Chapter 27: Chapter 27: What’s your relationship with Fu Shinian?

Fu Shinian continued playing with the lighter, but his gaze settled on Qin Nianwan’s eyes as he said,

"Are you asking if I want to get back together with you?"

Qin Nianwan leaned back into the chair, imitating his pose:

"I know you have your concerns now, and you can’t possibly disregard your grandmother’s health, but do you really plan to compromise yourself for a lifetime? You and Su Mu... have no emotional foundation, do you?"

"But the old lady likes her, that’s something I can’t control."

"What about me then?" Qin Nianwan asked. "You can’t be unaware of the reason I returned to the country. When I heard you wanted to break up with me two years ago, I was so heartbroken that I left. I thought I could live well, as no one in this world can’t survive without another, but two years have passed, and only now do I understand how wrong I was."

Fu Shinian maintained his smile without speaking.

"Ah Nian, you still have feelings for me, right?"

Feelings? This word made Fu Shinian want to laugh. Perhaps in the past, he truly believed in such impractical things, but as of today, all he had for this illusory concept was scorn.

"So what if I do? What if I don’t?"

The ambiguous answer left Qin Nianwan feeling uncertain:

"Whether you do or don’t, it makes no difference to me. I didn’t come back to be a star. I came back for you. I want to return to how things were before, to be by your side again. I want to be with you forever, like we used to be."

Fu Shinian looked at her:

"Nianwan, I’m already married."

"What does that matter? If it weren’t for her interference, we wouldn’t have broken up in the first place. Are you trying to tell me that after two years together, you’ve developed feelings for her?"

Fu Shinian smiled faintly:

"No, but no matter the lack of feelings, she is my wife in the eyes of the law, and you, despite being an ex-girlfriend, appear to others as nothing more than the third party. Nianwan, it’s not worth it, nor is it a smart choice."

"The most foolish decision I’ve ever made in my life was agreeing to break up with you!"

...

Su Mu left the hospital at five o’clock. By that time, the photo of Qin Nianwan taking a group picture with the restaurant staff had already climbed to the top of the trending search list. Normally, a newcomer who hadn’t officially debuted wouldn’t garner such huge traffic, but the person who released the photo also dropped shocking news, claiming the person dining with Qin Nianwan was none other than the Chairman of Fu Corporation, Fu Shinian.

In an instant, previously suppressed news resurfaced, revealing that the mysterious girlfriend of Fu Shinian was Qin Nianwan from "Star Creation 100".

Su Mu didn’t often follow entertainment news, but on the way back home, the driver was a gossip enthusiast, and she heard the broadcast clearly, unable to avoid it.

Fu Shinian heard about the news while on the way to the airport, and Song Yi presented it to him:

"Need to handle it?"

Fu Shinian glanced at it indifferently, recalling how before leaving the restaurant, Qin Nianwan had actively introduced herself as Qin Nianwan to a waiter and agreed to take a photo, presumably with this very purpose in mind.

"No need," Fu Shinian continued to rest with closed eyes. "Let her be."

"What about the old lady..."

"I’ll handle it."

Fu Shinian didn’t appear that evening, and Su Mu waited until ten o’clock.

For the first time, in the absence of Fu Shinian, Su Mu felt a sense of relief, unexpected yet real. She realized that some things she thought were constant had subtly begun to change.

This left her somewhat bewildered; after all, she had once believed some things lasted a lifetime.

But if warmth can nurture a person’s heart, then coldness can certainly freeze it, and Su Mu’s heart might well belong to the latter.

She slept without dreams, yet her sleep was restless; the slightest noise could wake her, making her think Fu Shinian would appear at any moment. However, it turned out he didn’t return all night.

The next morning, Su Mu went to visit her mother at the hospital but didn’t expect to see Wei Shaoqin at the entrance. He seemed to have waited for quite some time, hurrying out of his car as soon as he saw her, blocking her way despite Su Mu’s indifference:

"Move aside!"

"I just wanted to see how your mother is doing. Is it necessary to be so resistant?"

Resistant? He would probably never understand what she had gone through because of his whim: her mother gravely ill, her husband’s humiliation, the most undignified moment of her life.

He might feel fortunate, fortunate that he was not like Jiang Bei, or it would be much more than just resistance.

"Has Wei Shaoqin tired of the drama of coercing the common girl and now seeks to act the part of a sneaky predator instead? Unfortunately for you, I am not your supporting actress, and you’d best not impose your sick games on me again. I let it go once, but that doesn’t mean I’ll always be so easy to talk to!" After saying that, Su Mu tried to walk past him, but was once again stopped:

"Su Mu, regardless of everything, I haven’t actually harmed you, and your mother has passed the critical stage. It was just my approach that was a bit too extreme..."

