Chapter 273: Chapter 273: The Most Foolish Belief

Su Mu’s heart had been uneasy these past few days. Fu Shinian’s absence had given her a vague premonition that something had happened. Initially, Qiao Yu still visited her, but gradually, even Qiao Yu stopped coming. Everyone seemed to be avoiding her as if she were a plague.

She had called Fu Shinian, but not once did he answer. She wanted to go out and find answers, but she was worried about the child in her womb experiencing some mishap.

Finally, a week later, Su Mu’s bleeding symptoms had subsided, and the doctor told her she could get out of bed for a bit, but she must remember not to be up for too long and not to overexert herself. Su Mu whispered her thanks and, after the doctor left, carefully stepped out of the hospital room.

Qiao Yu had mentioned that the elderly lady could not be discharged yet, which meant she could only stay in the Fu family’s private ward on the top floor. Su Mu took the elevator to the top floor; men in black guarded both sides of the elevator, but they did not stop her when she appeared.

Su Mu did not know which room her grandmother was in and asked,

"Which ward is Grandma in?"

The man standing on the right pointed to one of them, "The old madam has been placed in there, in the innermost ward."

Su Mu whispered her thanks and headed toward that ward.

She walked that distance cautiously, her heart not as calm as her appearance suggested. She hadn’t even decided how she should face Fu Shinian. Over these days, she had truly tried to calm herself, to think from his perspective, but understanding did not erase her sense of loss.

In her heart, there was still some resentment. No one wants to admit that they are the one being abandoned.

Yet now, she had a child, and for the sake of the child, some feelings had to be set aside, as if nothing had ever happened.

Unexpectedly, Fu Shinian was not in the ward watching over his grandmother. There were only two caregivers who, having never seen her before, were slightly defensive in their demeanor. After Su Mu introduced herself, they relaxed a bit and politely addressed her as ’Mrs. Fu’.

Su Mu responded lightly and walked over to stand by the old lady’s bedside. She looked down at the amenable old woman, unconscious, and gently held her hand. She called out ’Grandma,’ wishing so much that the old lady would slowly open her eyes at the sound of her voice as she had before and smile at her, saying ’Susu’.

But reality was cruel.

The old lady did not wake up as she had hoped.

After quietly keeping her company for a while, Su Mu got up from her seat and asked the standing caregivers,

"Where is Mr. Fu?"

The two caregivers looked at each other and said,

"He hasn’t come today yet."

Su Mu nodded her head, said nothing more, and prepared to leave. But just as she was about to close the door and turn away, the person who had only been in her thoughts suddenly appeared unexpectedly before her, giving Su Mu the surreal impression of a dream.

She looked at him, her expression mild,

"You’re here?"

Fu Shinian looked down at her, his eyes void of emotion, but his tone obviously carried displeasure as he stated,

"What are you doing here?"

Barely believing what he had just said, Su Mu’s gaze grew slightly puzzled. A faint ache began in her chest; if she was not mistaken, the look Fu Shinian gave her was not one of compassion, not of regret, and certainly not of guilt, but of disgust.

Yet, why?

What did I do wrong? I’m the one who’s been wronged, aren’t I?

Su Mu’s gaze unwaveringly locked on him:

"I came to see Grandma."

"We don’t need you here, you can leave."

After saying this, Fu Shinian walked past Su Mu without a hint of longing, as if she was completely unnecessary.

The sudden change caught Su Mu off guard. Before the incident, he had promised himself, they were fine back then, he had offered her a beautiful future, promising to be with her for a lifetime, those weren’t dreams, but how did everything change in the blink of an eye?

She wanted to ask why, but when she opened her mouth, her words were somewhat uncontrollable. She said:

"I’m pregnant, do you know that?"

Su Mu’s words successfully halted Fu Shinian’s steps. They stood back to back, frozen in place. Afterward, Su Mu slowly turned around, came up to him, and looked up into his eyes, where there was no hint of surprise.

He knew about her pregnancy.

Su Mu wanted to speak, but before she could utter a word, Fu Shinian had already interrupted her. If it weren’t for the fact that they were alone in this corridor, Su Mu wouldn’t believe he was speaking to her as he looked at her and scoffed lightly:

"Pregnant? Su Mu, do you think I haven’t been embarrassed enough? Do you need to stand in front of me to tell me this news, to see me in distress to feel satisfied?"

"What are you talking about?"

"Don’t you understand?" Fu Shinian snorted lightly, "Your pregnancy is only one month along, the last time I was with you was in late December, I haven’t touched you since then. Do you think this one-month-old child is mine?"

Su Mu understood, it was outrageously absurd, but laughably so, forcing a laugh out of her. She started with a light laugh, which soon turned into uncontrollable laughter, and eventually, she was laughing through tears. She looked at Fu Shinian as if he were a stranger:

"Who told you I’m only one month pregnant? What are you doubting? Are you suspecting that I cheated on you, that I had relations with another man? Is that it?"

Fu Shinian clenched his teeth in silence:

"Whether you did or not, you know in your heart."

"Of course, I know." Su Mu suddenly changed her tone, losing all her humor: "I haven’t done anything to wrong you, I have only ever been with you, I..."

At this moment, Su Mu realized something. She looked at him, her lips curving slightly:

"What you want to say is, the child in my womb, is Wen Han’s?"

Being one month pregnant, she did have a physical encounter with Wen Han in January. Fu Shinian saw those photos. But no one knew if anything more happened between them better than Su Mu did. She initially thought Fu Shinian believed her. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t have held onto her before, nor would he have done so much to keep her.

She never thought that, in reality, Fu Shinian had never believed her, he had always been skeptical.

"Is it true that no matter what I say, you won’t ever believe there’s nothing between me and Wen Han?"

Fu Shinian scoffed:

"The most foolish thing I’ve done was to believe your ’nothing’ in the first place."
