Chapter 274: Chapter 274 She’s Not Easy to Mess With, and I’m Even Worse

Su Mu had been disappointed with Fu Shinian before, but even if all the disappointments over the years were added together, they were not as profound as the disappointment she felt at this moment—she had become desperate.

She wished it was all a dream, yet Fu Shinian’s eyes and expression told her just how real it was, so real that she had no choice but to accept this harsh reality.

Looking at the disgust brimming in Fu Shinian’s eyes, Su Mu couldn’t help but let out a light laugh:

"Isn’t that the same for me? The thing I regret most is believing that you had changed your heart."

Fu Shinian looked at her, saying nothing, but Su Mu failed to notice his tightly clenched fists, as if he were desperately trying to suppress something.

Su Mu shifted her gaze away from his face, wanting to say something, but suddenly feeling that anything she said would be useless. She wanted to leave, and she should leave. The air here was so oppressive it was almost suffocating. Staying any longer would serve no purpose; she couldn’t awaken someone pretending to be asleep.

As she took steps to leave, her vision suddenly went blank and her body uncontrollably softened, collapsing. The last thing she thought of before losing consciousness was the child in her belly. She had just started to get better; she couldn’t have any more accidents, but then she thought, perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad if something did happen.

After all, she wasn’t a child who came into this world because of expectation and blessing.

Better gone, then.

What Su Mu didn’t know was the moment she fell, Fu Shinian immediately caught her in his arms to prevent her from hitting the ground. She also didn’t know that Fu Shinian crazily shouted "Qiao Yu’s" name. And of course, she was even less likely to know that once Qiao Yu hastily carried her off, a trail of fresh blood was slowly spreading down the hallway.

When she woke up again, the first person Su Mu saw was Jiang Bei. She thought she had seen wrong until Jiang Bei stood up and tightly grasped her hand:

"Susu, how are you feeling? Is there any discomfort?"

Su Mu looked at her:

"Why have you come back?"

"Of course I had to come back when such a big thing happened to you." Jiang Bei’s eyes unexpectedly reddened: "You didn’t even have someone to talk to. If I hadn’t come back, you might have suffocated from the silence. Wei Shaoqin, that useless guy, I told him to take good care of you, but he ran off to play abroad over the New Year. I really regret leaving you in his care in the first place."

Although Su Mu seemed to be listening to Jiang Bei’s words, they didn’t quite resonate clearly with her. She couldn’t focus her attention, constantly replaying the words Fu Shinian had said to her, until Jiang Bei finished speaking before she came back to her senses:

"It’s not his fault. No one could have anticipated such an accident."

"I heard the person who kidnapped you died on the spot. Has there been any news from the police?"

Su Mu shook her head, not wanting to continue the topic:

"You had only been to Tokyo for a few days. Aren’t you worried about affecting your residency by coming back so soon?"

"It’s fine."

"Who told you about these things?"

She had cautioned Wen Han before, so it couldn’t have been him. As for Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu, with her current relationship with Fu Shinian like this, they probably wouldn’t involve themselves further by telling Jiang Bei anything—doing so would be like delivering an atomic bomb to Fu Shinian.

Jiang Bei originally didn’t want to say, because she didn’t want Su Mu to worry about her problems anymore, but seeing the earnest look in Su Mu’s eyes, Jiang Bei couldn’t bring herself to lie, and she spoke softly:

"Rong Shen told me."

"Rong Shen?"

Learning that Su Mu had been kidnapped and hospitalized was an unexpected turn of events for Rong Shen. He had returned to the country to handle some matters and was visiting a hospitalized brother when he happened to see Su Mu. Without much effort, he found out what had happened to her and, when faced with the decision of whether or not to inform Jiang Bei, he evidently chose to tell her.

There was no special reason, nor was it about currying favor; he simply felt that Jiang Bei would want to know.

Regarding Fu Shinian, Su Mu thought that Jiang Bei would bring him up, but she never mentioned his name from the beginning to the end, as if he didn’t exist at all. She just stayed with Su Mu, engaging in light conversation until Su Mu fell asleep. Then she slowly reigned in her smile and carefully stepped out of the ward.

Qiao Yu seemed to know what she was about to do, waiting outside Su Mu’s ward all along. As soon as he saw her coming out and striding toward the elevator, Qiao Yu quickly stepped forward to stop her:

"What are you going to do? Are you looking for Fu Shinian?"

Jiang Bei looked at Qiao Yu and let out a cold laugh:

"What? After an incident like this, shouldn’t I go find him? If I don’t stand up for Su Mu today, does Fu Shinian really think she is all alone without any support and that he can bully her as he pleases?"

"The situation isn’t what you think."

"Then what is it? I’ll give you time, tell me." Seeing that Qiao Yu said nothing, Jiang Bei spoke with sarcasm: "Could it be that even you can’t come up with any excuses? I’m telling you, Qiao Yu, even if he has his reasons, he can’t treat Su Mu like this. The child in Su Mu’s belly is his; he can’t deny that!"

"Jiang Bei..."

"Considering our history as colleagues, I advise you to step aside. You’re not my match, and I don’t want to get into a fight with you here in the hospital where we work. If this gets out, it won’t look good for either of us."

Qiao Yu wanted to say something else, but Rong Shen, appearing from nowhere, watched the scene with an amused smile and spoke softly:

"Doctor Qiao, it’s better not to get involved. Maybe you can just manage a draw with Jiang Bei, but with me added to the equation, you’re bound to lose. I always take the lady’s side, unconditionally."

Qiao Yu looked at Rong Shen with a headache:

"Does this have anything to do with Mr. Rong?"

"Hmm, but Jiang Bei wants to deal with it, so it has to do with me."

Jiang Bei should have been grateful, speaking on her behalf, but the more she listened, the more stifled she felt. She turned and glared fiercely at Rong Shen:

"Stop with your crocodile tears here. None of my affairs have anything to do with you."

Rong Shen simply watched her with interest, smiling without replying.

Jiang Bei pressed the elevator button, and as the doors slowly opened, she stepped inside. Qiao Yu wanted to stop her again, but Rong Shen held him back. He looked at Qiao Yu with a pleasant expression, but his words rang out like a bolt from the blue:

"Doctor Qiao, you’d better take my words to heart. My woman is not to be trifled with, and I am even less so."

Upon hearing this, Qiao Yu looked up at him:

"Your woman?"

Rong Shen gave a slight smile but said no more as he walked toward the stairwell.

When Jiang Bei reached the top floor, the men in black, as usual, tried to stop her, but she was in no mood for the polite conversation she had with Qiao Yu, and started throwing punches right away. However, after only a couple of exchanges, with no winner decided, Fu Shinian’s voice came through coldly:

"Let her in."
