Chapter 233: Chapter 233 Someone Can Feel the Grievance
This was a situation Su Mu had never expected would happen. She had thought that there should be at least an unspoken understanding between her and Fu Shinian regarding this matter, that no matter what, they wouldn’t tell the old lady, because they both cared about the old lady’s feelings the same way and didn’t want to worry her with the younger generation’s affairs.
But now, the old lady knew, which shocked Su Mu and left her with no place to hide her shame.
"Grandma, I... "
The old lady tightly grasped Su Mu’s hand, softly soothing her unease:
"When I heard about this, I thought about how aggrieved my Susu must have felt at the time. She faced such a big ordeal, and had no one to talk to by her side. You silly child, why didn’t you come home? Even if grandma is old, I still have the ability to protect you. With me here, no one will dare to harm you."
Su Mu could feel that every word, every single letter from the old lady was sincere care and affection for her. This warmth made her eyes well up with tears instantaneously.
In fact, most people are like this, able to face the coldest faces of the world invulnerable like a diamond, yet easily brought to tears by a word from a loved one.
"Please, don’t say anymore, Grandma..."
"I don’t know what Shinian said to you, but it must not have been anything nice. You should be angry at him, you should scold him. He was in the wrong, and I won’t make excuses for him. When you needed him most, he failed to give you what you wanted. It’s his dereliction of duty. He’s not a good husband. But Susu, don’t be too hard on yourself, lest it damages your health."
"Grandma..."
Su Mu’s tears fell like pearls off a string, as the old lady lovingly wiped them away, her own eyes quietly welling up:
"Don’t cry, don’t cry, Grandma is here for you. No matter what it is, Grandma will make it right for you. Grandma won’t let you be wronged..."
The old lady didn’t know that her words, far from comforting Su Mu, had made her cry even harder. Eventually, she broke down completely, sobbing uncontrollably on her grandmother’s lap, until even Auntie Wang in the kitchen heard the sound and came out, unsure of what to do at the sight.
Fu Shinian, who had been out with Ji Nanfeng for the afternoon, entered the house at this moment and immediately saw the scene in the living room. He involuntarily paused, even his breathing becoming subconsciously softer, although he didn’t know what had happened, he could somewhat guess.
Looking towards Auntie Wang, she helplessly stared at Fu Shinian, who gave her a reassuring smile and motioned for her to carry on with her work. Seeing this, Auntie Wang relaxed slightly and turned back to the kitchen.
Fu Shinian stood still for a few seconds, ultimately not disturbing them with a single word, reopened the door, and left again to check on An Le, who hadn’t been eating well these past few days.
Su Mu’s crying broke the old lady’s heart. It was the first time she had seen Su Mu’s tears, and it seemed as if it had drained all of her strength. But she thought crying was a release and did not stop her, only continually soothing her and repeating "Grandma is here, Grandma is here."
By the time she had calmed down a little, half an hour had passed. Her two eyes were red as cherries, and it pained the old lady’s heart to see her like this, reaching out to wipe away the tears on her face:
"Looking at you cry like this breaks my heart."
Su Mu forced a smile:
"I’m okay, Grandma."
"As long as you’re okay, that’s what matters," the old lady stroked her face: "I don’t ask for much, only that from now on, your days be safe and smooth, happy and carefree."
Su Mu nodded firmly:
"I will."
"Let the past go, don’t take it to heart. Those who calculate against others will eventually be outwitted themselves. As for your mother’s death, you should also come to terms with it somewhat. Everyone experiences parting by life or death; it’s just a matter of sooner or later. For someone your age, it indeed came early, but life is like that. An accident wouldn’t be an accident if it waited for you to be ready."
Su Mu softly responded:
"Actually, Shinian was right, she has been lying in bed for two full years, and I have long been prepared for the fact that she will leave me sooner or later."
"Preparation is one thing, but reality is another." The elderly lady looked at her, "It’s natural to feel sad, and you should be sad, but not for too long. You have to look forward and live your life. I believe your mother wouldn’t want to see you upset for too long either."
Su Mu looked up at her grandmother deeply:
"Grandma, you are so good to me."
The elderly lady smiled audibly:
"You are my treasure. If I’m not good to you, then who should I be good to? As long as Grandma is alive, I will treat you even better in the future."
In the future...
It was a beautiful word, but when Su Mu thought of ’in the future’, she couldn’t help but feel a sour ache in her heart; she might really let her grandmother down with this sentiment of hers.
"Grandma will surely live to a ripe old age."
"Good, with Susu’s auspicious words, even if it’s just for Susu, I will live a long and lasting life, so you won’t be bullied due to your temperament."
When Fu Shinian came back, the living room had returned to normal. Su Mu was not in the living room, but the elderly lady’s eyes were red. He walked over and sat down in front of her, smiling slightly:
"Who upset you?"
The elderly lady glared at him upon hearing this, and Fu Shinian wisely surrendered with a raise of his hand:
"It’s me, it’s all my fault. You can take your anger out on me. Don’t keep it bottled up and harm your health."
"I’m not that angry, when are you planning to get Susu’s feelings sorted out?" The elderly lady sighed, "Just now, Susu was crying by my side. How aggrieved she must have been."
Fu Shinian was silent for a few seconds:
"She hasn’t properly vented the sorrow and anger in her heart from losing a loved one; crying is good for her."
"Your words make sense, but why do they irritate me when I hear them?"
Fu Shinian: "..."
In the elderly lady’s eyes, there probably was no longer a grandson like him, only Su Mu.
When Su Mu came out of the washroom after washing her face, she saw Fu Shinian talking with her grandmother. Their eyes met briefly before quickly moving away, as if strangers, yet with an understanding between them.
At the dinner table, the elderly lady kept putting delicious food into Su Mu’s bowl. Su Mu originally didn’t have much of an appetite, but she knew her grandmother was worried, so she kept forcing herself to eat. However, by the end, she really couldn’t eat anymore, and even felt some churning in her stomach. She barely managed to hold it in, but when the elderly lady placed another rib on her plate, she declared defeat and rushed towards the washroom.
The elderly lady couldn’t help but worry:
"What’s wrong with Susu?"
Fu Shinian stood up: "I’ll go check on her."
