Chapter 257: Chapter 257: Mastery and Entry into the Inner Chambers

The call from Jiang Bei came at a risky time for Fu Shinian.

It wasn’t until 9:50 pm that Su Mu’s phone rang. Hearing that urgent "Xiaobei," Fu Shinian finally let out a sigh of relief. After all, he had been under Su Mu’s suspicious gaze all evening, to the point where even he began to harbor some doubts.

He thought that Jiang Bei might not wake up tonight, but Rong Shen was a man of his word.

Fu Shinian didn’t know what Jiang Bei said to Su Mu during that call, but one thing was certain, Jiang Bei had not revealed a bit of her condition to Su Mu. She hadn’t even mentioned that Rong Shen was by her side. Otherwise, Su Mu wouldn’t have appeared so relieved.

After hanging up the phone, Su Mu finally showed her first genuine smile of the day. Fu Shinian had been sitting on the sofa, dealing with emails, and now he looked up from the computer screen at her:

"Feeling relieved?"

Su Mu nodded:

"Yeah, Xiaobei is fine, just really busy."

"That’s good, don’t forget what you promised me."

Su Mu: "..."

Why did she suddenly feel like she had been deceived?

Meanwhile, in Tokyo, Jiang Bei, who had just hung up the phone, glared furiously at the composed Rong Shen sitting beside her. She wanted to restrain herself, to stay calm, but in the end, she lost control and hurled the smartphone she was clutching tightly at Rong Shen.

The phone fell from Rong Shen’s shoulder to the ground, shattering into pieces. Rong Shen didn’t appear angry, but slowly moved his gaze from Jiang Bei’s face to the phone on the floor, a smirk forming on his lips:

"What to do now? Su Mu won’t be able to call you anymore."

Jiang Bei glared at him:

"What do you really want? You’ve got me, isn’t it time for you to leave!"

"Not enough," Rong Shen said to her. "What I want is more than just that."

"Then what more do you want? My heart? Get a knife, and I’ll dig it out for you right now."

Rong Shen chuckled:

"What would I do with a lump of flesh? Eat it?"

He stood up and walked over, stopping beside Jiang Bei. He reached out to touch her chin, but Jiang Bei turned her head to dodge. Rong Shen’s hand froze mid-air for a few seconds before finding Jiang Bei’s chin again, clamping down on it forcefully, making her face him. Looking into her fierce eyes, he suddenly laughed:

"Jiang Bei, retract those thorns of yours. You should know that aside from causing yourself pain, they have no effect on me."

Unable to bear it any longer, Jiang Bei spat in Rong Shen’s face:

"If I had known you were such a heartless beast, I never would have saved you. It’s the biggest regret of my life!"

If saving Rong Shen was the biggest regret of Jiang Bei’s life, then this moment was the most humiliating one in Rong Shen’s life. To be spat on by a woman, he released Jiang Bei’s chin, wiped his face gently with his index finger, and then, right in front of her, licked it with the tip of his tongue. Watching Jiang Bei’s furrowed brows, he laughed softly:

"It’s not like I haven’t tasted your saliva before."

Jiang Bei held back her disgust: "Pervert!"

"Whatever you say," Rong Shen pulled out a tissue and wiped away the marks on his face: "The doctor said you are pretty much okay now, and you can be discharged tomorrow. Of course, if you want to stay here longer, I have no objections, but I’ve only asked for three days off for you at the hospital where I’m doing my advanced studies. You should report back there tomorrow, so weigh your options."

"When are you getting lost?"

"Returning to the country?" Rong Shen smiled faintly: "Maybe when you have recovered enough to get back into bed with me, after all, your taste... is to die for."

A week ago, Rong Shen had arrived in Tokyo on the same flight as Jiang Bei. Initially, he kept his distance from her like a gentleman, renting the apartment across from the one arranged for her by her hospital. Although she was frightened, she seemed powerless to do anything but try not to go out as much as possible and to secure her apartment to the highest level. She couldn’t think of any other way.

It’s not like she could just return to her home country.

Jiang Bei had regrets. Had she known that Rong Shen would show up by her side regardless of whether she left for another country first, she wouldn’t have bothered with all this hassle. It would have been better to stay home and spend time with her parents to comfort Su Mu.

But in this world, there are no such things as early warnings.

On New Year’s Eve, Jiang Bei still didn’t dare to go out. She called for a lot of deliveries, but still couldn’t resist the knock on the door from Rong Shen as evening approached. She wanted to ignore it, to pretend she wasn’t home, but he just used his key to open the door and walk in.

Jiang Bei was dumbfounded as Rong Shen casually tossed his keys on the cabinet in the entrance hall and loosened his tie while looking at her:

"Didn’t anyone tell you that this apartment is my property?"

At that moment, Jiang Bei learned what it meant to be caught off guard.

Rong Shen’s intrusion left Jiang Bei feeling helpless. She thought about calling the police, but then thought that would be useless—after all, it was his property, and the police probably wouldn’t intervene too much if he said he was just talking to a tenant. She thought about leaving, but he had followed her to Tokyo, and it seemed silly to go anywhere else. She thought about using force to drive him out, but they were on equal footing physically. Jiang Bei didn’t stand a chance.

All she could do, it seemed, was wait.

Rong Shen hadn’t done anything to her. Instead, he changed his shoes, took off his coat, and went straight into the kitchen with the two bags of groceries he had brought with him. It was the first time Jiang Bei had seen Rong Shen cook—such a resolute, cold-blooded person bustling about in a sky-blue apron.

She didn’t offer to help. One reason was that she didn’t want to be in close contact with Rong Shen; the other was that she knew nothing about cooking.

The two had their New Year’s Eve dinner, but Rong Shen still showed no signs of leaving. Jiang Bei wanted to say something, but Rong Shen suddenly spoke up:

"Fancy some dumplings?"

Jiang Bei looked at him: "You know how to make them?"

"Hmm."

Seeing that Jiang Bei didn’t object, he stood up and headed back to the kitchen. This time, however, Jiang Bei followed him as if possessed, half-expecting he was only joking, only to find him seriously preparing dough and ingredients for making dumplings in the kitchen.

Noticing Jiang Bei’s arrival, Rong Shen’s lips curved into a light smile:

"Are you really unable to do anything in the kitchen?"

Jiang Bei was not at all embarrassed:

"Why should I? Isn’t everyone cherished like a little princess by their parents?"

The smile at the corner of Rong Shen’s mouth deepened, but he said nothing.

Perhaps because it was New Year’s Eve, or because it was Jiang Bei’s first time spending the holiday in a foreign land, or maybe the façade of strength she maintained couldn’t hold back the yearning she had for her family and friends deep down, so she let her guard down a little around Rong Shen.

Just because he was a compatriot, just because of his New Year’s Eve dinner, a plate of dumplings that she craved and that warmed her stomach.
