Chapter 406: Chapter 406: Had a Premonition, Why the Surprise
After a simple lunch, Qiqi was feeling sleepy. Having woken up early and then sat in the car for hours, she was undeniably tired. Su Mu had intended to send Qiqi to the Wen Family for care, but Qiqi didn’t want to leave. She looked at Su Mu with a pitiful gaze,
"Wood, can’t I stay and sleep with Great Grandmother? You can come to pick me up in the evening, can’t you?"
Before Su Mu could say anything, the old lady spoke up,
"Susu, if you trust me to look after Qiqi, leave her here. I promise to take good care of her."
With the old lady insisting, what else could Su Mu say? She smiled slightly, "Great Grandmother, what are you saying? I just think that Qiqi is a bit naughty and might disturb your rest and peace."
"What peace? At my age, the last thing I want is to be alone. I used to dream about having a great-grandchild. Now that my wish has finally come true, I’d rather spend all my time playing with Qiqi. Having her here actually makes me happy."
"Since that’s the case, I’ll leave Qiqi here and come to get her in the evening."
Fu Shinian and Su Mu left the house together, but once they were out of the old lady’s sight, Su Mu’s expression completely changed. Fu Shinian naturally knew why and smiled faintly,
"If you’re unhappy, you can still take Qiqi with you now."
Su Mu coldly stared at Fu Shinian,
"This was all planned by you, wasn’t it? I don’t know why Qiqi is standing on your side now, nor do I understand how you convinced her to willingly become your undercover agent, even cooperating with your act. But you should be clear, Fu Shinian, no matter how Qiqi helps you, I won’t get back together with you."
Fu Shinian ignored Su Mu’s coldness and smiled gently,
"It’s getting late. Let’s go see Jiang Bei."
After saying this, he opened the passenger door for Su Mu, but she didn’t appreciate the gesture and instead opened the rear car door. Seeing this, Fu Shinian simply smiled and said nothing. He closed the door, walked around the car, got into the driver’s seat, and drove off.
What Su Mu had not expected was that Rong Shen’s residence was not far from Gui Ning Residence, similarly nestled against a mountain and by water, also self-built. Although it wasn’t as sprawling as Gui Ning Residence, it was exquisitely crafted, making one feel the landscape was unique.
Fu Shinian drove, glancing at Su Mu in the rearview mirror,
"Do you like it here?"
Su Mu ignored him, just as she had done the whole trip. No matter what Fu Shinian said, Su Mu never replied, acting as if he didn’t exist, or perhaps she really did just consider him a driver.
When the car stopped in front of the main building, Su Mu immediately saw Rong Shen standing under the corridor. She pushed the car door open, got out, and without waiting for Fu Shinian, walked directly towards Rong Shen,
"Where is Xiaobei?"
Rong Shen smiled, but before he could say anything, Jiang Bei’s voice came from behind: "Susu."
Su Mu turned around and saw Jiang Bei in a white dress, pausing for a moment. It seemed like the first time Su Mu saw Jiang Bei in a dress, but she didn’t have time to dwell on it. She quickly walked over and examined Jiang Bei from head to toe,
"How are you?"
Seeing this, Rong Shen couldn’t help but chuckle,
"Su Mu, you don’t think I brought Jiang Bei here to mistreat her, do you?"
Su Mu ignored Rong Shen’s comment, focusing solely on Jiang Bei. This eased Fu Shinian’s heart a little, seeing that her disregard wasn’t solely for him.
Because both Rong Shen and Fu Shinian were present, Su Mu and Jiang Bei didn’t talk openly about everything. Fortunately, the two men seemed to understand their concerns. Rong Shen said directly,
"There’s a small pond behind this garden. Even in this weather, it won’t feel too hot to walk there. If you feel it’s inconvenient to talk here, you can go there for a walk."
He then went inside, and Fu Shinian followed, leaving the outside space to them.
Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu and smiled slightly. The two women, in tacit understanding, began walking towards the back of the main building.
The vegetation in the yard was lush, so even at this time, it didn’t feel very hot. The occasional breeze was refreshing. Su Mu, concerned about Jiang Bei’s health, didn’t walk too fast, and Jiang Bei, though not feeling frail, matched Su Mu’s pace.
Su Mu didn’t know how to start the conversation, aware that by the time she knew the details, things had already deteriorated. She didn’t know what to say to make Jiang Bei feel better. But Jiang Bei didn’t let Su Mu hesitate for long and started speaking after a brief silence,
"I know you must have many questions for me and a lot that you don’t understand."
"Yes." Su Mu didn’t deny it. "But I don’t know what to ask. Things I didn’t know before, I know now. So, the finer details seem unimportant. The more I think about it, the only things I really care about are your feelings and your future plans."
Jiang Bei slightly smiled,
"My feelings? Do you think I’m in a bad mood?"
Truth be told, from appearances alone, no one could say Jiang Bei was in a bad mood. Her complexion was rosy, a smile on her lips. One might think she had encountered some happy event, but only Su Mu knew that the woman before her was good at disguising, hiding all her emotions under a veneer of perfection.
"Susu, I’m not in a bad mood. I turned my phone off and didn’t contact anyone because I didn’t know what to say. I’m not heartbroken, nor am I upset. Regarding the things that were exposed yesterday, I feel no surprise, as I’ve known about them for a long time. Who would be surprised by something they knew about all along? The only thing I haven’t figured out is how to explain everything to you and our other good friends."
Jiang Bei paused for a few seconds before continuing, her lips curling into a smile that clearly seemed forced,
"I insisted on getting married from the start. Whether it was you, Wei Shaoqin, or my brother, you all tried to talk me out of it. I knew Ji Nanfeng’s ways, that he might not stay faithful after marriage. I was prepared for all this; it’s nothing to be heartbroken about."
"You guessed that this would happen?"
Jiang Bei nodded,
"Yes. How could you expect to tether a wild horse used to running on the plains with just a rein? Even if you can tie him down physically, his heart isn’t yours. Why waste that emotion?"
"Then why did you get married?"
"Because we could be unrelated."
