Chapter 258: Chapter 258: I Promise You

As Rong Shen made dumplings, Jiang Bei called her family to wish them a Happy New Year. Hearing her conversation with her family from the kitchen, Rong Shen’s heart churned like the dumplings in the boiling pot.

Initially, he intended to call Su Mu, but as Rong Shen walked out with two plates of dumplings at that moment, Jiang Bei dropped the idea of calling and hastily sent a text message instead: Susu, Happy New Year.

The dumplings were surprisingly delicious, comparable to her mother’s cooking. She couldn’t help but admire the man before her; however, whenever she caught his gaze, Jiang Bei could immediately discern the intentions he harbored toward her.

As midnight approached, the words about Rong Shen kept appearing more frequently in Jiang Bei’s mind. She couldn’t deny her nervousness, even looking around for something to defend herself with, only to have Rong Shen see right through her:

"Looking for something? All the knives are in the kitchen. Shall I bring them to you?"

Jiang Bei’s heart strangely calmed down at Rong Shen’s words, and she looked at him:

"It’s getting late, you should go back."

Rong Shen didn’t speak for a few seconds, just gazing at Jiang Bei with a stark intensity before saying, "Have you forgotten what I said earlier?"

"I haven’t."

"Then do you think I was joking?"

"No."

"Expecting me to be merciful, or to change my mind?" Rong Shen smiled faintly, "If so, you might as well just tell me directly, and agree to be my woman."

Jiang Bei shook her head:

"I won’t agree."

Rong Shen glanced at his wristwatch:

"There are 10 minutes left until New Year’s. You might want to think it over."

Jiang Bei had never endured such a long and tormenting ten minutes. She felt every second ticking by like a knife piercing her heart, torturing her senses, shattering her awareness.

The moment the clock struck midnight, Jiang Bei stood up from the sofa. Rong Shen was sitting across her, gracefully drinking tea. He simply glanced up softly at her, then spoke:

"What’s your answer?"

"Rong Shen." Jiang Bei’s voice was almost pleading, "Let me go."

This was the first time in her life Jiang Bei had ever spoken in such a humble tone, yet to Rong Shen, it was just cause for a light chuckle. He drank the last drop of tea from his cup, slowly placed the cup on the table and said indifferently:

"It seems you still haven’t learned."

He then rose to his feet, and as Jiang Bei instinctively stepped back, she found herself unable to retreat further due to the sofa behind her.

Rong Shen looked at her:

"Want to fight about it, to settle it conclusively?"

"I can’t beat you."

"So, would this be considered passive resistance?"

Jiang Bei looked at him, "You’re determined to have your way?"

"Yes."

"So, no matter what I do today, the outcome will be the same?"

Rong Shen smiled faintly: "Apart from an act of God, there is likely nothing that can change tonight’s outcome."

Jiang Bei paused for a few seconds:

"Then I agree to it."

"Promise what?"

"To be your woman."

Rong Shen gave a slight smile, "And then? If I’m not mistaken, this is just a stalling tactic, right? You want to dodge trouble today and later, when you’re sure I won’t harass you, propose a breakup, correct?"

Jiang Bei smiled lightly:

"Why don’t you believe that I could truly fall in love with you before I propose a breakup?"

"It’s not that I don’t believe in myself, it’s that I don’t believe in you."

After he said this, he stepped over the low table in front of him and came closer. Jiang Bei didn’t dodge because if he wanted to do something to her, her struggling would be superfluous. He stood beside Jiang Bei and reached out to stroke her short hair, speaking softly:

"Grow your hair long, I like long hair."

Jiang Bei chuckled lightly, "I also like you better when you’re a bit farther from me. Can you manage that?"

"No."

After speaking, he bent down and picked up Jiang Bei. Jiang Bei struggled, scratching his face, "I’ve already agreed to you, you can’t treat me this way."

"Now that you’re already my woman, what is there that I can’t do?" He carried her toward the bedroom, "Jiang Bei, you really don’t know how to behave and you know too well what you want. If not by this means, I think I would never have the chance to get close to you in my lifetime."

He threw her onto the bed and stood by the bed starting to undress. Jiang Bei tried to escape a few times, and each time he caught her back. Finally, she twisted her ankle and was in so much pain that she could not move; he might have felt some relief, as the injured her could no longer escape.

Watching her final struggles, she threw everything she could find at him, and then in the chaotic room, he overpowered her.

That was the first day of the 2016 lunar year, Jiang Bei, under Rong Shen, lost her first time.

Her phone also broke that day, which led to Su Mu not being able to contact Jiang Bei for the next three days.

——

On the day of the banquet, the elderly lady, knowing they would attend together, happily helped Su Mu pick out a gown, but since Su Mu rarely attended such events, she had few gowns, most of which she had left at Bishui Yuntian. Su Shiyue had many gowns, but her style was completely different from Su Mu’s, and Fu Shinian did not agree with his woman wearing someone else’s clothes, even if it was his own sister’s.

So, after lunch, many high-end gowns were delivered to the old house and lined up in a row in the living room, giving Su Mu the feeling of browsing through a shopping mall. Looking discontentedly at Fu Shinian:

"Aren’t you exaggerating a bit?"

"How so?" Fu Shinian smiled just right, "Go on, see if there’s anything you like."

Su Shiyue was eager:

"Brother, can I also pick two?"

"Of course."

"I knew you loved me the most." After saying this, she pulled Su Mu over, "Sister-in-law, let me help you choose. What color do you like? What style? My brother’s personality will definitely not agree to a gown that exposes the chest, but I wonder if a backless one is okay. It’s a pity not to show off your great figure."

Su Mu smiled lightly:

"I can’t pull off that style, something plain will do."

Su Shiyue helped Su Mu pick many gowns, and Fu Shinian directly vetoed those that Su Mu did not like, suggesting to the brand representatives that they need not bring any more gowns with styles like off-shoulder, chest-baring, or backless in the future.

Su Mu was speechless, but couldn’t deny the sweetness that was sprouting in her heart.

Eventually, the elderly lady took charge and chose a silk cheongsam that was black and white, but more accurately resembled an ink wash painting from Jiangnan Water Town. With a skirt neither too big nor too small that reached just to the ankles, covered with a layer of light, dreamy white tulle, it seemed as if the misty rains of Jiangnan Water Town were captured in this petite garment.

When Su Mu changed clothes and walked out of the room, Fu Shinian was momentarily taken aback, watching Su Mu as if she had stepped out of a painting, and smiled slightly:

"Grandma’s taste is truly excellent."