"Approach too extreme?" Su Mu laughed coldly. "If it wasn’t for my mother’s emergency last night, if it wasn’t for me trying to stop you by threatening suicide, would you still think there’s something wrong with your approach?"

Wei Shaoqin opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted by Su Mu:

"You wouldn’t! You still don’t realize what you’ve done wrong. You rich people always feel superior, never putting yourselves in others’ shoes to think through the issues, never understanding how hurtful your actions are!"

Su Mu walked away, and this time Wei Shaoqin didn’t stop her, not because he didn’t want to, but because he was still shocked by Su Mu’s words. He had seen her contempt, her disregard for money, her readiness to face death resolutely, to inflict harsh treatment on him, and her disorientation in panic. But what was this despair and melancholy radiating from deep within Su Mu right now?

When he came back to his senses, he realized Su Mu had already left. He hastened his steps and once again stood in front of her. He didn’t speak but just stared at her, yet her face no longer showed any of the emotions from before, replaced instead by clear impatience and annoyance:

"What on earth do you want?!"

Wei Shaoqin spoke up: "What’s your relationship with Fu Shinian?"

Su Mu visibly flinched.

"Is he the boyfriend you mentioned?"

"What’s that to you?"

"I really underestimated you. I thought you were different from the others. Turns out, you had a backer like Fu Shinian. Naturally, who else would you care about with him supporting you? But is he sincere towards you? Not to mention whether he provides you with enough material life, the woman who has been publicly acknowledged and accompanied him recently is someone else, not you. In his eyes, what are you worth?"

Fu Shinian knowing about Wei Shaoqin was understandable to Su Mu, but why had Wei Shaoqin also guessed at her relationship with Fu Shinian? Su Mu dared not admit it; she could not figure out what had transpired between these two men.

"Have you been seeing prostitutes for so long that you think everyone is like yourself?" Su Mu scoffed. "What my relationship with Fu Shinian is, how he treats me – what business is that of yours? Instead of concerning yourself with unfounded speculations, you might as well focus on improving your own moral character!"

"Is that an admission?"

Su Mu was silent for a few seconds, then looked at him with a touch of sadness:

"Wei Shaoqin, let me make myself clear, even if you see me as nothing more than a woman to be bought, I am certainly not one within your reach!"

For half a month, Su Mu hadn’t seen Fu Shinian, and there wasn’t even a phone call. She wouldn’t reach out to him, and he certainly wouldn’t contact her, as if they could erase each other from their lives.

Qin Nianwan started to appear frequently on the front pages of entertainment sections, enjoying the limelight, with media hailing her as the champion of "Star Creation 100", and leaks suggesting she was the only artist signed to a decade-long contract with Fu Corporation.

As for these things, Su Mu was not very interested. As long as Qin Nianwan didn’t confront her or harm Fu Shinian, she felt these were things far removed from her life.

Her mother was recovering quite well and had returned to the convalescent home. Su Mu’s wrist injury had almost healed, so she returned to work at the milk tea shop. She also resumed taking driving jobs at night, without worrying about getting home before ten o’clock to avoid detection by Fu Shinian.

That night was busy. From 8 o’clock until after midnight, she had handled five jobs, and with tips, she had made nearly a thousand yuan. She planned to end her workday, but then a call came in about a new client. She glanced at the time and decided to take it.

Su Mu arrived at the arranged place by 12:30 a.m., and even though it was late at night, the bar street of Shen City still felt like being in the midst of a bustling market.

Half an hour later, the client still hadn’t shown up, and Su Mu began to regret her greed. But having already waited for half an hour, leaving now would mean a total loss. She found a secluded step to sit on and settled down.

Inside Juese Bar, Fu Shinian leaned on the sofa tiredly, displaying an evident lack of enthusiasm for everything around him. He had been called here straight after disembarking from the plane, and the revelry continued to the present moment.

He glanced at the time:

"It’s getting late, let’s call it a night. The driver I called has arrived."

"Come on," Ji Nanfeng protested, not ready to end the night. "What’s the rush? What do you have to do, get home to a warm bed and a loving wife?"

The words "loving wife" made it hard for Fu Shinian not to think of Su Mu. He had gone abroad abruptly for half a month, and she had been far from idle, her comings and goings more frequent than before, never returning home before midnight. He had wanted to wait for her to speak up, but it seemed she never learned to be good.
