Chapter 285: Chapter 285: Not Letting Go, Just Not Caring

Su Mu perhaps was in shock, for she hadn’t reached out to take Wen Han’s hand for a long time. Wen Han did not feel awkward; instead, he slowly drew back his hand, opened his arms, and looked at Su Mu with a gentle smile.

"Not shaking hands? Do you want to hug me instead? After all, I had always wanted to hug that little girl back then but never got the chance."

This time, Su Mu did not refuse; perhaps out of gratitude, or perhaps because she desperately needed a shoulder to lean on, or maybe she just wanted something to hide the tears that were about to spill from her eyes. Thus, she leaned into Wen Han’s embrace, allowing him to gently hold her.

Wei Shaoqin, having understood the entire story, found it theatrical and nearly unbelievable. Yet, the truth was right before his eyes, compelling him to believe. Fortunately, seeing Su Mu react, no longer as quiet as if non-existent, he felt grateful to Wen Han for that alone.

Yet, his heart still felt somewhat bitter.

When Jiang Bei arrived in a rush, what she saw was Su Mu crying uncontrollably in Wen Han’s arms. Completely unaware of what had happened, she looked towards Wei Shaoqin, who simply shook his head slightly, indicating that some things were not easily explained in a moment.

Jiang Bei did not press on with questions but stood quietly for a while until Wen Han gently released Su Mu before she spoke up:

"Are you done crying? If you’re done, let’s go find Fu Shinian right now. I refuse to believe that we can’t beat him up and have him hospitalized alongside the old lady—that’s my biggest wish today."

Upon hearing this, Wei Shaoqin immediately agreed:

"I agree, I’ve been wanting to beat him up for a while."

Wen Han stood up from the steps, lowered his gaze to look at Su Mu, then spoke softly:

"Violence won’t solve the problem. Let’s listen to what Su Mu decides on how to handle this."

"Listen to her?" Jiang Bei clearly disagreed, "Listening to her means enduring, pretending as though nothing has happened, and letting Fu Shinian off the hook. All these years, her mind and heart have been filled with Fu Shinian. She endured so much suffering without speaking out about it. This isn’t some minor issue that can be endured anymore. What does he think of Su Mu? A vessel for kidney transplantation? I don’t care if Su Mu can accept this outcome calmly. I can’t bear it; Su Mu is my friend, and I can’t just watch her being bullied like this."

Wei Shaoqin also wanted to say something, but seeing Su Mu’s expression, which seemed to disagree with Jiang Bei’s words, pressed back the words he was about to say.

It wasn’t that he thought Fu Shinian had any excuses worth acknowledging, but he believed that nothing was more important than Su Mu’s feelings at the moment. If letting Fu Shinian go could make Su Mu feel a bit better, he didn’t mind leaving right now. After all, there would be other days ahead, and some grievances could be settled later if not now.

Su Mu had remained silent all this while, and Jiang Bei could somewhat discern her intentions, frowning slightly:

"Are you really going to let him off?"

Su Mu shook her head:

"Not letting him off, but rather not caring. From now on, whatever he does is none of my concern. Xiaobei, you can go find him if you want. I won’t stop you, and I won’t say a good word for him because he’s not worth it. But what if he doesn’t pursue matters once you’ve gone? I’m worried something unexpected might happen while the divorce papers are still unsigned."

Jiang Bei frowned slightly:

"He still doesn’t want to divorce?"

Wei Shaoqin spoke up:

"It’s hard to say, especially since the old lady’s organs are all failing. If she needs another kidney..."

Before he could finish his sentence, Jiang Bei shot him a fierce glare, and Wei Shaoqin closed his mouth. Although his words were harsh, it was not impossible that they would come true, something Jiang Bei also considered. After a few seconds of silence, she nodded:

"Then I’ll temporarily let him off. Once your relationship with him is completely severed, I’ll come back to settle accounts with him."

As they were leaving the hospital, Wei Shaoqin immediately saw Rong Shen waiting next to the car. He glanced at Jiang Bei and asked quietly, "You’re not really together with him, are you?"

Jiang Bei furrowed her brows slightly. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to tell Wei Shaoqin the truth, but Wen Han was still by her side, and she knew he would definitely intervene if he found out—a scenario she did not want to see, especially since she didn’t think Wen Han’s intervention would make Rong Shen back down.

Receiving Jiang Bei’s glance, Wei Shaoqin obediently shut his mouth, but it was Wen Han walking on his other side who slowly spoke:

"Xiaobei, you owe me an explanation when you get back."

Jiang Bei instantly felt a headache coming on.

Jiang Bei had thought that with Wen Han present, Rong Shen would at least show some restraint. Unexpectedly, he showed no self-awareness whatsoever and greeted Wen Han and Wei Shaoqin without any hesitation. Although he didn’t ask Jiang Bei to leave in his car, he still drove all the way back to Jiang Bei’s apartment.

Downstairs at the apartment, Jiang Bei asked Su Mu and the others to go up first because she had something to say to Rong Shen. Wen Han watched her with concern:

"Come upstairs quickly."

"I know."

Once inside the apartment, Su Mu went to wash his face in the bathroom, while Wen Han and Wei Shaoqin settled on the couch. Five minutes passed and there was no sign of Su Mu coming out. Wei Shaoqin became restless, constantly looking in the direction of the bathroom, and he couldn’t help but ask Wen Han:

"There’s nothing wrong, is there?"

"No."

The certainty in his voice slightly surprised Wei Shaoqin:

"How can you be so sure?"

"For Su Mu, Fu Shinian is already history. It’s perfectly normal for her to take some time to sort out her emotions, isn’t it?"

After emerging from Wen Han’s embrace and wiping away her tears, Su Mu appeared to everyone else as a normal person, as if nothing had happened, except that she spoke less than usual. Yet, the more normal she appeared after such a significant event, the more abnormal it seemed.

When Jiang Bei came back, Su Mu also just walked out of the bathroom. Seeing her enter alone, Jiang Bei knew that Rong Shen had already left and thus said nothing.

When Su Mu opened the bathroom door, Wei Shaoqin instinctively stood up from the couch, his gaze meticulously scrutinizing her as if she had done something to harm herself inside. Su Mu just looked at him and felt very warmed.

The people who cared about her the most in this world were right in front of her. She had nothing to regret and nothing to lose.

Letting go of those who didn’t care about her and cherishing those who cared about her and whom she cared for was the greatest kindness she could offer herself.

"I’m fine." She smiled faintly.

Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu:

"If you’re tired, go rest first. We’ll call you when it’s time for dinner."

She really was tired, so she didn’t refuse. However, just as she was about to step toward the bedroom, she suddenly stopped and looked at Wen Han:

"Wen Han, thank you."

Whether it was 8 years ago or now, she owed him her gratitude.
