Chapter 225: What Qualifies You to Speak to Me?
Chapter 225: Chapter 225: What Qualifies You to Speak to Me?
Su Mu cried in Fu Shinian’s arms for a very long time. He did not utter a word to comfort her, just held her in the same position until she grew tired and fell into a deep sleep in his embrace.
It was only when he stood up with her in his arms that Fu Shinian realized his legs had gone numb without sensation, but he still endured and managed to carry Su Mu to the bed. The moment he carefully laid her down, she curled up like a child leaving a safe haven, adopting an infant-like posture, and subconsciously grabbed his hand, murmuring:
"Shinian..."
Fu Shinian stood silently to one side, looking down at her until her breathing became steady. Then he carefully withdrew his hand from her palm and gently covered her with the blanket, making sure she showed no signs of waking before slowly walking towards the door.
Wei Shaoqin and the others had not left. Seeing him come out, they instinctively wanted to check on Su Mu but were stopped by a gesture from him:
"She’s asleep."
Wei Shaoqin looked at the small, curled figure on the bed and slowly let go of the heaviness in his heart. He couldn’t help but glance at Fu Shinian and said, "Thank you."
The simple words caused Fu Shinian’s dissatisfied gaze to sweep toward him, and he scoffed:
"I was comforting my wife, what does it have to do with you?"
Wei Shaoqin, for once, did not get angry. Instead, he let out a self-deprecating smile:
"She’s my buddy."
After taking another deep look at Su Mu, he turned and left. Fu Shinian watched his retreating figure for a long time without regaining his composure.
Wen Han had been sitting on the bench opposite, while Wen Shaoyuan sat quietly to one side. It was clear he wanted to come over and see Su Mu, but because Fu Shinian was standing at the door, he could only fidget. After a few seconds of silence, Fu Shinian reached out to Wen Shaoyuan:
"Come here."
Wen Shaoyuan hesitated for a second, looked back at Wen Han, and eventually walked over.
"Uncle Fu."
Wen Shaoyuan called out softly. Fu Shinian crouched down in front of him, raised his hand to touch his hair, remembered he did not like that, and instead patted his shoulder:
"Do you want to go in and see your sister Su?"
Wen Shaoyuan’s eyes brightened, and he looked at Fu Shinian with an undisguised skepticism, venturing:
"Can I?"
"Of course, but you have to promise Uncle Fu, be very quiet. She just fell asleep, don’t wake her up, okay?"
Wen Shaoyuan nodded:
"Okay."
After Wen Shaoyuan entered the ward, Jiang Bei stood in a nearby spot, silent for a few seconds: "I’m going to inform the old lady about Su Mu’s condition; she’s still worried."
Fu Shinian looked at her:
"Thanks."
Qiao Yu also noticed something and found an excuse to go along with Jiang Bei, leaving only Wen Han sitting and Fu Shinian standing at the doorway of the ward in the suddenly empty corridor.
Time seemed to stand still, and after a long silence of several seconds, Fu Shinian walked over and sat down beside Wen Han. This was the first encounter between Fu Shinian and Wen Han since that incident between Su Mu and Wen Han, although Fu Shinian felt there was no need for them to meet.
In this standoff, Wen Han was the first to speak:
"I should offer you an apology for what happened before."
Fu Shinian stared at a medical promotional poster on the wall, his voice casual as he spoke:
"Is it because the commander did something to wrong me? That’s why you need to express your apology."
"You know what I mean."
"I don’t," Fu Shinian’s tone became a bit harsher, "Even if it was something from the past, nothing substantial happened between you and my wife, did it? If I were to blame anyone, I wouldn’t blame it on you. At most, I would prefer not to see you."
Because every time he saw him, he would be reminded of those photos, reminded of how intimate Su Mu and he once were, which was more than any man could bear, and Fu Shinian least of all.
"Or does the commander insist on apologizing because you had intentions towards my wife? The malicious actions of others just happened to play right into your plans, and even if you knew from the start, you did not stop it. So you decided to go along with their scheme, and all of this occurred with your silent consent?"
On hearing this, Wen Han looked up at Fu Shinian, his gaze sharp:
"Is that what you think?"
"Of course, I don’t want to think that way. But if the commander keeps apologizing, it’s hard not to think it. After all, if you didn’t do anything, then you are a victim too, aren’t you?"
It was only at that moment that Wen Han realized Fu Shinian was quite similar to Su Mu in some ways. For instance, on the matter of the intimate photos of himself and Su Mu, he felt he was the victim just as Su Mu did, and therefore he had no need to apologize.
Wen Han gave a faint smile, "I understand now."
Fu Shinian glanced at him, and after a few seconds, his gaze returned to the medical poster, his tone reverting to indifference:
"Regardless of how the past events occurred, I thank you for bringing Wen Shaoyuan here today to see Su Mu."
"There’s no need for thanks. Although Su Mu has resigned now, she was, after all, Shaoyuan’s teacher. Given this tragic incident, it’s fitting that he came."
Fu Shinian nodded, seemingly in agreement with what he said, but when he spoke again, it was not as cordial. He said:
"Commander, you know very well the kind of relationship you and Su Mu have now. Even if there is a Wen Shaoyuan between you two, it’s not appropriate to see each other too often. Especially now that Su Mu has resigned from the Wen Family, it isn’t good for her, for you, or for me. Do you understand what I’m saying?"
Wen Han was silent for a few seconds before nodding:
"I have already promised Su Mu that I will not appear in her world again."
"That’s for the best."
"But I also hope you can promise me one thing."
Fu Shinian didn’t respond immediately; looking at Wen Han, he could guess what was on his mind and gave a small smile:
"What would you like to say?"
"You just told me those words, which means you know that although there were photographs taken of me and Su Mu, no substantial relationship occurred. So, can you please not blame Su Mu and continue to treat her as you always have?" Wen Han looked at Fu Shinian, "Or even... better than before."
"She’s a victim. If she had the gift of foresight, I believe she would have rejected the job as Shaoyuan’s teacher right from the start. She didn’t want these things to happen; she’s hurt more than anyone. I know it’s difficult for you to understand and accept these issues as her husband, but considering how much she loves and cares about you, could you perhaps gradually let it go?"
Fu Shinian smiled faintly, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly: "What standing does the commander have to say these things to me?"
"I have no standing." Wen Han uttered a bitter laugh, "You two are husband and wife, and I, as an outsider, should not speak too much. But Mr. Fu, if today’s incident hadn’t happened, you could have slowly worked out the problems between you. However, Su Mu lost her mother today; you have now become the person she cares about most in this world. If even you treat her with indifference, this world might lose all meaning to her."
