Chapter 226: Chapter 226 You Can’t Let Her Down
No one knew what Fu Shinian and Wen Han had said that day, except for the two of them, but Wen Shaoyuan overheard the last sentence of their conversation as he walked out of the sickroom. He heard Fu Shinian’s voice say:
"She is my wife, from the very beginning, I never thought of letting go."
The old lady was a shrewd woman. Although she didn’t know the specifics of what had happened, she was aware that there was a serious problem between Fu Shinian and Su Mu. Perhaps this time it wouldn’t be solved as easily as before. Now, she sat in the adjacent rest room, incessantly pressing Jiang Bei and Qiao Yu for answers.
Even though Jiang Bei felt indignant on Su Mu’s behalf, she couldn’t disregard the old lady’s health. Ultimately, with no other choice, she pretended to have something else to do and left the room, leaving Qiao Yu to deal with the awkward situation. Unexpectedly, she ran into Fu Shinian in the corridor, who was on his way to visit the old lady.
She looked at Fu Shinian:
"The old lady keeps asking what exactly happened between you and Su Mu."
Fu Shinian responded lightly:
"You didn’t tell her?"
"Do you think I don’t want to?" Jiang Bei huffed lightly, "I’m not keeping quiet for your sake, I’m doing it for Susu. She just lost her mother, and I don’t want her to worry about her grandmother’s health."
Fu Shinian glanced at her:
"Thank you."
He then pushed the door to the rest room open and stepped inside.
In the rest room, Qiao Yu, upon seeing Fu Shinian, breathed a sigh of relief as if he was a savior, hastily made an excuse, and left. As he passed by Fu Shinian, he whispered, "If you hadn’t shown up, I really would have spilled the beans."
Fu Shinian smiled and said nothing.
When the old lady saw Fu Shinian, her expression turned ugly; she seemed unwilling to see him and turned her head away to look out the window. Fu Shinian stood silently for a few seconds before finally stepping forward. He had no choice; after all, he had two little girls at home who needed to be coaxed.
He squatted in front of the old lady and took her hand:
"Look at me."
The old lady was stubborn, ignoring his voice. Fu Shinian ’tsked’: "If you don’t look at me, I might just not say anything."
"Who taught you to threaten elders like that?"
Fu Shinian smiled wryly and said helplessly:
"What are you angry about now? These days, as soon as I leave the company, I come straight back to accompany you, yet you’re not happy at all. Now you’re blaming me?"
"Do I need your company? When did I ever ask you to be with me?"
Fu Shinian looked at the old lady with a mix of amusement and annoyance:
"Why are you being so unreasonable today?"
"I’m being unreasonable? I should be asking you what you’ve done to Susu. I heard from Wen Shaoyuan earlier that Susu quit her tutoring job long ago. Jiang Bei also said she went back to live at her own home and returned to work at the hospital. But you’ve been living apart for days now. Not to mention coming back to the old house to see me, Susu hasn’t even made a phone call. I know this isn’t something Susu would do. Is it you? Is it you who is not allowing her to come back?"
Before Fu Shinian could say anything, the old lady cut him off.
"If you’re not going to tell me the truth, then don’t say anything at all. I’m not a three-year-old child that can be easily fooled by you."
Fu Shinian: "..."
After a few seconds of silence, Fu Shinian looked at the old lady’s uncompromising face and could not help but sigh helplessly:
"Well, Grandmother, you have to promise me, promise not to get angry after listening to what I’m about to say. Stay calm, and don’t take it out on your own health."
"You speak your piece."
Fu Shinian no longer hid anything, recounting to the old lady everything that had happened between him and Su Mu. The more he spoke, the deeper the old lady’s frown became. It wasn’t until Fu Shinian had finished that she finally relaxed a bit, but even then, she seemed more worried than ever. Fu Shinian promptly reminded her:
"You promised not to lose your temper."
The old lady looked at Fu Shinian, and the words she had on the tip of her tongue turned into a long sigh. Once he was sure she was alright, Fu Shinian stood up and took a seat in the chair next to her:
"I know what you want to say, nothing more than that I’ve been foolish and too cruel to Su Mu. But, Grandmother, I am a man, a man with more possessiveness than most. And with my father and them... it’s impossible for me not to care."
"Is that the same thing?" The old lady looked at Fu Shinian. "Your mother and Su Mu are not on the same level at all. You should know clearly that Su Mu would not do such a thing. Not to mention that nothing has happened between her and Wen Han, but even if it had, it would have been against her will; you can’t just abandon her like that."
Fu Shinian listened quietly, not speaking.
"Just lying in the same bed with a stranger is like stabbing Su Mu in the heart. At a time like this, you should be by her side to comfort, care for, and protect her. But what did you do? You weren’t there for her when these things happened, and afterwards, you still said things like ’not allowing her to return to the old mansion.’ The old mansion is my territory; what does it have to do with you? Did you ask for my opinion when you said that?"
Fu Shinian: "... I was wrong, Grandmother."
"Of course, it’s your fault. Could it be Susu’s?" The old lady glared at him with dissatisfaction: "Your grandfather and I loved and supported each other for many years, how come that has not influenced you in terms of affection at all? If you were even half as considerate as your grandfather used to be, Susu’s life would be much better than it is now."
Fu Shinian sat there like a child, obediently taking the scolding without a word of rebuttal to the old lady’s remarks.
"The more I think about it, the more I feel sorry for that child," said the old lady, her voice becoming choked up and her eyes reddening, which startled Fu Shinian. He quickly stood up and reached for a tissue to wipe her tears, but the old lady slapped away his hand:
"Don’t try to act like a good person here in front of me. Can you transfer the care you show me onto Susu? Have you ever considered how frightened she must have been when that incident happened? How heartbroken she would have been? I’m embarrassed to call you my grandson."
Fu Shinian sighed helplessly:
"Grandmother, I’m your biological grandson, not your son-in-law, right?"
"From now on, you’re my son-in-law, and Susu is my biological granddaughter."
Fu Shinian: "..."
Once the old lady had calmed down a bit, she remembered the cause of everything: "The person who designed all this, it was really Qin Nianwan?"
Fu Shinian nodded:
"It was her, there’s no mistake."
"Are you sure there’s nobody else behind her?"
The old lady was pondering something, but Fu Shinian knew what she was thinking and shook his head: "You’re overthinking it. I’ve thoroughly investigated the ins and outs of this matter. Qin Nianwan was only after money, she has no connection to that person."
"That’s good," the old lady nodded, and after a few seconds of silence, she said with regret, "I had originally planned to bring Su Mu’s mother back to the old mansion for the Spring Festival, but it seems we were one step too late."
