial expression betrayed him, although he didn’t dwell on it and just snorted lightly:
"What do you want to do to Jiang Bei? From what I know of Ji Nanfeng, he won’t divorce her."
"You think this issue depends on him?"
Fu Shinian looked at Rong Shen, silent for a few seconds before chuckling softly: "I don’t think Jiang Bei will divorce either."
"Not divorcing just means it hasn’t reached that point yet. Once it touches what they care about most, how long do you think they can hold out?" Rong Shen looked at Fu Shinian. "I also believe Su Mu won’t go back to you, yet aren’t you still clinging to her like a plaster? Let’s not mock each other. We’re both the same."
After saying this, Rong Shen seemed to remember something:
"I guess there’s going to be a showdown between me and Ji Nanfeng, you’d best stay out of it."
Fu Shinian nodded understandingly:
"I won’t interfere, do as you wish."
"That’s good, so I don’t have to fall out with anyone when the time comes."
Jiang Bei and Su Mu entered just in time to hear the men’s conversation. Su Mu didn’t know what to say, but Jiang Bei couldn’t hold back and looked directly at Rong Shen:
"Aren’t you overstepping?"
Without moving, Rong Shen looked at Jiang Bei standing in the doorway and smiled faintly:
"That was quick. I thought you’d talk longer—I even considered the menu for dinner."
"When I decided to leave, I never thought of looking back, and with what’s happened between us, there’s no turning back. You shouldn’t waste your time on me. Whatever happens between Ji Nanfeng and me, it’s none of your business. You’d better behave yourself."
Rising from the couch, Rong Shen instilled a sudden fear in Su Mu. Subconsciously, she moved in front of Jiang Bei, protecting her like a hen with her chick, which caused Fu Shinian to frown slightly. Although Rong Shen wouldn’t do anything to Jiang Bei, Su Mu’s protective gesture didn’t sit well with him.
"Of course, what happened between you and Ji Nanfeng is none of my business, but he bullied a woman who once belonged to me, and that’s a debt I intend to settle no matter what."
"Heh." Jiang Bei chuckled. "You said it yourself, it was in the past. Since it’s in the past, why take it seriously? What, do you want everyone to think you’re some sort of romantic? Rong Shen, we know each other too well, so there’s no need for pretenses. What you want, you can’t possibly get."
Rong Shen’s gaze slowly fell on Jiang Bei’s belly, and he smiled:
"Can’t I raise the child?"
"In your dreams!"
Rong Shen, unbothered, raised an eyebrow and slowly sat back down:
"Jiang Bei, you say we know each other too well, so you should also be very clear that once I decide to do something, you probably can’t pull me back. I didn’t know what your life was like before, but now that I do, I can’t pretend I don’t. You can remain unmarried, continue to be Mrs. Ji, I won’t force you, but wouldn’t you like to guess when, precisely, you’ll become a widow?"
"Rong Shen!" Jiang Bei glared at him furiously: "You don’t need to use that to scare me. What do you think I have to fear now? If you want to kill, then kill. Or do you think if Ji Nanfeng dies, I would hurl myself back into your arms? Without Ji Nanfeng, there’s still Ji Dongfeng, Ji Xifeng—who do you think you are?"
