Chapter 232: Chapter 232 I Know Everything Now
Fu Shinian went downstairs again when Auntie Wang came up to call him for dinner. He had just finished a phone call with Ji Nanfeng and went downstairs, but in the dining room, he only saw the old lady’s figure. He walked over, took a seat, and waited until Auntie Wang had finished setting the table with food. The person who was supposed to appear still hadn’t shown up.
The old lady hummed lightly:
"Su Mu hasn’t shown up, and you didn’t even ask why?"
Fu Shinian smiled lightly at the old lady:
"Even if I don’t ask, you will tell me, won’t you?"
"How can that be the same? Active concern and passive inquiry are completely different things," the old lady glanced at him disapprovingly, "Susu is asleep in my room. I think she has been genuinely tired these past few days, so I didn’t call her. I just let her sleep well."
Fu Shinian nodded but didn’t say anything.
"Is your company very busy recently?"
Fu Shinian looked at the old lady, puzzled, "What do you mean?"
"With such a big event happening to Susu, I believe she must be feeling very upset. Although she seems unchanged in front of me, I know she is just trying not to worry me. The New Year is approaching, and you should be able to take a few days off at home. Why not take this opportunity to take Susu out for a walk? You’ve been married so long, haven’t had a honeymoon, not even a wedding ceremony. Now would be the perfect chance, and I want to make Susu’s identity public."
Fu Shinian laughed upon hearing this:
"Grandma, if Susu and I go out, then you will be alone at home during such an important time like the New Year. Don’t you think that would be too quiet?"
"The New Year is just a festival; if you don’t consider it a festival, it’s just an ordinary day. You’ve been accompanying me all these years, and after getting married, Susu has, too. It’s time for you two to have your own days," the old lady said, still somewhat worried:
"I don’t even know, after the way you treated Susu before, whether Susu would go out with you."
With that, she gave Fu Shinian a stern look: "What on earth are you doing every day? How could Susu be so blind as to fancy you?"
Fu Shinian: "... Grandma, tell me the truth, I’m not actually your biological grandson, am I?"
"If you make Susu’s mood better, then you are my grandson. Otherwise, I can’t acknowledge you."
The affections between people can sometimes be quite strange. At least Fu Shinian never understood why the old lady liked Su Mu so much, to the extent that even he seemed to be pushed aside.
Fu Shinian sighed helplessly:
"Even if I intended to take her out as you say, she might not want to go."
"Did Susu tell you that?"
Fu Shinian slightly smiled and said no more, decisively choosing not to tell the old lady that Su Mu had proposed the idea of divorce. He would not let that happen, and he himself had never considered divorce, not even when he first saw the photos of Su Mu and Wen Han in bed.
"If we don’t go out, let’s just announce her identity for now. We’ve been married for two years, and only a few people know about your relationship. It’s so unfair to Susu. Now that her mother has just passed away, making her identity public might at least give her some peace of mind."
Fu Shinian was silent for a few seconds, then smiled slightly, "Let’s talk about it later."
"What do you mean talk about it later?" The old lady was clearly unsatisfied, "If you don’t do this, I will take action myself."
When Su Mu woke up, it was already dusk. The room was dim, with only the faint light from outside coming through the window. She realized she was in the old lady’s room and felt a little relieved. She felt for her phone on the bedside table, finding several unread messages and missed calls.
She remembered that she had not set her phone to silent before going to sleep, but the fact was she hadn’t heard any notification sounds, and her phone was indeed on silent mode. There was only one possibility: someone had come in while she was asleep.
Without thinking, she knew who it was.
She returned Jiang Bei’s call and they chatted briefly. Knowing that Su Mu had returned to the old house, Jiang Bei was relieved and didn’t ask about the situation between her and Fu Shinian. Su Mu didn’t say anything either. She was about to go abroad, and she felt her own inextricable issues shouldn’t cause her friend any worry.
Leaving the bedroom, she noticed the old lady was sitting with Auntie Wang in the dining room, picking vegetables in preparation for dinner. She approached and gently greeted them.
Seeing her come out, the old lady hurriedly beckoned her to sit down. Su Mu sat beside her, attempting to help with the green beans, but the old lady stopped her:
"No need."
Auntie Wang agreed, "Yes, we’re almost done here. Don’t bother, the old lady can take a rest now. I’ll take these into the kitchen to wash, and that’ll be it."
With that, she cleared the green beans off the dining table into the kitchen. Su Mu didn’t insist and just smiled faintly.
She knew that the old lady and Auntie Wang were looking after her, being considerate of her feelings. She was touched by their thoughtfulness, but it also inadvertently put pressure on her. How should she tell the old lady about her and Fu Shinian?
How could she broach the topic in a way that the old lady would accept without being heartbroken?
It seemed like an unsolvable problem.
The New Year was coming up soon, and perhaps she should put this problem aside for now. Even if she were to tell her, it should wait until after the Spring Festival.
The old lady and Su Mu took seats on the living room sofa. Seeing that Su Mu’s mood was still not very high, the old lady attempted to find a topic to chat about:
"Susu, do you feel like going out for a walk?"
On hearing this, Su Mu turned to the old lady:
"What does grandma mean by that?"
"I know you’ve been in a bad mood lately with so much happening. So, I think you should go out for a change of scenery; it might make you feel better," the old lady said with a gentle smile, examining Su Mu carefully, "Shinian’s company will have a break soon, let him accompany you."
Su Mu had been somewhat tempted by the idea of going out, but when the old lady mentioned Fu Shinian’s name, her interest clearly vanished. She looked at the old lady and shook her head slightly:
"The New Year is almost here, everywhere will be overcrowded, and I’d rather not travel too far. I prefer to stay at home with you."
The old lady could tell that it wasn’t that Su Mu didn’t want to go out, it was that she didn’t want to go out with Fu Shinian. She had thought that although there had been major conflicts between them, there should have been some easing during these days. But it seemed that there wasn’t any.
Although the old lady knew about the situation between Su Mu and Wen Han, she hadn’t yet communicated with Su Mu about it. She hadn’t meant to speak of it, considering Su Mu’s feelings and having confidence in Fu Shinian, but with the way things were, the old lady felt she had to say something.
"Susu, are you still angry with Shinian?"
Su Mu paused and then looked at the old lady:
"Grandma, what are you talking about? There’s no anger between Shinian and me."
The old lady looked at her compassionately:
"Don’t hide it from me. The previous issue with you and Wen Han... Shinian has told me all about it..."
