Chapter 277: Chapter 277 I thought I could do it

This sleep lasted a very long time for Su Mu, filled with many dreams, bizarre and unthinkable, no limits to her imagination, nothing was absent. She was finally startled awake by a zombie chasing her and when she sat up in bed, she realized it was late at night.

No one was in the hospital room, and it was only when she got up that she noticed a note on the bedside table. Jiang Bei’s handwriting:

——I had to leave for a bit, call me anytime.

Su Mu smiled faintly, carefully saving the note. It was the only bit of warmth she had received in these days.

After visiting the restroom, she had intended to go back to sleep, if not for herself, then for the baby’s sake. But perhaps because she had slept too much during the day, she was now so alert that she could remember things from a very long time ago in excruciating detail, as if looking through a magnifying glass.

She began to think, Fu Shinian was not a foolish man, he had let go of everything between her and Wen Han, which meant he believed that nothing had happened between them. Since he had believed back then, there was no possibility to overturn everything and start anew.

Maybe his saying so was for some other reason altogether.

Su Mu sat on the edge of the bed thinking for a very long time about the kindness he had shown her these days, the future he had told her about, and the baby in her belly.

She knew that with the slightest bit of self-respect, she shouldn’t seek out Fu Shinian again under these circumstances. She should leave and never look back. But Su Mu couldn’t do it. If not for herself, she had to try again for the baby in her belly.

At the very least, she wanted to die knowing the truth.

With this thought, Su Mu stood up from the bed as if gathering tremendous courage, and walked out of the ward.

At this hour, the hospital was eerily quiet, even the nurses’ station. Only the lights on the ceiling cast the hallways in brightness as if it were daylight.

Su Mu took the elevator to the top floor. The men in black were still on duty, although it was two different ones from before, not the ones Su Mu had met, but they still recognized her. However, at this hour, they didn’t know whether they should let her in.

Feeling their reluctance, Su Mu spoke softly,

"Can’t I go in?"

Before the men in black could respond, the door to the old lady’s room opened, and Fu Shinian, dressed in patient’s attire, walked out. He probably hadn’t expected to see Su Mu at this time either. There was a moment’s surprise, or perhaps it was the silence of the hour that made one feel the peacefulness of time, and so many facades were dropped. He looked at her, his tone normal, tinged with a hint of concern and worry, and said,

"Why aren’t you asleep yet?"

Because of this simple question, Su Mu smiled faintly. The men in black stepped aside to let Su Mu in. But seeing Su Mu standing in front of him again, looking at him with a gaze he was all too familiar with, Fu Shinian suddenly realized what he had just said.

He wanted to correct himself, but it was too late. Su Mu had clearly caught the implication in his words,

"You were lying to me before, weren’t you? You know this child is yours, don’t you?"

Fu Shinian chuckled at her words, his expression shifting back to that cold detachment that sent chills,

"Su Mu, have you been watching too many dramas? Thinking I have some unavoidable hardship, and you live in what kind of world? There aren’t so many hardships in this world, and even if there were, do you think there’s anything I can’t solve that I would need to drive you away from me?"

"Shinian..."

Fu Shinian interrupted her,

"Maybe you didn’t quite understand what I said before? If that’s the case, I don’t mind spelling it out for you, I don’t want you anymore... I find you dirty."

During the time when their relationship was strained, Fu Shinian had said similar things. Although those words had embarrassed Su Mu back then, they never made her feel as humiliated as she did now. What used to be normal conversation felt like her heart was being fried over and over in a pot of oil.

Maybe it was truly because she had tasted the sweetest sugar in the world and could no longer withstand even the slightest bitterness.

Two casually uttered words filled Su Mu with an erratic sensation, and she forced herself to stay upright, making one final struggle:

"I don’t know what kind of examination the doctor performed, nor do I understand her basis, but I believe not every doctor is that foolish to not even be clear about the most basic months. However, it doesn’t matter. If this hospital can’t provide the correct answer, I’ll go to another one. I’m not doing this to stay by your side, I just want to prove, to prove the innocence of my child."

Fu Shinian chuckled lightly:

"Does it matter?"

"Perhaps it doesn’t to you, but to me, it matters a great deal."

Even if she was to leave, she wanted to leave with her dignity intact.

Fu Shinian’s gaze shifted slowly to her still-flat abdomen upon hearing her words, then after a few seconds, he withdrew it indifferently and looked at Su Mu: "Suit yourself, I certainly don’t have the time to entertain you."

"If I bring the test results, will you still not believe them?"

"You have to be able to produce them first," Fu Shinian said with a cold sneer, "Don’t treat me like a naive child, handing me a fake test report."

"I won’t."

"Then that’s for the best."

Having said that, Fu Shinian clearly had no desire to continue the conversation. He stepped past Su Mu, but she called out to stop him:

"Fu Shinian."

He halted but did not turn around, waiting for her to speak.

"The things you once told me, were you lying to me?"

"No," he replied indifferently, "I thought I could manage it too."

But, things had not gone according to his wishes.

After answering, Su Mu thought he would walk away, but instead, he lingered on the spot for a few seconds until he delivered the next line, saying:

"I always thought you understood what I meant by having you stay in the general ward, but now you keep coming up here as if you don’t really get it. Do you need me to remind you? This is the Fu family’s private hospital area, and you no longer have the privilege to come up here."

Su Mu didn’t speak, nor did she make any move. Instead, Fu Shinian repeated his instructions to the men in black by the elevator:

"From now on, if she comes up here, do not let her through."

The men in black dared not say more and uniformly responded:

"Yes, Mr. Fu."

Su Mu smiled faintly but ultimately said nothing more and stepped away.

Fu Shinian watched her receding figure until she vanished from his sight before he slowly withdrew his gaze and walked towards the ward. The hand by his side had long been clenched into a fist from repression and endurance, his nails digging into the flesh.

Yet Su Mu had forgotten to ask him one question, why was he wearing a hospital gown?
