Chapter 308: Chapter 308: The Police Can’t Bring Dad Back

Wen Han discovered Su Mu and gave her a slight smile, but he did not say anything, as he was still busy patting Su Yimo’s back, softly coaxing her and hoping she would stop crying.

After calming herself down, Su Mu stepped forward, wanting to take Su Yimo from Wen Han’s arms, but the child clung tightly to Wen Han’s neck, not wanting to be held by her. Su Mu’s heart ached suddenly, experiencing this rejection from Su Yimo for the first time.

Wen Han looked at Su Mu’s slightly stunned face and comforted her,

"Perhaps Qiqi doesn’t want you to tire yourself, I can hold her."

Su Mu was not comforted, for she knew this was not the real reason behind Qiqi’s rejection.

A few seconds later, Su Mu softly spoke,

"You take Qiqi to the car first."

Wen Han nodded and left the police station first, while Su Mu sincerely thanked the police officers repeatedly.

Language can sometimes be rich, as it can be organized into many words to express, yet at other times it can be impoverished, as no matter how you express it, you cannot fully convey the emotions in your heart.

For instance, now, Su Mu wasn’t sure how to express her gratitude, only managing to bow deeply.

A policewoman helped her up and consoled,

"You don’t need to thank us, we really didn’t do much, the child came here by herself, just sitting here for a while."

Wen Han had not told Su Mu too much about why Su Yimo was at the police station. Now hearing that Su Yimo had come on her own, Su Mu couldn’t help but be curious,

"Came by herself? Did she say what it was about?"

"Yes, she had been outside alone for a long time. I brought her in because I was concerned for her safety. She asked me if this was where the ’police uncle’ lives, and if we could help find someone."

Su Mu grew even more puzzled, "Find someone?"

"Yes, she said that Wood had told her if she ever got lost, she should find a ’police uncle,’ so she came here. She said her dad has been lost for a long time and hoped that we could bring her dad back."

At that moment, Su Mu’s heart felt like it stopped beating.

She suddenly understood the reason for Su Yimo’s rejection.

At Su Yimo’s age, you could say she doesn’t understand much, yet sometimes what you think she doesn’t understand, she actually does—like the concept of a father. Su Mu never thought she lacked this concept. She also knew she would eventually have to confront this issue, but Su Yimo never mentioned it in front of her, and she herself had always been avoiding it, always thinking there’d be more time, another day when she might be ready to address it.

But the unexpected never waits for you to be fully prepared; it always appears suddenly, catching you off guard.

When Su Mu opened the car door, Su Yimo still hadn’t fallen asleep; she lay in Wen Han’s arms having stopped crying, her shoulders occasionally trembling slightly from the pain of the previous crying. Su Mu thought for a moment and chose not to sit beside her, instead taking the passenger seat, and then instructed the driver to start the car.

The car was very quiet, so quiet that only the occasional sobs of Su Yimo could be heard, and Su Mu’s heart shattered along with those sounds.

Upon reaching home, Su Mu opened the door and let Wen Han go in first; she gently closed the door behind her. By then, Su Yimo had fallen asleep in Wen Han’s arms. Wen Han smiled at Su Mu,

"I’ll take her back to her room first."

Su Mu nodded:

"I’ll go cook."

Her desolation was so evident that no one could overlook it, and although Wen Han didn’t know what exactly had happened to Su Yimo, judging from Su Mu’s state at the moment, he could guess a thing or two.

As Wen Han cautiously exited Su Yimo’s room, Su Mu was standing in the kitchen holding vegetables and staring blankly. Wen Han glanced at her and stepped forward, taking the vegetables from her hand:

"You go rest. You must have been scared by this afternoon’s events. I’ll cook."

Su Mu snapped back to reality and tried to take back the vegetables, as it wasn’t proper to let a guest cook in her own home, but Wen Han skillfully dodged her:

"When I’m around, it’s not your place to cook."

Su Mu knew that when Wen Han insisted on something, whatever she said was futile. Yet, she didn’t obediently go to rest; instead, she stood to the side and began to help. Wen Han no longer urged her away, but occasionally looked up at her while selecting vegetables.

"Are you angry with Qiqi?"

Su Mu was a bit stunned by the remark and immediately shook her head: "No."

"Your mood was clearly off after coming out of the police station. What did the police say to you?"

Su Mu’s movement in picking vegetables gradually halted, and she fell silent for a few seconds:

"I just asked what Qiqi did at the police station, and why she went there."

"Why?"

"She... she wanted to find dad."

Wen Han wasn’t surprised by Su Mu’s answer. He gently pushed her aside to access the sink and started washing the vegetables. Su Mu watched his expression:

"You’re not surprised?"

"Hmm, I’ve told you before, Qiqi has feelings about the issue with her father; she just didn’t ask you out of consideration for your feelings. Now, something has triggered her to finally burst out, which is to be expected, though it happened sooner than I thought."

Wen Han hadn’t rolled up his sleeves, which made washing vegetables inconvenient. When he thought to wipe his hands and roll them up, Su Mu noticed and came over to roll them up for him. Their skin inevitably touched, and Wen Han didn’t know how Su Mu felt, but he felt a surge of electricity shoot straight into his heart.

Their actions felt so natural, perhaps because they had gotten used to working together in the kitchen over the past two years, or maybe the movements were just subconscious and not overthought. Yet, Wen Han felt that everything at this moment was so worthwhile, and it was the moment he had been longing for, as if this was how they were supposed to interact and live together.

Their child was sleeping in the room while they, after a busy day, were making dinner in the kitchen, discussing the day’s trivial matters.

Such an atmosphere was endearing.

But even though he cherished it, he dared not show it. He feared scaring Su Mu, and he feared that she would become cautious in her words and actions because of his reaction. Perhaps this little warmth might never occur again. Therefore, he quickly composed himself and gave Su Mu a light smile:

"Thank you."

Su Mu also smiled faintly, not taking the incident to heart. She leaned against the nearby glass counter, watching the busy Wen Han, and softly said:

"I’m not angry with Qiqi, but I’m afraid she’s already angry with me."

Her rejection and resistance said it all.
