Chapter 266: Meeting an Old Friend

Chapter 266: Chapter 266: Meeting an Old Friend

Before heading out, Su Mu visited the old lady’s room, who was getting ready for bed. When she learned that Su Mu was about to leave, she immediately had Auntie Wang arrange a driver. She also suddenly developed a sense of reluctance and, reaching out her hand with an affectionate smile, she said:

"Susu, Grandma wants to hug you."

Su Mu walked over obediently, letting the old lady embrace her. She returned the hug and smiled lightly:

"Grandma, you should take a nap first. By the time you wake up, I will be back."

"Alright, when I wake up, I want you to be the first person I see."

Su Mu smiled:

"Okay."

——

Before going to the hospital, Su Mu wanted to stop by the bank. She asked the driver to park at the bank and went in to take care of some business. Unexpectedly, she ran into Wen Han, who was also there. They hadn’t seen each other for a while, but the reunion felt like a distant illusion.

Wen Han hadn’t expected to meet Su Mu there either. He walked over with a slight smile:

"Are you here for business?"

"Yes, my mother left a bank card with an amount of money that has an unclear source, and I want to check it."

Wen Han glanced at the queue in the lobby:

"Today is the bank’s first day back in business after the New Year; it’s unavoidably a bit crowded. How about I take you to the back office? They can look it up directly for you. It’ll be faster that way, and you won’t have to wait as long."

This was naturally a good suggestion, but Su Mu hesitated:

"Would that trouble you?"

Wen Han shook the various documents in his hand:

"I’m here to take a shortcut as well; it’s just a coincidence that I ran into you."

With no further reluctance, Su Mu followed Wen Han and was escorted by a staff member to the upstairs office.

In the manager’s office, Wen Han let Su Mu speak first about the business she needed to handle. Su Mu briefly outlined her request, but unexpectedly, the manager paused, looking at Su Mu with a hint of inquiry.

Engrossed in retrieving her card from her wallet, Su Mu did not notice the manager’s expression, but Wen Han saw everything and remained calm without showing it.

She had prepared her deceased father’s card number and identity card details on a piece of paper in advance and handed it to the manager. After taking a look, the manager responded courteously:

"After all, this is a matter from two years ago, and the account holder has passed away. We cannot guarantee we’ll be able to find the details. Of course, we will do our utmost, but if we really can’t find these records, I hope you won’t be too disappointed."

Disappointment was unlikely; Su Mu was more curious about the sum of money.

If her father had so much money before he died, it should have been enough to pay off his debts. Why did he choose to jump from a building and commit suicide? Did he transfer the money to her mother so that she and her mother could live comfortably?

Perhaps, but he probably never considered the possibility that his mother would follow him in death, turning the sum of money into an unsolved mystery.

Su Mu nodded slightly:

"Do your best, thank you."

"You’re welcome."

Su Mu’s business was settled, but Wen Han’s was not. As they had entered together, it wouldn’t be appropriate for her to leave first. So, Su Mu stood by the doorway waiting. When the manager invited Su Mu to sit, Wen Han spoke up to prevent her, stepping towards Su Mu:

"Besides this, there’s nothing else you need to take care of, right?"

Su Mu nodded: "Yes."

"You should go ahead, my business is rather complicated, and I still don’t know how long it will take. There’s no need for you to wait here with me."

Su Mu didn’t speak, but it was evident that she felt somewhat embarrassed, Wen Han, however, smiled slightly:

"Go ahead, I’m not used to having anyone wait for me."

Su Mu smiled faintly and didn’t insist further:

"Then I’ll leave first, thank you for today."

"No need."

After Su Mu left, the manager asked Wen Han to take a seat in the waiting area. As he was about to begin processing the business Wen Han wanted to inquire about, he didn’t expect Wen Han to speak first, startling the manager with his words:

"Do you know the person who just left?"

The manager shook his head:

"No, I don’t."

"If you don’t know her, why did you look surprised when she mentioned the card number and cardholder’s name she wanted to inquire about? Do you recognize the cardholder?"

The manager began to get nervous:

"I don’t recognize them either."

"Then someone must have instructed you about something." Wen Han looked at him, "As far as I know, the detailed bank card information is retained for over two years, even after the account is closed. It shouldn’t be difficult to look up the card number Miss Su provided, right?"

Seated in his original place and swallowing hard involuntarily because of Wen Han’s words, the manager eventually told the truth under Wen Han’s pressing:

"A few days ago, Mr. Fu sent someone to instruct us that if anyone came to look for the details of this card number and cardholder, we should not disclose it."

Wen Han furrowed his brow upon hearing this:

"Fu Shinian?"

"Yes."

Wen Han didn’t speak for several seconds, he was thinking about a question he actually found absurd.

Logically, there was nothing inappropriate about Su Mu investigating her father’s account activities before he passed away. Su Mu and Fu Shinian’s marriage had only lasted a little over two years. During these two years of married life, Fu Shinian never once met Su Mu’s mother, so it was even less likely that he had any contact with Su Mu’s father.

Yet if there truly were no connection, why did Fu Shinian want to stop Su Mu from knowing the source of this money?

There’s only one possibility, the money is related to him.

And Fu Shinian does not want Su Mu to know.

——

After leaving the manager’s office, Su Mu took the elevator down. As the elevator doors were slowly closing, a large hand reached out to stop them. When the doors reopened, a person clad in an elevator repair uniform stepped in. As Su Mu was standing in the center, she stepped back into a corner to make space.

The man was wearing a cap, so when he turned with his back facing Su Mu, she only saw his chin for a moment and thought it seemed familiar, but she couldn’t remember where she had seen him before.

As the elevator doors closed, trapping just the two of them in the confined space, Su Mu felt an inexplicable sense of fear. She glanced at the decreasing numbers on the LCD screen and then fixed her gaze straight ahead.

The elevator mirror was clean, allowing Su Mu to have a clear reflection of the man. He was looking down and Su Mu could still only see his chin, with that feeling of familiarity overwhelming her. Despite her efforts, she could not remember where and when she had seen him before. Her gaze drifted slightly downward, noticing his hand hanging by his side.

Clean and slender, without a trace of roughness, it didn’t seem to be the kind of hand that belonged to an elevator repairman.

In a fleeting moment, a face suddenly flashed through her mind, merging with the man in front of her. Her heart was in turmoil but she forced herself to remain calm, quietly reaching into her bag to grasp her phone. Yet unexpectedly, the man, without even looking back, accurately seized Su Mu’s wrist.
