Chapter 286: Chapter 286 I Can’t Die Now
Fu Shinian had not been resting well these past few days. His grandmother’s situation and Su Mu’s affairs meant that even four hours of sleep a day was a luxury for him, but he had to handle everything as quickly as possible, leaving no flaws and minimizing regrets as much as possible.
When Qiao Yu entered, Fu Shinian was on the phone, occasionally coughing, which made Qiao Yu, his attending physician, frown slightly until he put down the phone. Then Qiao Yu couldn’t help but speak up:
"If you don’t start following medical advice, I suggest you transfer out of this hospital immediately. I’ve been practicing medicine for many years and have never seen a patient as disobedient as you. Your wound has split open several times and is now difficult to stitch, and there’s a risk of infection. Even if you don’t consider your own health, think about my reputation. Otherwise, people will think I am incompetent and just rely on my family’s connections."
Fu Shinian put the phone on the bedside table and smiled faintly, perhaps from the pain of his wound or perhaps because he had dealt with too many troubles and said too much today, so much so that his lips were pale without a trace of color, and his complexion was off, making him look utterly exhausted.
"Don’t worry, after Lawyer Zhang prepares the divorce agreement, I won’t have anything else to worry about."
"Don’t kid yourself." Qiao Yu didn’t believe him, stood by the bedside, and gently lifted his shirt to check. The bandage was soaked with fresh blood. He almost didn’t need to look to know that the wound had split open again. Suppressing the urge to punch him, he picked up the medical tray for treating wounds from the table:
"A few more times like this and there won’t be any need for treatment; just throwing you into the morgue would be better."
Fu Shinian lay there, quietly staring at the ceiling:
"I can’t die now."
"What difference does it make if you live or die at this point? The two people you care about most—one lies motionless there, and the other you had to drive away against your will," said Qiao Yu as he paused in his task. He looked at Fu Shinian. "What exactly are you thinking about Su Mu? Have you considered that by driving her away this way, it’s very likely she will never be yours again?"
Fu Shinian was silent for a few seconds, and only when Qiao Yu went back to treating his wound did he quietly say:
"It’s better that way. Being by my side, she just isn’t happy."
Qiao Yu looked up indifferently at him:
"You can really bear your child calling someone else ’dad’?"
Fu Shinian said nothing; he couldn’t bear it.
"Don’t congratulate yourself on these so-called good deeds for Su Mu. She doesn’t see it that way. I think even if one day Su Mu learns the truth, she might not forgive you. She would rather face all the coming dangers with you than be driven away by you like this."
"That’s why I can’t have her stay by my side," Fu Shinian said, looking out the window. "When she was kidnapped, she almost lost her life. If it’s inevitable that Su Mu and I part ways, then I prefer her to be alive rather than having to look at her cold, lifeless body, gone forever."
Qiao Yu sighed, too tired to argue:
"Decide for yourself then. No matter what I say, you won’t change your mind."
Qiao Yu finished treating the wound, although he knew it was probably futile. He gave a few more instructions before preparing to leave when Fu Shinian stopped him:
"How is the old lady?"
"Still the same. The rate of organ failure has slowed down, but it’s still progressing. My medical skills are limited; I can’t solve this problem."
"There will be a way."
Qiao Yu looked at Fu Shinian, ultimately unable to speak. He didn’t know whether to tell him the truth—if they couldn’t find the specific medication within a week, the old lady might really be gone forever. But perhaps there could be a miracle?
However, he believed that Fu Shinian had already prepared for the worst.
"Where’s Su Mu?" Fu Shinian asked, looking at Qiao Yu, "How are her health and the baby?"
"She was showing signs of a threatened miscarriage before, but she is much better now. As long as she rests well and keeps herself healthy in body and mind, there shouldn’t be any major issues."
"Mhm, that’s reassuring."
With a helpless sigh, Qiao Yu stepped out of the hospital room.
Su Mu hadn’t expected that she would sleep for such a long time after such a significant event, and without even dreaming. Undeniably, sleep was a way to quickly regain one’s strength. At least when she woke up, she was no longer as confused as before, and even though thinking about those things still caused a palpable pain, she had fully accepted and calmed down.
When she walked out of the bedroom, to her surprise, she found Rong Shen sitting in the living room. He was quietly sipping on red wine while wearing a robe, causing Su Mu to be startled; she had not anticipated seeing Rong Shen at this time, nor in such a manner.
Rong Shen glanced at her slightly:
"Awake?"
"Why are you here?"
"Is there a problem with me being at my woman’s house?"
Suddenly very concerned, Su Mu quickly walked towards Jiang Bei’s bedroom, "Xiaobei, how about?"
Gently pushing open the bedroom door, Su Mu saw Jiang Bei’s back facing her, his bare back full of marks. She was not a naive girl and naturally understood what those marks meant, which deteriorated her impression of Rong Shen. She had initially wanted to close the door and have a proper conversation with Rong Shen, but just then, Jiang Bei woke up, perhaps, he had never actually slept.
Clutching the blanket, she sat up on the bed. When she saw Su Mu at the door, there was neither surprise nor shame on her face:
"You’re awake?"
Su Mu opened her mouth to say something but seemed to find no appropriate words.
Rong Shen broke the silence, standing up from the couch, "I should be going."
Rong Shen went into the bedroom, and Su Mu, feeling it inappropriate to linger, returned to the living room. Shortly after, Jiang Bei came out and, seeing Su Mu sitting on the couch, smiled and walked towards the dining room:
"You shouldn’t drink with the pregnancy; shall I get you a glass of water?"
"No need, I’m not thirsty."
Jiang Bei still poured a glass of water for Su Mu but fetched a bottle of red wine and a stemmed glass for herself, looking at Su Mu with a self-mocking smile:
"Surprised?"
"I just didn’t expect Rong Shen to show up like this."
Jiang Bei smiled but said nothing, merely sipping her wine. Su Mu hadn’t expected, but Jiang Bei had; he was a man of his word. Concerned that Su Mu couldn’t visit his place, he had come without regard for anything or anyone else, putting Jiang Bei’s feelings aside to do what he wanted.
Rong Shen, now changed, walked out of the bedroom and waved to Jiang Bei sitting on the couch:
"I’ll take you to the airport tomorrow."
