Chapter 379: Chapter 379: Things Have Changed, But Friendship Remains

The old lady sighed upon hearing those words:

"I know it’s pointless even to ask, as the answers you’ll give me are sure to be ones that comfort me. But I can’t help worrying, and my heart aches. Just thinking about what you might have gone through these past three years, my heart feels like it’s tearing apart. It was Shinian’s foolishness. He used such a disgraceful method to drive you away, leaving you to fend for yourself while pregnant, and not caring about you and your daughter for a full three years. Not to mention your forgiveness, I myself still detest him to the point where my teeth itch."

Su Mu smiled faintly, unsure of how to continue the conversation.

The old lady looked at her:

"But Susu, although Shinian’s actions were excessive, there was a reason for them after all. If it weren’t for his inhumane mother, you and Shinian might not have separated; or perhaps, if I had died a few years earlier, things between you two also..."

"Grandma, please don’t say such things."

Su Mu’s words gave the old lady a sense of feeling, and she looked at Su Mu:

"Do you know what happened back then?"

Su Mu remained silent for a few seconds and then nodded faintly:

"Before you came, Qiao Yu visited Qiqi. He told me almost everything that happened three years ago, so I know."

"Debt of karma," sighed the old lady heavily. "Who could imagine there would be such an inhuman mother in this world? Not only did she not bring up her own son but actually wished for his family’s ruin, to die without a place to be buried. Shinian’s life has also been tough."

Su Mu looked down and pursed her lips:

"I know."

"I’m not saying this to coax you into forgiving him. What he did was wrong, even if there were reasons for it. You mustn’t feel burdened by it."

Su Mu shook her head gently:

"I won’t, Grandma."

"After your divorce from Shinian, I’ve also been in a daze for many years, with no care for you. Even if you, considering my feelings, chose not to tell me, I could still guess what kind of hardships you’ve endured these years. Susu, I don’t mean anything else, and I won’t make unreasonable demands of you to forgive Shinian or even get back together with him. I just hope to see you and Qiqi from time to time, to make up for what I owe you and your daughter."

The old lady’s words relaxed Su Mu a lot, and she smiled gently:

"Grandma, you’re being too serious. No matter what happened between Fu Shinian and me, you have always been my grandmother. The love and care you showed me, I’ve always held dear in my heart. Since the first day I was married into the Fu family, you’ve cherished me just like your own granddaughter. If there’s any guilt, it should be I who apologize to you."

Su Mu looked at the old lady:

"Since the divorce, I’ve never actively visited you at the Fu family. I knew your health wasn’t good before I left, but at that time, I couldn’t care too much. Hence, for three years, I haven’t cared for you, failing the duty of a younger generation and betraying the love you’ve showered upon me for so many years."

"The way you put it..." The old lady looked at Su Mu affectionately: "We’re both women; though we lived in different times, I believe that in some ways, feelings are the same. You’ve divorced Shinian, and he, like a fool, drove you away in such a manner. If under those circumstances you could still care for and attend to me, that would be the work of a saint."

"Now, just hearing you call me ’Grandma’ and sitting beside me for a chat, not associating that fool’s actions with this old woman, I’m already very grateful. How could I blame you?" The old lady patted her hand. "Don’t overthink things. Even if you’ve divorced Shinian, in my eyes, you are still my granddaughter. When I pass, half of my inheritance will go to you."

"Grandma..."

"You needn’t persuade me, nor should you find my words inauspicious. Everyone dies, and especially after these past few years, I’ve come to see clearly. Life and death are not the most important. I’ve not lived my life in vain; I was cherished by your grandfather, received filial piety from Shinian’s father, had the affection of my grandchildren, and had you as a granddaughter-in-law. No matter where I go, I’m fortunate."

Su Mu wanted to say something but the old lady stopped her and smiled:

"Susu, I don’t expect you to reconcile with Shinian. Whether it was three years ago or during your two years of marriage, he made you suffer a lot. Though he is my grandson, I must be fair. What a woman seeks is simply someone she likes and who likes her back, who can understand each other and support one another. Shinian didn’t do well and doesn’t deserve forgiveness. I just hope you can live in peace and happiness from now on."

Su Mu nodded with a smile:

"I will, Grandma. Don’t worry."

"I’ve heard that you’re with the Wen Family’s kid?"

Su Mu didn’t expect the old lady to know about this news. It seemed as if her relationship with Wen Han had become widely known in an instant. But at that moment, she had no intention of concealing it and nodded:

"He’s been with me for three years, taking care of mother and daughter, being very good to me, and considerate. Being with him, I feel very secure, a sense of solidity I’ve never had before."

"That’s good," the old lady reached out and touched Su Mu’s face. "Ultimately, it’s Shinian who’s unlucky, having missed out on you."

While the old lady and Su Mu chatted in the small garden, Qiqi in the sickroom slowly opened her eyes. She expected to see Su Mu upon waking but was surprised to find herself face to face with someone she longed to see, yet felt she shouldn’t. It made her wonder if she was still dreaming, so she blinked several times.

Fu Shinian noticed Qiqi’s eyes open immediately since his gaze had never left her. Finding her incredulous look adorable, he kept quiet so as not to disturb her until she was sure she wasn’t dreaming. Then he spoke softly:

"Why are you here?"

She didn’t know how to address the man before her. She knew he was her father, but it seemed Su Mu didn’t like him. If she got too close to him, she wondered if Su Mu would feel hurt. Qiqi cared about Su Mu’s feelings, so she decided to ignore formalities.

Fu Shinian didn’t mind and smiled slightly:

"I heard you were sick, so I came to see you."

"How did you know I was sick?"

Fu Shinian gently held her small hand:

"Do you remember the Uncle Qiao you met at the hospital last time?"

Qiqi thought for a moment and nodded:

"I remember, a very handsome uncle."

"Yes, that’s him. He told me you were ill and staying here, so I came."
