Chapter 408: If It Matters, It Wouldn’t Have Started
Chapter 408: Chapter 408: If It Matters, It Wouldn’t Have Started
Rong Shen didn’t immediately respond to Jiang Bei’s words. Instead, he leisurely lit a cigarette, exhaling smoke as he slowly smiled:
"You can find as many men as you want, I’m not scared. Whoever dares to marry you, I dare to chop him to pieces!"
He spoke with an air of nonchalance as though he were commenting on the day’s weather, but Jiang Bei knew he was serious. He really would dare to do such a thing. After all, there was nothing in this world he wouldn’t dare to do—what he had done to her before, was any of it legal?
She gave a slight smile, too lazy to argue further, and simply said calmly:
"If you want me back by your side, there is a way—bring my body back."
"Xiaobei." Su Mu anxiously tugged at her hand: "What are you saying?"
Jiang Bei chuckled and looked at Rong Shen:
"Rather than staying with the man who killed my father, I might as well be dead."
Rong Shen watched Jiang Bei without speaking, while Fu Shinian and Su Mu beside him were stunned. They had always been unaware of the specific reason the two had broken up, but now it seemed it was this matter. However, Su Mu couldn’t understand—weren’t Uncle Jiang’s death an accident in a car crash? How could it be related to Rong Shen?
Yet looking at Rong Shen’s expression, it seemed he had completely taken responsibility for it.
Jiang Bei’s emotions were becoming increasingly agitated, and Su Mu, worried about her physical condition, urged:
"Xiaobei, let’s leave for now."
Jiang Bei nodded and walked out with Su Mu. Seeing this, Fu Shinian also stood up but didn’t leave immediately. Instead, he stared at the still-seated Rong Shen in disbelief:
"Is what she said true?"
Rong Shen curved his lips into a smile:
"More or less."
Jiang Bei had been brought here by Rong Shen, so naturally, she didn’t have a car. Su Mu had also been brought by Fu Shinian, so if the two of them wanted to leave, they could only take Fu Shinian’s car.
As Fu Shinian approached, he didn’t say much, just his gaze lingered on Jiang Bei for a few seconds before he opened the car door and got in first.
The ride was very quiet. Su Mu held Jiang Bei’s hand, unsure what to say. Since leaving Rong Shen’s place, Jiang Bei seemed to be in much better spirits, but nobody knew if she was just pretending or if she truly no longer cared.
Fu Shinian thought Jiang Bei was going to Su Mu’s apartment, but at the first crossroad upon entering the city area, Jiang Bei spoke in a cold voice:
"Please take me home, to Ji Nanfeng’s place."
Fu Shinian glanced at Jiang Bei through the rearview mirror without a word, knowing someone else would ask. The next second, Su Mu spoke:
"What are you going back there for?"
Jiang Bei responded with a smile:
"That’s my home, of course, I should go back. Even if we’re divorcing, I have to make things clear in front of Ji Nanfeng. It’s impossible not to see each other. Besides, I don’t want to escalate matters; some things are better explained sooner rather than later."
Su Mu wanted to say more, but Fu Shinian cut her off:
"I agree with Jiang Bei’s point of view."
Su Mu looked at him. Fu Shinian’s gaze met Su Mu’s in the rearview mirror, and he smiled slightly: "Whether it’s to reconcile or break up, avoidance won’t solve any issues, right? Do I have a point?"
"Before, I always thought Fu Shinian was cold and annoying; I never found him pleasant. But what he just said, I actually agree with," Jiang Bei said, looking at the passing scenery with a gentle smile. "Susu, one really can’t avoid things. The more you avoid, the more complicated it gets, and the less happy we become."
Su Mu understood this truth as well—yet how many could truly act on it?
She didn’t ask Jiang Bei her intentions, but her instincts told her that Jiang Bei wouldn’t divorce Ji Nanfeng. After all, from the beginning, she had prepared herself for Ji Nanfeng’s infidelity and she knew all about the other woman he had outside. If Jiang Bei had cared about that, she wouldn’t have started things in the first place—why wait until now?
Yet fate really knows how to play tricks. Su Mu remembered Jiang Bei once saying that she would never compromise in marriage, that she would rather remain single for life than marry someone she didn’t love. But now look at her, having given up on love, settling for marriage, completely changing her ways.
No one knew what had caused her to become like this, other than herself.
After dropping Jiang Bei off at Ji Nanfeng’s villa, Jiang Bei did not ask Su Mu to come in, yet Su Mu was quite worried:
"Do you really not need me to stay with you?"
Jiang Bei gave a small smile:
"What would you stay for? Ji Nanfeng and I will have a good talk, calmly. Even if we can’t stay calm and end up fighting, he’s hardly my match. And when you’re here, not only can’t I fully commit to the fight, but I’ll also be distracted worrying about you."
Su Mu laughed, understanding Jiang Bei’s determination. As she was about to turn around and get into the car, the door of the villa was suddenly opened. Ji Nanfeng stepped out of the house and stood at the entrance, watching everything from afar. The next moment, Fu Shinian got out of the car, walked around the vehicle to Su Mu and Jiang Bei, who were talking, and headed straight toward Ji Nanfeng.
No one knew what Fu Shinian and Ji Nanfeng talked about, but their conversation was very brief. It lasted no more than a minute before he returned to the side of the car and looked at Su Mu:
"Let’s go."
Jiang Bei also patted Su Mu’s shoulder:
"Go on, I’ll ask you out shopping some other day."
"If there’s anything, call me, and don’t turn off your phone again."
Jiang Bei smiled:
"Alright, I’ll remember."
Although not reassured, Su Mu couldn’t stay any longer. She kept looking back as she got into the car, watching Jiang Bei step by step walking toward Ji Nanfeng until the two of them disappeared from sight. Her concern was evident, so much so that Fu Shinian eventually couldn’t help but speak:
"Even if you had followed Jiang Bei inside, what could you have done for her? Marriage, after all, is a matter of two people; you can’t help."
"Even if I can’t help, I don’t want her to face this alone."
Fu Shinian glanced at Su Mu but said nothing more.
As the time neared four o’clock, Su Mu didn’t want to delay any longer. If she waited much longer to pick up Qiqi, they’d likely have to dine together, a scenario she didn’t want to face. However, Fu Shinian seemed to disregard Su Mu’s wish to return to Bishui Yuntian, simply smiling:
"Didn’t you say earlier you didn’t want to go back? How has your mind changed already?"
"Why I didn’t want to go back before, you understand better than I do, and why I’m in a hurry to go back now, you should also understand."
Fu Shinian smiled slightly:
"I understand, but do you think I’d waste this hard-won opportunity to be alone with you?"
Su Mu furrowed her brows but didn’t get angry as she typically might. She slowly cast her gaze to the fleeting scenery outside the window, her voice so soft that if one didn’t listen carefully, it might not be heard:
"Fu Shinian, how many times do you need me to tell you before you understand?"
