Chapter 231: Chapter 231: Murder
Su Mu’s face carried a smile that seemed almost defiant, but perhaps it was just her way of masking the panic within. Fu Shinian gazed at her for a few seconds and mocked:
"Fall in love with you? When did you develop such confidence?"
She had thought that feeling of relief was real since she had already proposed a divorce. She shouldn’t have been affected by the fact that he "did not like or love her" anymore. However, reality always slapped her in the face, telling her that no matter what, she still cared, at least for now.
Su Mu looked back at him for a few seconds, holding back the sourness rising in her chest, and shook her head slightly:
"I haven’t, so I’ve made the right choice now."
Having said this, Su Mu no longer looked at Fu Shinian and gently closed her eyes:
"Please take me to the nearest hotel, thank you."
"Even if you want a divorce, until the formal procedures are completed, you are still Mrs. Fu." Fu Shinian did not wish to say more and simply stated, "Return to the old mansion."
Song Yi quietly wiped the cold sweat on his forehead and responded:
"Yes, Mr. Fu."
Su Mu knew she could not resist and merely slightly curved the corners of her mouth:
"Mr. Fu, are you planning to start a new round of imprisonment?"
"If you wish, I am naturally cooperative."
Su Mu laughed bitterly and did not speak again.
It seemed Fu Shinian had given a heads-up; when the car entered the old mansion, Su Mu saw the elderly lady waiting in the corridor. Her heart suddenly softened; indeed, Fu Shinian was right, despite the significant conflicts between her and Fu Shinian, she had already considered the elderly lady as her family.
After getting out of the car, Su Mu did not wait for Fu Shinian; she hurried towards the elderly lady, and before she could say anything, the elderly lady grabbed Su Mu’s hand:
"It’s cold outside, come inside with grandma."
In fact, Su Mu was not cold. Although the wind had blown on the mountain, the heating in the car was sufficient, and she even felt hot. However, the elderly lady’s hand was very cold; Su Mu warmed it for a while before it began to feel warmer.
Sitting on the sofa, Su Mu spoke:
"Grandma, you can’t be willful with your health anymore; don’t go outside in this kind of weather again to avoid catching a cold."
"Alright." The elderly lady looked at Su Mu and adjusted the hair on her forehead: "Grandma will listen to you, I’ll listen to everything you say."
Su Mu smiled slightly at her words, but she was not entirely sure if the elderly lady had not noticed the bitterness beneath her smile.
When Fu Shinian and Song Yi entered the room, what they saw was this scene. He stood at the entrance for a few seconds, appearing slightly distracted, until Song Yi prompted him from behind. Only then did he snap back to reality and stepped forward:
"Old lady."
The elderly lady responded nonchalantly, not even sparing him a glance. Fu Shinian knew that she was still angry about his previous treatment of Su Mu.
He couldn’t help but wonder what her reaction would be if she knew that Su Mu had officially proposed a divorce, but in the end, he just thought about it, deciding not to disturb the elderly lady’s peace with such troubling issues.
The elderly lady never looked back at him, and Su Mu even less so. The woman who used to drop everything and run to him whenever he returned was gone for good.
He had lost her, an undeniable fact.
Fu Shinian went to the study with Song Yi. As soon as the door closed, Fu Shinian began to angrily untie his tie and threw his coat violently. Song Yi felt as if he were standing at the crater of an active volcano, where everything mattered for life and death.
"How is the investigation into Qin Nianwan’s situation?"
Song Yi spoke:
"I only managed to track her movements before she left Shen City. After she left Shen City, she vanished without a trace, as if she evaporated from the earth."
"Vanished into thin air?"
"Yes." Song Yi found it strange too, "Logically, this shouldn’t happen. Even without Shen City’s vast resources for information, there should still be some clues. But it’s as if her trail was cleanly severed, with no trace left behind."
Fu Shinian was silent for a long time, not uttering a word.
Seeing Fu Shinian like this, Song Yi knew he shouldn’t disturb him. However, given the importance of the matter, he still spoke up:
"Mr. Fu, the investigation indicates that before Qin Nianwan left Shen City... she had visited a sanatorium."
Upon hearing this, Fu Shinian turned to look at Song Yi, his gaze intense:
"A sanatorium?"
"Yes, the very one Mrs. Fu’s mother was staying in. It was before Mrs. Fu’s mother passed away. I verified the dates carefully; Mrs. Fu’s mother died after Qin Nianwan had already left."
"Quiet inquiries at the sanatorium revealed that Mrs. Fu’s mother was in poor health after the surgery but wasn’t critically ill. Her death was unexpected to them as well."
"Of course, we can’t rule out the possibility that the sanatorium is trying to evade responsibility by saying this, but the fact that Qin Nianwan visited the sanatorium is undeniable, and the timing is too sensitive for it to have no connection with her."
Fu Shinian took a seat in his office chair:
"What about Han Lu?"
"She ran away before Qin Nianwan’s incident, back to H country. Song Zhengxian is still busy trying to secure funds for the bid, no problems on that front so far."
Song Yi paused for a few seconds:
"Could Qin Nianwan have also gone back to H country? Could she be with the Song Zhengxian and his group?"
"Song Zhengxian doesn’t have the means to erase Qin Nianwan’s tracks so thoroughly."
Fu Shinian felt that Qin Nianwan’s involvement might not just be with Song Zhengxian’s group now. Perhaps the person he had been waiting for had already made a move.
"I will keep investigating."
"You won’t find anything," Fu Shinian concluded indifferently. "For now, keep an eye on the updates from Song Zhengxian’s end. As for Qin Nianwan... I’ll handle it personally."
Song Yi was about to say something when Fu Shinian cut him off:
"Don’t tell Su Mu about Qin Nianwan visiting the sanatorium."
"Understood."
As Fu Shinian and Song Yi descended the stairs, the living room was already empty of the old lady and Su Mu. Song Yi took his leave, while Fu Shinian walked into the kitchen where Auntie Wang was busy preparing lunch. Seeing Fu Shinian grab some ice water from the fridge, she couldn’t help but speak up:
"In this cold weather, and with your stomach condition, you should drink less cold water."
Fu Shinian smiled faintly:
"Where is the old lady?"
"She went back to her room," Auntie Wang chuckled. "With the old lady keeping company with Su Mu, you don’t need to worry too much."
Even Auntie Wang noticed his concern for Su Mu? Fu Shinian chuckled to himself, nodded without saying anything more, and then headed back upstairs.
In the study, he sat in the chair looking out the window while dialing Ji Nanfeng’s number:
"Qin Nianwan is missing."
"Hasn’t that been the case for three or four days now?" Ji Nanfeng was puzzled. "Why bring this up to me now?"
Fu Shinian briefly relayed Song Yi’s findings to Ji Nanfeng, who then fell silent for a long time:
"Are you suspecting she’s back?"
