Chapter 278: Chapter 278: The Only Chance

Jiang Bei had not fallen asleep, tormented not only by physical soreness but also by a raging fury inside. She didn’t understand why she had ended up in such a predicament. Usually seen as a fierce and fearless woman in everyone’s eyes, in front of Rong Shen, she seemed to be nothing but a lamb to the slaughter.

Rong Shen had said he would pick her up at the hospital at 5 a.m., and Jiang Bei didn’t doubt him; he was a man of his word. She had thought about refusing and escaping, but this wasn’t Tokyo. As he had said, he wouldn’t mind going directly to her parents’ house to fetch her, so she had no choice but to obediently comply.

When people are suppressed for too long, sometimes they do things that defy logic.

Jiang Bei felt she had reached a breaking point, or else she wouldn’t have stealthily reached for the gun under Rong Shen’s pillow and aimed it at his head.

Her idea was simple: if Rong Shen were dead, she would be free, no longer manipulated like a puppet.

Sharing a bed under duress, she knew his habit of keeping a gun under his pillow. Initially, it had just been a thought, but today, she had acted on it, wanting Rong Shen dead to gain her freedom.

But, she was a doctor.

All her life, she had learned to save people, not to kill them more effectively.

In her hesitation, Rong Shen opened his eyes. His clear gaze told Jiang Bei that he had known what she had been up to all along. He had merely been feigning sleep to see if she really had the courage to do it.

Caught off guard by Rong Shen waking up, Jiang Bei was startled but quickly steadied her spirit, gripping the gun even tighter. Rong Shen watched her, propped himself up, and chuckled lightly,

"Fire the gun."

Jiang Bei looked at him, "Don’t push me."

"Don’t you want me dead? If I die, you won’t be forced to sleep with me. If I die, you won’t have to flee to Tokyo for further studies to avoid me. If I die, you won’t have to worry about your family being threatened. Once I’m dead, all these problems will be solved, won’t they?"

"Yes, if you are dead, everything is solved."

"Then shoot," he said without a trace of fear, his gaze laced with a clear challenge, "shoot and kill me."

Jiang Bei didn’t move, but her entire demeanor tensed up even more than before. She clutched the gun tightly, as if she might pull the trigger any second, but Rong Shen knew she never would.

A few seconds of silence later, Rong Shen got out of bed, wearing only boxers, a seemingly unimposing figure. Yet, each step he took towards Jiang Bei felt as if it were pressing right on her heart. She kept backing up until she had no space left and was cornered against a wall.

Yet Rong Shen did not let her off. Within reach, he grabbed the hand Jiang Bei held the gun with and fiercely pressed it against his chest. Jiang Bei was startled and instinctively tried to let go, but he held on firmly.

"Pull the trigger, and you’ll be free."

She looked up at him, her eyes filled with hate. She knew Rong Shen had seen right through her, realizing she truly didn’t have the courage to kill him.

"You’ve already got me, surely the novelty has worn off? Can’t you let me go?"

"Whether the novelty has worn off is not for you to decide." Rong Shen glanced down at the gun against his chest and smiled faintly, "Really not going to pull the trigger? Jiang Bei, I can give you this one chance, but I will absolutely not give you a second chance to point a gun at me again. Are you really going to give it up?"

"Why can’t you just let me go? I saved your life, yet you want me dead..."

Rong Shen looked at her:

"You still have a chance."

Jiang Bei showed signs of breakdown under his coercion; she felt her thoughts and will gradually no longer belonged to herself, and the taut string was at its limit. Yet, Rong Shen still felt it was not enough—he directly took action and pulled the trigger for Jiang Bei.

At that moment, Jiang Bei’s heartbeat stopped.

But ultimately, she was a doctor. She quickly came to her senses, tossed the gun aside, and checked his chest for wounds, but... there were none. There was no wound, no blood, not even a scratch on his chest; she suddenly understood.

The gun had never been off safety; from beginning to end, Rong Shen had been playing her.

Unable to restrain herself, she swung her hand to strike Rong Shen. He could have dodged, could have subdued her easily like every other time before. But he didn’t; he just stood there and took the slap, staring at Jiang Bei’s reddened eyes as he pinned her against the wall and leaned in to kiss her.

While Jiang Bei struggled, he bent down, picked her up, turned around, and threw her onto the large bed behind him. He looked down at her from above:

"Jiang Bei, I gave you a chance. If you had really shot me just now, I would not have bothered you for another second. It was you who gave up that chance."

Jiang Bei lay on the bed, motionless, somewhat indifferent to what he wanted to do to her next. She was utterly exhausted. She looked at the ceiling above and quietly spoke out:

"You didn’t tell me it wasn’t off safety."

"The result is the same," he replied.

After saying this, he climbed on top of her.

The room was filled with intimacy.

An hour later, it was all over. Jiang Bei felt like a dried fish left to roast in the sun, completely drained. But the moment it ended, she still immediately propped herself up, ready to head to the bathroom to clean up. Rong Shen watching her do this, slightly frowned:

"What are you trying to do now?"

"I want to leave here," Jiang Bei replied while dressing. "You’ve done all you wanted, right? It seems there’s no reason for me to stay."

Perhaps the evening’s events had tired Rong Shen as well; facing this Jiang Bei, he did not speak to stop her, only saying indifferently:

"As you wish."

Jiang Bei drove Rong Shen’s car away, not returning home, nor to her own apartment, but went straight to the hospital. Expecting Su Mu to still be asleep, she pushed open the door of the ward only to see Su Mu curled up on the hospital bed, lifeless.

She didn’t know what had happened, but could only rush over to sit by her side. Having just come in from outside, she was cold and dared not touch Su Mu carelessly, only able to ask worriedly:

"What’s the matter with you? When did you wake up? Why didn’t you call me?"

Su Mu looked at Jiang Bei and smiled weakly:

"I woke up a while ago; I’ve slept too long, now I can’t sleep."

"Did you go to see Fu Shinian?"

With Su Mu in such a state, Jiang Bei didn’t believe nothing had happened. In this world, it seemed only Fu Shinian could hurt Su Mu.
