Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Should We Get a Divorce?
Su Mu’s appearance, resembling a pear blossom bathed in rain, could evoke pity in anyone who saw her. However, this would not include Fu Shinian. He had become determined to teach Su Mu a lesson. If it wasn’t impactful, how could she possibly remember? If yesterday’s incident happened again, he felt he could even kill her!
That was the most painful experience for Su Mu. He completely disregarded her feelings, treating her as if she was a toy to be manipulated, unworthy of any feelings. His forceful actions seemed to tear her heart apart too. But only this time, she did not cry out in pain, make a sound, or shed tears. She felt nothing, like a walking corpse.
When everything was over, Su Mu wasn’t in a hurry to dress as she had been before. She even felt an impulse to run out and let everyone see her as she was. She wanted people to see what this impeccably dressed business genius was really like behind his facade.
Suddenly, she did not understand why she degraded herself, why she fell in love with the devil before her, why she was alive?
When the emergency exit door made a sound, Su Mu snapped back to reality and moved, hearing the footsteps outside fading away. She picked up her clothes that had fallen to the floor and began to dress, her nose picking up the scent of tobacco. She knew distinctly that Fu Shinian was smoking at that moment, standing nearby, coldly watching her.
She rose and slowly dressed herself. Then she walked step by step towards Fu Shinian and raised her hand to deliver him a resounding slap!
Fu Shinian turned his head from the force of the slap, the cigarette butt dropping from his hand. He, like an enraged leopard, gripped Su Mu’s wrist tightly, staring intensely at her:
"Betrayal after crossing the river, huh? Don’t tell me you didn’t enjoy it!"
Su Mu scoffed coldly, "Fu Shinian, you truly disgust me!"
The person she had fallen for, how could he be like this?
——
After Su Mu left, Fu Shinian lit another cigarette. He took a couple of harsh drags before ceasing all movement, the cigarette slowly burning down between his fingers, eventually extinguished by its owner in a trash can, ending its brief and flavorless existence.
Fu Shinian might not be unaware that his recent actions were rather extreme, but he could not control himself. The mere thought of Wei Shaoqin’s desire for Su Mu, the possibility of what might have happened last night, made his heart feel scorched by fire.
She must remember the lesson; otherwise, next time, he might really kill her.
Fu Shinian did not choose the elevator, he went down the stairs step by step, not knowing how long he walked until there was no way forward, and then he finally stopped and exited through the fire escape.
In the underground parking garage, Qiao Yu was waiting by his car. As Fu Shinian approached, he masked his thoughts and stepped forward:
"Not busy?"
Qiao Yu didn’t speak, just stared at him. Fu Shinian felt something was off, looked up at him and smiled slightly:
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
"I’ve known you for many years and never knew the calm and composed you could also be this crazy."
Fu Shinian knew what he was referring to but was still somewhat surprised:
"You saw?"
Qiao Yu didn’t have the habit of snooping on others privately, especially not his friend. He was just checking the premises when remembrance of Su Mu’s mother made him wish to visit. He wanted to see if Su Mu had returned, and since it was just one floor down, he used the stairs out of laziness, only to hear Su Mu’s pleas as soon as he entered. It immediately clued him into what was happening. He considered intervening, but ultimately felt it was awkward and just secured the exit, ensuring no one else would discover them.
"I wasn’t deliberately eavesdropping; I just happened to pass by." Qiao Yu’s face showed no embarrassment as he looked at Fu Shinian: "What exactly are you thinking? It’s a public staircase; do you have no shame, caring not even a bit for Su Mu? Even if she did something wrong, is it necessary to go to these lengths?"
Fu Shinian did not respond immediately. He stared distantly at Qiao Yu for a few seconds, then lit a cigarette. Amidst the swirls of smoke, he spoke:
"Ah Yu, I’m seriously asking you, do you have feelings for Su Mu beyond what’s appropriate?"
Qiao Yu frowned:
"Maybe it’s your private matter, and I shouldn’t interject, or else I wouldn’t have repeatedly made you misunderstand my intentions towards Su Mu."
Fu Shinian chuckled lightly but did not continue the topic, merely stating with indifference:
"Let’s have a drink sometime."
Qiao Yu nodded, "Okay."
...
When Jiang Bei came to see Su Mu after finishing his work, he noticed something was off with her, her complexion even paler than in the morning. He couldn’t help but feel concerned:
"If you’re not feeling well, you should go home to rest. Fu Shinian has arranged the best caregivers for you, you should be reassured with them looking after you."
Su Mu shook her head slightly:
"I don’t want to go home."
Jiang Bei fell silent for a few seconds, examining her from head to toe, then noticed clear stains on her clothes, even a button from her shirt was missing. Suddenly realizing the possibility, he grasped Su Mu’s arm, making her face him:
"Did Fu Shinian come by? What did he do to you, am I right?"
Su Mu found it impossible to lie, given her appearance, even if she did speak, who would believe her?
