Chapter 386: Chapter 386: Accustomed to Oneself, Therefore Unspoken
Su Mu didn’t think Fu Shinian was just talking nonsense, nor did she believe that Jiang Bei wouldn’t argue with Fu Shinian’s words. Her distraction and serenity must be because something unknown to her had happened. She was supposed to ask clearly after Fu left, but Qiqi had fallen asleep again, so she had to delay it.
Seeing the obvious astonishment on Jiang Bei’s face, Su Mu knew something must have happened. Since Fu Shinian also knew about it, it had to be related to Ji Nanfeng. She slightly furrowed her brows:
"Is it related to Ji Nanfeng?"
Jiang Bei shook her head slightly:
"Don’t think too much; I’m really okay. I’ve just been tired lately because of the amount of work. You just need to take good care of Qiqi now."
"Xiaobei, have you ever considered me your friend?"
Su Mu’s words made Jiang Bei furrow her brows slightly, and her face was immediately filled with dissatisfaction:
"Su Mu, you have to speak with conscience. When have I not regarded you as a friend? Whenever you encountered something, wasn’t I the first to rush to your aid? I care more about your issues than my own. Now you’re saying that I don’t consider you a friend, do you really think I have nothing better to do than to meddle in your affairs?"
Jiang Bei’s words were somewhat unkind, but Su Mu showed no sign of anger. Looking at the somewhat out-of-control Jiang Bei, she spoke softly:
"We’ve been friends for so many years. Whatever happens to me, I tell you, asking for your help and advice. But what about you? Whether it’s a big issue or a trivial matter, I’m always the last to know. I was the last to find out about your relationship with Rong Shen, your breakup with him, and your marriage to Ji Nanfeng. I know you think I have so many troubles of my own, and you don’t want to bother me, but Xiaobei, this feeling that you’re the only one sacrificing for me is really awful. I really hope that one day you can talk to me about your problems, to let me help you too."
After Su Mu finished speaking, Jiang Bei remained silent for a long time, but it was clear that her emotions had eased and gradually calmed. She wasn’t a person used to losing her temper, but her emotions seemed to be getting more and more uncontrollable since she became pregnant. Since Su Mu had been pregnant before, she initially thought it was normal, but now it seemed that along with the hormone secretion, her heart must be burdened with many unknown troubles.
Today, she spoke out to encourage Xiaobei to confide in her and let her share some of her burdens, but the result wasn’t as Su Mu had hoped.
After a long silence, Jiang Bei still chose not to speak, managing a somewhat forced smile:
"Susu, you know me. It’s not just because of you that I don’t talk. It’s just my nature. I’ve gotten used to handling everything myself over the years. It’s not that I don’t see you as a friend or consider you an outsider; I’m just really not used to it. Give me some time, at least let me prepare myself before I speak, okay?"
The more Jiang Bei reacted like this, the more Su Mu worried. She had a feeling that something very serious must have happened to her. She had her own guesses, but until Jiang Bei spoke out or she accidentally discovered it herself, guessing could only be guessing.
"Okay, but I hope it won’t be too long. I’m really worried about you."
Jiang Bei smiled:
"Okay."
Jiang Bei didn’t stay in the ward for long before her phone rang; seeing it was a call from her department, she stood up from the sofa:
"There’s something in the department; I’ll go first, then come back after work to see Qiqi."
"Go and get busy; take care of yourself."
"Okay."
After Jiang Bei left the ward, she let out a deep breath and walked towards the elevator. This was a doctors-only elevator, and Jiang Bei thought it would be empty, yet the door opened at the seventh floor, and there stood Qiao Yu, to her surprise.
Qiao Yu was also surprised to see Jiang Bei, pausing for a moment:
"Did you visit Qiqi?"
Jiang Bei gave a slight nod but didn’t say anything else. Qiao Yu stood outside the elevator without intending to join her. After a few seconds of silence, Jiang Bei spoke:
"Are you coming in? I have something to deal with in my department, and I need to go down one more floor."
That’s when Qiao Yu stepped into the elevator.
The elevator doors slowly closed, leaving only Jiang Bei and Qiao Yu together, each occupying a corner. Jiang Bei made no move to speak, but Qiao Yu’s gaze stayed on her face, wanting to say something a few times, only to be held back by Jiang Bei’s expression.
She surely did not want to hear those words.
Yet, Qiao Yu couldn’t ignore her weariness.
As the elevator descended to the second floor, Qiao Yu finally spoke:
"Are you... doing okay?"
Jiang Bei acted as if she didn’t hear, showing no reaction, and the elevator reached the first floor at that moment. Just when Qiao Yu thought he wouldn’t get an answer, Jiang Bei straightened up and spoke slowly:
"Qiao Yu, this is really meaningless. I asked you if you wanted to marry me before I got together with Ji Nanfeng, and you refused. Since you refused, stop pretending to care so much about me. It feels fake."
Qiao Yu wanted to say something, but the elevator doors opened at that moment, and the next second, Jiang Bei stepped out and left.
Wen Han arrived at the hospital close to dusk, accompanying Zhou Yaxian and Wen Shaoyuan. By that time, Qiqi was awake, playing a small game with Su Mu. Seeing Wen Han and Zhou Yaxian, her face broke into a smile, and she sweetly greeted, ’Grandma Zhou, Uncle Wen.’
Wen Shaoyuan quickly walked over to stand in front of Qiqi, taking her hand silently yet filled with evident concern that anyone could feel.
Zhou Yaxian said a few words of comfort to Qiqi, then her gaze fell on Su Mu, unable to help but glare at Wen Han:
"Look at what you’ve done. Both Su Mu and you didn’t sleep all night, yet you went home and slept the whole day. What kind of boyfriend does that? Any man would let his woman rest first. Look at Susu, her face is pale and she has dark circles under her eyes."
Wen Han smiled faintly:
"It’s my fault."
Su Mu hurriedly explained:
"Auntie, you’re mistaken. It’s just that Wen Han was completely soaked because of me and Qiqi, and it was at my insistence that he went back to change clothes. Also, it was me who asked him to rest before coming back. He was not long out of the hospital and isn’t in great health, so I was really afraid he would collapse again."
Zhou Yaxian laughed:
"Look at how well Susu speaks. She even makes excuses for your inconsiderate actions."
Wen Han laughed softly:
"Yes, I will pay more attention in the future and not let Susu suffer any discomfort."
Whether it was just her thinking too much or being overly sensitive, Su Mu couldn’t shake the feeling that the smile on Wen Han’s face wasn’t reaching his eyes.
