Chapter 239: Chapter 239: Giving You New Year’s Money Tonight

Qin Nianwan had previously overheard some things about herself when Su Shiyue spoke on the phone with Grandma, and she had also already seen those reports. Despite how much she thought about it, she never imagined Qin Nianwan to be that kind of person, to have betrayed Fu Shinian two years ago and still pretended to be a good person in front of her.

Every time Su Shiyue thought about it, her anger was uncontrollable; she had been fooled by Qin Nianwan, that woman, for so many years. What’s more infuriating was that she had always misunderstood Su Mu as the third party from back then, but if it hadn’t been for Su Mu stepping in, Fu Shinian might have been even more bitterly hurt.

When Fu Shinian opened the car door, he saw, without surprise, that Su Mu was sitting in the passenger seat. He smiled as his lips curled up because she didn’t like sitting in the back seat with Su Shiyue, and that was why she had moved to the passenger seat. In her heart, her own status probably only ranked slightly above Su Shiyue’s, right?

As Fu Shinian got into the car, Su Mu glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, didn’t speak or react, and continued to play with her mobile phone. It was only after Su Shiyue got into the car and called out "Sister-in-law" that she briefly paused her actions, yet she didn’t respond and maintained her original posture.

Su Mu considered herself to be a good person, but not to the extent of forgiving any person or any wrong. At least, she still vividly remembered the things Su Shiyue had done to her before, and she had no intention of forgetting them.

Perhaps Su Shiyue also understood Su Mu’s reaction and started to apologize:

"Sister-in-law, I was wrong about what happened before. I believed things I shouldn’t have and did many wrongs to you. Can you forgive me?"

Su Shiyue’s words made Su Mu lose interest in her mobile phone. She looked at the road ahead in silence for a moment before finally speaking:

"I don’t have that breadth of heart yet. Maybe one day I can."

"It’s okay," Su Shiyue replied with an embarrassed smile. "I also know how excessive the things I did before were. It’s only natural that you can’t forgive me right away. I’m not in a hurry, I can wait patiently."

Hearing this, Su Mu didn’t say anything else and continued looking at her phone. All this time, Fu Shinian hadn’t interrupted, but now he became somewhat curious as to what exactly was captivating her attention on the phone. He leaned over to look, not expecting it to be just a game of Candy Crush. He smiled slightly and didn’t say anything more, starting the engine.

The company was already on holiday, so Fu Shinian didn’t need to go to the office. He spent a lot of time every day with Grandma, but Su Mu seldom came downstairs. Firstly, she started suffering from insomnia, lying awake all night until she could finally sleep at dawn. Secondly, she genuinely didn’t want to have too much contact with Fu Shinian and Su Shiyue, feeling that this arrangement was good for her.

She quietly waited for Chinese New Year’s to pass, looking for an opportunity to lay things out with Grandma.

After Jiang Bei arrived in Tokyo, he had called Su Mu. Because of the incident at the airport, Su Mu almost immediately asked if he had encountered Rong Shen’s affairs. Jiang Bei was surprised for a few seconds:

"Rong Shen? Don’t scare me, did he really come?"

Upon hearing this, Su Mu breathed a sigh of relief: "It’s good that you didn’t see him, maybe I’m overthinking it. When you left the airport, Fu Shinian saw Qin Meng with Rong Shen. I was worried he might follow you."

"No, you’re thinking too much," Jiang Bei reassured her but also did not divulge too much: "I can’t talk anymore, I’ve just arrived at my place, and there’s a lot to sort out."

After Su Mu advised him to take good care of himself, she hung up the phone, unaware that Rong Shen was sitting right beside Jiang Bei at that moment, with a look of determination on his face.

On Chinese New Year’s day, Su Mu didn’t catch up on sleep in the early morning as she usually did. It was the last day of the year, and she didn’t want to spend it in a daze. If it was the end, she wanted to cross it off clearly and consciously.

When she came downstairs, Auntie Wang was preparing breakfast, and Su Shiyue was talking to Grandma. They were all surprised to see Su Mu, given they all knew about her recent poor sleep quality—she tended to sleep in the early morning and then get up around noon.

Previously, Grandma had been worried that Su Mu might get hungry at night and had asked Auntie Wang to prepare a snack to keep warm in the kitchen, and in the morning, she reminded everyone to be as quiet as possible to avoid disturbing Su Mu’s sleep.

Su Mu was unaware of all these considerations, but everyone had been understanding her situation tacitly.

Su Shiyue was the first to speak, rising from the sofa with a polite smile:

"Sister-in-law, why are you up?"

If these words had been said at any other time, Su Mu might have taken them as sarcasm, but after spending the past few days together, she could feel that Su Shiyue no longer had the antagonism towards her that she had before. In fact, her temperament was somewhat similar to Jiang Bei’s, as both were seemingly unable to hide their true feelings. If Shiyue was only pretending to be nice, Su Mu would have sensed it.

Under these circumstances, it seemed she was truly trying to be friendly.

Su Mu gave a small smile:

"I couldn’t sleep, so I came down."

Su Mu looked around, wanting to see how preparations were going, but Shiyue misunderstood her, responding with a smile:

"My brother went out to walk the dog; he should be back soon."

In the presence of the elderly lady, Su Mu didn’t feel it was appropriate to express her indifference to Fu Shinian’s whereabouts, so she simply nodded and took a seat beside the old lady.

"If you didn’t sleep well last night, you should try to get more rest during the day. Even though today is New Year’s Day, there’s no need for you to come down and do anything. But now that you’re here, have some food and then go back to sleep."

"Okay." Su Mu smiled slightly: "I’ll listen to Grandma."

By the time Fu Shinian returned, they were already seated at the dining table. When he saw Su Mu there, his gaze lingered on her face for a few seconds before he went to wash his hands and came back to sit next to her at the dining table. As he picked up his chopsticks, he asked:

"Why are you up so early?"

Su Mu cast her eyes down without looking at him: "I couldn’t sleep."

The simple three words made Fu Shinian frown slightly: "Are you feeling unwell? I’ll have Qiao Yu come over and take a look later."

"No." Su Mu denied: "It’s just that today is New Year’s, and I didn’t want to spend most of the day in bed."

Fu Shinian found this reason rather novel, smiling slightly:

"How old are you? You still find novelty in celebrating New Year’s?"

At his words, Su Mu paused her movements and finally met his gaze for the first time in days. Shinian met her eyes, raising an eyebrow slightly:

"Am I wrong?"

Right, how could he be wrong? New Year’s seemed to be a holiday for children. Adults often felt it was becoming less and less interesting, and there weren’t many who, like her, got up early and stayed awake specially for the Spring Festival. No wonder Fu Shinian mocked her.

But it seemed he didn’t think it was enough and added fuel to the fire:

"Since you’re so looking forward to it, I’ll have to prepare a big red envelope for your New Year’s money tonight."

Su Mu: "..."

Had he completely forgotten about their impending divorce?