As Su Mu remained silent, Jiang Bei found his answer, exploding on the spot:
"Is he even human? You’re like this, and he still laid his hands on you? He might not treat you as a wife, but at least should consider you as a human! Don’t blame me for being blunt, even if it’s a lowly woman, he can’t just do whatever he wants."
Jiang Bei was filled with righteous indignation, but Su Mu, the person involved, was unusually calm. Previously, she might have felt a bit sad and aggrieved, but for some reason, even though she had experienced far greater humiliation and despair this time, she instead became composed. Sitting on the sofa, with her arms wrapped around herself, she stared unfocused at a spot and softly said:
"Xiaobei, what do you think... should I get a divorce?"
This question also stunned Jiang Bei for a few seconds. She really couldn’t just rely on her own feelings to advise Su Mu to divorce immediately because no one understood Su Mu’s feelings for Fu Shinian better than her. Su Mu had given all her youth to him. Even though their marriage seemed abnormal to others, Jiang Bei knew that it was just Su Mu’s way of repaying, constantly considering everything for Fu Shinian.
Jiang Bei went over and sat beside Su Mu, worryingly saying:
"Are you serious?"
"Don’t you always advise me to divorce? Why don’t you believe it when I say it today?"
Jiang Bei helplessly:
"Actually, I’m also very conflicted. On one hand, seeing how Fu Shinian treats you, I feel you deserve better. On the other hand, I am ultimately not you, and I don’t understand if enduring humiliation is worth it just to be beside the person you love. Only you can discern that for yourself. I can only watch from a bystander’s perspective, but the final decision is still yours."
"But if you are serious, I support you. For two years, with your own efforts, you provided the best care for your mother without spending a cent of the Fu family’s money. Leaving him, you would live better than you are now."
Su Mu smiled but did not speak.
She actually wasn’t joking. The thought of divorce had indeed flashed through her mind just then; it was also the first time she had thought of giving up on this marriage.
After two years, even if one’s heart were made of stone, it would have warmed up somehow, but Fu Shinian had never looked at her properly from start to finish. His heart harbored only that woman named Qin Nianwan; even before her return, Su Mu had not captured his heart. Now that Qin Nianwan had come back, her being driven out of the Fu family was likely just a matter of time.
Yet, how much real affection did Qin Nianwan have for Fu Shinian?
...
Qin Nianwan had scheduled a lunch with Fu Shinian, whom upon agreeing met her at the restaurant. When he arrived, Qin Nianwan was not yet there. He sat alone in the private room, fiddling with a lighter, absent-mindedly pondering something.
When Qin Nianwan entered and saw him like this, she called out to him, yet he was so engrossed that he didn’t hear her. She walked up behind him and placed her hands on his shoulders, finally snapping him back to reality. He smiled slightly:
"You’re here?"
"What were you thinking about?"
Fu Shinian turned away, avoiding her hands, leaning against the chair back:
"Business matters, I was a bit distracted."
Qin Nianwan sat down next to him, showing concern as she said, "Business is important, but you should also take care of yourself. You need to balance work and rest, so you don’t wear yourself out. It’s impossible for one person to handle such a big company alone."
"Alright."
The waiter came in to take their order, with his eyes occasionally wandering towards Qin Nianwan. Eventually, she noticed and smiled, asking: "Is there something on my face?"
"Sorry, I just think you look very much like Qin Nianwan from ’Star Creation 100,’ but you are even prettier than her."
Qin Nianwan glanced at Fu Shinian and smiled slightly:
"Thank you, I’m very happy."
After the waiter left, Qin Nianwan looked towards Fu Shinian: "Now that ’Star Creation 100’ has almost finished filming and the finals will be broadcast on TV in a month, does the company have any plans for me afterwards?"
"Of course, the company will make arrangements, Sister Chen will discuss the specifics with you."
Sister Chen was the agent Fu Shinian had arranged for Qin Nianwan. She was highly respected in the industry and had excellent resources, recruited by Fu Shinian at a high price, which clearly showed how much he valued Qin Nianwan.
"I wanted to talk to you about something today."
Fu Shinian looked at her: "Go ahead."
"When I was in Country H, I made a friend who took good care of me. Now her family is facing some difficulties, and I want to help her by arranging a job for her beside me."
Fu Shinian was silent for a few seconds, making Qin Nianwan a bit nervous:
"Is there a problem?"
"How could there be? I was just wondering whether your friend is male or female."
Upon hearing this, Qin Nianwan laughed, resting her elbow on the table, her hand supporting her cheek in a naive manner as she looked at Fu Shinian:
"What if it were a man?"
"What do you think?" Fu Shinian asked in return.
Not hearing the answer she wanted, Qin Nianwan felt disappointed. There were some questions she had long wanted to ask, always suppressing them deep within. But now, she didn’t want to wait any longer:
"Ah Nian, ever since we met again, I never asked you what exactly you think of me?"
