Chapter 227: Chapter 227: Perhaps the Last Time

When Mrs. Fu was leaving the nursing home, she kept instructing Fu Shinian to make sure to take her back to the old house to rest after Su Mu woke up. Fu Shinian agreed repeatedly, which finally allowed Mrs. Fu to leave with some peace of mind.

However, Fu Shinian knew very well in his heart that Su Mu might not want to go back with him.

By the time Su Mu woke up, it was already dusk. There were no lights on in the room, and the curtains were drawn, making the entire space dim and somewhat disorienting. But within a few seconds, Su Mu remembered everything that had happened before she fell asleep and where she was.

Even though it was hard to believe, she still had to accept the fact that her mother had left this world.

As she was preparing to get up, she felt the presence of another person in the room. The rhythm of his breath and his aura made Su Mu realize who it was, even without seeing him. Remembering the conversation that had happened before she fell unconscious, Su Mu stiffened and didn’t move.

A few seconds later, she saw a blurry figure standing at the edge of her bed. Just as she was about to say something, a warm, large hand suddenly covered her eyes. As Su Mu began to feel panic, not understanding why, she heard a ’click’ sound, and then the hand covering her eyes lifted slightly.

Su Mu then realized he had turned on the light, concerned that she would not be used to the sudden brightness after being in the dark for too long.

He could be this thoughtful at times? This made Su Mu, who had never experienced such tender care from him, feel surprised for a moment until he spoke up to ask:

"Are you able to adjust now?"

Su Mu nodded, and his hand slowly withdrew from above her eyes.

When Su Mu’s gaze fell upon him, Fu Shinian was sitting down in a chair nearby. As he turned around, his eyes met Su Mu’s, and from her gaze, he saw unfamiliarity. Before he could say anything, Su Mu had already withdrawn her gaze and risen from the bed.

The room was so quiet, and Fu Shinian, who had wanted to say something, also fell silent, watching Su Mu for a long while without speaking.

Su Mu could feel that Fu Shinian’s gaze was fixed on her. She didn’t look at him, so she didn’t know what kind of emotions were in his eyes. She spoke indifferently:

"Where is Jiang Bei?"

"The Funeral Home needed extra hands to handle some matters, so she and Qiao Yu have both gone there."

Su Mu didn’t say anything but walked towards the door. Fu Shinian also stood up and stepped forward to grab her arm:

"What are you going to do?"

"Go to the Funeral Home."

Her mother had passed away, and as the only daughter, she should accompany her mother on her last journey.

With this reason, Fu Shinian could not refuse, although he really wanted Su Mu to rest properly. But from the perspective of a child, it was something she ought to and must do.

"I’ll take you."

"No need, I can go by myself."

He had never had any interaction with the deceased, and he hadn’t set foot in this room once in the two years since their marriage. There was even less reason for him to accompany her now, but Fu Shinian insisted:

"No matter what, we are still family."

After saying this, Fu Shinian didn’t give Su Mu any time to react and directly walked towards the door. Watching his back, Su Mu suddenly felt she couldn’t really understand him.

After what had happened between them, it seemed they shouldn’t be interacting this way.

On the way to the Funeral Home, the car was so quiet that it was almost frightening, but Su Mu no longer had the heart to worry about anything. Her mind was in disarray, as thoughts of what Fu Shinian had said to her kept popping up. He called her selfish, said her mother might not have wanted such a life, suggested her mother would rather be by her father’s side.

At the time, she could hardly accept those words, but now, they all seemed to be true.

She had no idea how Fu Shinian, who never cared about himself or her mother, could see their subtle relationship so clearly.

When the car stopped, Su Mu thought they had reached their destination. It was only after getting out that she realized it was a private kitchen. She couldn’t help but turn to look at Fu Shinian, who had already gotten out of the car and was walking towards her. Seeing the confusion on her face, he said,

"You haven’t eaten all day."

"I’m not hungry."

"You still need to eat a little," Fu Shinian stated as he looked at her resisting body. "It won’t take up too much of your time."

With her lips pressed tightly together, Su Mu stood still, as if silently protesting. Fu Shinian watched her for a few seconds before saying,

"Su Mu, everyone understands your feelings, but shouldn’t you try to see things from Jiang Bei and their perspective? You wouldn’t want everyone to be distracted with taking care of you if you were to faint while they’re busy, would you?"

Hearing this, Su Mu lifted her gaze to Fu Shinian’s face with a sharp look of objection, but ultimately, she didn’t speak and just slowly turned around and walked into the private kitchen.

Fu Shinian had notified Manager Sun early that morning about their visit, so despite the previous misunderstanding with flattering, Manager Sun didn’t dare to say much upon noticing Fu Shinian’s different attitude towards the lady next to him. He simply exhibited the utmost politeness and enthusiasm,

"Mr. Fu, the private room is ready. Please follow me."

Inside the room, the two of them took their seats, and although it was a round table, it ended up looking like they were set for a romantic candlelight dinner. Seeing this, Manager Sun didn’t know what else to say, so he just smiled awkwardly,

"Mr. Fu, in addition to the dishes you’ve ordered earlier, would you like anything else?"

Fu Shinian glanced at Su Mu indifferently and said,

"No need, we’re in a hurry today. My wife and I will leave after eating."

While it was a perfectly ordinary statement, it caused a storm on Manager Sun’s face. Shocked, he looked towards Su Mu, unable to believe that Mr. Fu was already married. Mrs. Fu sitting there also seemed surprised by Fu Shinian’s words; otherwise, she wouldn’t have glanced at him with a slight frown.

As Manager Sun left the private room, Su Mu’s gaze lingered on him. Even though she wasn’t in the mood to discuss their relationship, she still ended up asking,

"What are you doing?"

"Just stating the truth. What’s wrong with that?"

Indeed it was the truth, and Su Mu would have been very happy had he acknowledged her publicly like this in the past. But now, she didn’t feel the same and preferred not to argue with Fu Shinian about it, remaining quiet instead.

Su Mu had no appetite, so she didn’t eat much and put down her chopsticks within a few minutes. Fu Shinian understood her mood and didn’t insist, he too got up to leave. Su Mu spoke,

"You don’t have to accommodate me."

"No, I simply don’t like making others wait for me."

As Su Mu was about to explain something, she saw that he had already put on his coat. The words at the tip of her tongue were swallowed back, and she followed him out.

When they left the private kitchen, Manager Sun’s farewell, "Mrs. Fu, take care," left Su Mu somewhat out of sorts. It was the first time she had been addressed as Mrs. Fu by a stranger, and it might very well be the last.
