Chapter 309: Chapter 309: I Cook, You Wash the Dishes
Wen Han was cutting vegetables while he glanced at Su Mu and smiled slightly:
"You’re overthinking it, Qiqi wouldn’t possibly be mad at you."
Su Mu just took it as comfort and smiled faintly without saying anything. Seeing this, Wen Han spoke softly, "Don’t believe me?"
Su Mu certainly hoped that Qiqi wasn’t mad at her, but the rejection and resistance she had shown just now weren’t fake. She even didn’t want Su Mu to touch her. Qiqi had been sensible from the start, so much so that Su Mu would often forget that she was actually still a child.
"She just doesn’t know how to face you."
"Hmm?" Su Mu, who was lost in thought, didn’t catch what Wen Han had said clearly: "What did you say?"
"I said, Qiqi doesn’t know how to face you." Wen Han took some ribs out of the fridge and asked Su Mu, "Braised in soy sauce or garlic sauce?"
Su Mu glanced at the ingredients in his hand:
"Either is fine."
Wen Han chuckled:
"Indeed, Qiqi is a child, but she is naturally precocious, so there are things she can feel but has never spoken about, like the issue of her father. I believe any child would eventually ask ’Where is my daddy?’, but think about it, has Qiqi ever asked you that question as she grew up?"
Su Mu shook her head.
"Do you think she has no concept of ’daddy’? That’s impossible. After all, her brother Shaoyuan has a father." Wen Han looked at Su Mu: "But why doesn’t she say anything? I think she has a vague understanding of her own family, one that is somewhat abnormal, so she keeps quiet, simply to avoid making you sad. However, something today hit her breaking point, causing her to release everything she’s never been able to say or show. I don’t think she is mad at you, but rather, she is worried that you will be mad at her because of her unusual behavior today and afraid that her actions have hurt you. That’s why she doesn’t know how to face you."
Su Mu listened quietly, feeling somewhat persuaded by Wen Han. Yet, at the same time, she wondered, ’How could Qiqi, who is so young, have such complex thoughts?’ But then again, she truly had never asked about her father.
Perhaps what Wen Han said was true.
"How do you understand so well?"
Wen Han smiled faintly:
"Because Shaoyuan also lives in a dysfunctional family, so I can understand some things better."
Su Mu looked at him, not saying a word.
"In fact, we often tend to interpret children’s thoughts with our adult minds, but in reality, they are far more mature than we imagine. They aren’t as ignorant as we think and have a vague conception of everything." Wen Han patted her shoulder: "This is the experience I’ve summed up over 8 years as a parent in an abnormal family. You might want to listen to it."
Su Mu smiled lightly:
"Thank you, I’ll reflect on it seriously."
"Mhm." Wen Han gently ruffled her hair: "You’re a well-behaved, good child."
After completing this sequence of gestures and speaking these words, Wen Han turned back to continue cooking, and because Su Mu was absorbed in thinking about Qiqi, she didn’t realize how intimate Wen Han’s actions had just been.
When the meal was finally on the table nearly an hour later, Su Mu helped Wen Han set out bowls and chopsticks, but her eyes kept wandering towards the direction of Qiqi’s room. Wen Han noticed this and chuckled:
"Let her sleep, she’ll come out if she wakes up,"
"Didn’t you say she’s embarrassed to face me?"
"Yes, but Qiqi also knows that you are her dearest mom, so she won’t ignore you."
This evening Su Mu couldn’t figure out why, but she felt an inexplicable unconditional trust in Wen Han, although she had trusted him before, it was never like tonight, even to the point of accepting his words without thinking.
After dinner, Su Mu tidied up the dishes, Wen Han wanted to help, but Su Mu stopped him:
"You are a guest in my home, it was already embarrassing to have you cook, if you had to do the dishes too, I would be too rude."
Wen Han could have insisted, since he had ways to make Su Mu relent in front of him, but he didn’t move. Suddenly, he quite enjoyed the ’I cook, you wash the dishes’ arrangement. It felt like a habit they had developed from living together day and night over the years, giving him a sense that it was just as it should be.
Wen Han sat in his original place, watching Su Mu busily going in and out, a smile always at his lips. He relished these moments and wished time could stand still right then and there.
The sound of Qiqi’s room door slowly opening ended Wen Han’s quiet appreciation of Su Mu. He saw Qiqi standing at the door barefoot. He got up from the sofa, walked over, and picked her up. Su Mu also noticed Qiqi, but when it came time to speak, she didn’t know what to say. Qiqi too looked at Su Mu, with a dazed, awkward gaze. Just like Wen Han had just described, she was not angry but embarrassed.
Seeing the awkward mother and daughter, Wen Han smiled slightly:
"You carry on, I’ll take Qiqi back to her room to put on shoes."
"Okay."
Wen Han carried Qiqi back to her room, but Qiqi clung to his neck, unwilling to let go. Wen Han had no choice but to sit cross-legged on the floor and gently pat her back, trying to soothe her uneasy mood. He didn’t speak, maintaining a quiet presence, until Qiqi whispered:
"Uncle Wen, is Su Mu mad at Qiqi?"
Wen Han chuckled, "Why would Qiqi think that? Su Mu is Qiqi’s mom, why would she be mad at Qiqi?"
There was a few seconds of silence from Qiqi before she let go of Wen Han’s neck, still in his arms, but looked up at him with a touch of insecurity:
"Uncle Wen isn’t lying to Qiqi?"
"Uncle Wen wouldn’t lie to Qiqi." Wen Han pinched his own nose, "They say if someone tells a lie, their nose will grow longer. Qiqi can see if Uncle Wen’s nose has gotten longer to know if I am telling the truth."
Soft little hands crawled up to Wen Han’s nose, gently pinched it, then she smiled slightly:
"It hasn’t grown longer, Uncle Wen is not lying."
Wen Han laughed and pinched her little cheek:
"Then can Qiqi tell Uncle Wen what happened today? Why did you suddenly need to go to the police station to find daddy?"
An expression of minor struggle appeared on Qiqi’s face, but after a few seconds, she seemed to come to terms with it and began telling Wen Han about what had happened today. It actually wasn’t a big deal...
Qiqi wouldn’t be old enough to go to kindergarten until the second half of the year, so she often played with the neighborhood kids near the studio. Over time, the other kids noticed they had never seen Qiqi’s dad and started asking her about it, to which Qiqi said she did have a dad.
She wasn’t lying—Wei Shaoqin was indeed her "Dad Wei," but Wei Shaoqin’s visits to Jiangcheng City were so infrequent, and even when he was there, it would only be at night, leaving in the daytime, so those little friends had never actually seen the so-called daddy of Qiqi.
