Chapter 240: Combined Feigned Retreat
Chapter 240: Chapter 240: Combined Feigned Retreat
The old lady saw that these two had such rare interactions over the past few days, and the smile on her face grew wider:
"You prepare yours, I have my preparations too. Tonight we’ll keep the New Year’s vigil together and give Susu her red envelopes."
Su Shiyue muttered discontentedly beside them:
"Grandma and big brother are really biased, aren’t they? I am clearly the youngest in this family."
The old lady laughed:
"You won’t be left out."
Su Shiyue instantly smiled, looking at Su Mu with laughter in her eyes, "Sister-in-law, you should also prepare a red envelope for me tonight, right?"
Su Mu was startled. She hadn’t considered this issue and certainly hadn’t made preparations, but now Su Shiyue was looking at her with such expectation, and with the old lady nearby and Fu Shinian seemingly enjoying the spectacle, she couldn’t bring herself to tell the truth, offering a slight smile instead:
"Of course."
Su Shiyue was delighted:
"Sister-in-law is so nice."
This harmonious atmosphere was something Su Mu had imagined countless times before, being doted on by Fu Shinian and accepted by Su Shiyue. Now it seemed like the scene before her eyes was fulfilling all her past fantasies, yet, she did not want to think that this was happening when she was preparing to leave. Perhaps this was the irony of fate?
There wasn’t actually much to do in the morning, so after breakfast, the old lady urged Su Mu to rest. Unable to refuse, Su Mu could only go upstairs. Although she wasn’t very sleepy at first, she felt a bit drowsy upon entering the master bedroom. Thinking she would just nap for a while, she was surprised to wake up at three in the afternoon.
As she sat up in bed, the sound of firecrackers came from a distance. She looked out the window and smiled softly, thinking this must be the atmosphere of the New Year, even for an adult.
The door to the master bedroom opened at that moment, and Su Mu turned to see Fu Shinian standing at the entrance looking at her, his face wearing a gentle smile:
"Now that you’re up, don’t be lazy, come downstairs and help out."
Perhaps it was the New Year spirit that made Su Mu feel that arguing with Fu Shinian at this time would spoil her mood, so she chose to reply calmly:
"Alright."
After a quick wash in the bathroom and taking her camera downstairs, she realized that Auntie Lin, too, had rushed over from Bishui Yuntian to help. Su Shiyue was arranging couplets and various papercuts with the old lady in the living room. Seeing Su Mu standing at the top of the stairs taking their picture, Su Shiyue hurriedly waved her over:
"Sister-in-law, come and see, I think this monkey papercut should be put up at the front door, but grandma thinks the ’Family Harmony Brings Prosperity to All’ should go there. Which one do you think is better?"
Su Mu walked over and looked at the papercuts in Su Shiyue’s hands, all bright red and auspicious, beautifully and delicately cut; in truth, they would all look good anywhere they were placed. But Su Mu preferred the meaning of ’Family Harmony Brings Prosperity to All’, she smiled slightly and pointed at the papercut to the right of Su Shiyue’s hand:
"I like this one."
Su Shiyue pouted slightly but accepted it:
"Since grandma and sister-in-law both like this one, I, the minority, will follow the majority’s decision. I’ll put it up right now."
Su Shiyue happily headed to the door, and after Su Mu took a picture of her, she picked up other stickers from the table and moved towards the French windows. After just putting up one, Fu Shinian came over, and when Su Mu turned around, she saw a string of colorful lights in his hands.
Last New Year, they were also at the old house, but Fu Shinian spent most of the time in the study and wasn’t around much. This year, however, he seemed very free and even got involved in such activities.
Sensing Su Mu’s gaze, Fu Shinian slightly raised the item in his hand:
"Together?"
Su Mu shook her head: "I’m fine with sticking window decorations."
Fu Shinian didn’t force her, simply pulling a chair over to step on. With his height, he didn’t need a ladder. Standing on the chair and going up on the tips of his toes, he could just reach the top of the floor-to-ceiling window. Su Mu couldn’t help but turn her head to look, and still felt that it was somewhat strenuous for him, and the action seemed a bit dangerous.
When she turned to stick the paper-cuts to the window, Fu Shinian suddenly spoke up:
"Why don’t you take one of me as well?"
Upon hearing this, Su Mu looked up at him and saw him looking down with a shallow smile, "You took photos of Granny and Su Shiyue, even Auntie Wang and Auntie Lin have one, why don’t I have one?"
"I didn’t see you just now."
"But you see me now, don’t you?"
Su Mu never knew that Fu Shinian could also be so shameless. She had indeed thought about taking his photo, but it felt strange when he asked for it himself. However, Su Mu didn’t refuse; she selected a few good angles and took several shots of Fu Shinian.
"Let me see."
Su Mu handed over the camera, and he bent down to take it, pressing the left and right buttons non-stop. She noticed his momentary pause, so she asked:
"What’s wrong?"
Fu Shinian smiled faintly and handed back the camera:
"Nothing, they’re taken very well."
Su Mu, not understanding, glanced at him and walked away with the camera.
Su Shiyue, after finishing the paper-cuts at the entrance, came over to help Su Mu. Su Mu could feel her being extremely careful, as if afraid she would refuse her. Su Mu didn’t say anything; she was already putting in her greatest effort to get along with her peacefully. As for forgiveness, she couldn’t do it at the moment.
While sticking the paper-cuts with Su Shiyue, Su Mu’s gaze uncontrollably kept drifting towards Fu Shinian. Seeing this, Su Shiyue couldn’t help but speak:
"My brother really is forgetful. When he was little, he once fell when hanging lanterns. That year was completely ruined; we went straight to the hospital."
Su Mu was startled upon hearing this and looked at Su Shiyue:
"When did this happen?"
"Many years ago. He was around 11 or 12 years old. Since then, we never hung lanterns for the New Year again. I don’t know what got into him this year."
After saying this, Su Shiyue carefully glanced at Su Mu, seeing that she had completely stopped what she was doing and was watching Fu Shinian. She smiled slightly and turned back to the paper-cuts.
A few seconds later, Su Mu turned her head back but didn’t continue working. She spoke indifferently:
"I can handle it here by myself. You go and help your brother, don’t let him fall again."
Su Shiyue almost reflexively refused:
"I don’t want to."
Perhaps she spoke too quickly, even she felt it seemed a bit self-serving, so she smiled at Su Mu and explained:
"You know what my brother is like towards me. I’m here, safe and sound. If I go over there and he thinks I’m clumsy, he’ll scold me. I don’t want that."
"Why would he scold you if you went to help?"
"Anyway, I’m not going. Better safe than sorry, right? His moods are unpredictable, and it’s safer for me to stay here and carefully stick the paper-cuts." Su Shiyue shook her head, her stance was firm and uncompromising: "I steadfastly refuse."
