Chapter 224: Why Pretend?

Chapter 224: Chapter 224: Why Pretend?

Fu Shinian and Qiao Yu had no idea what Wen Shaoyuan and Wen Han had said to Su Mu in the room, but seeing Wen Shaoyuan’s reddened eyes as he came out of the ward, incessantly asking Jiang Bei ’why’ while clutching her hand, Fu Shinian knew that Su Mu was still the same.

He licked his slightly dry lips, as though suddenly filled with a ruthless resolve. Qiao Yu saw his movement and, before he could take a step, grabbed him, looking at him anxiously:

"What are you going to do?"

Fu Shinian broke free from Qiao Yu’s restraint, and without a word, headed straight for the ward. Qiao Yu was taken aback and hurried after him. Wei Shaoqin was the first to notice that something was off with Fu Shinian’s emotions. Almost reflexively, he positioned himself at the entrance of the ward to stop him, looking at him coldly:

"What are you going to do?"

Fu Shinian gave him a dismissive glance, uttering two light words:

"Move aside."

"Impossible. I can’t just stand by and watch you hurt Su Mu."

"Hurt?" Fu Shinian asked with a cold laugh, "I’ve given you a chance to wake her up in a normal way, but what now? She’s still in this half-dead state. Instead of letting her close off like this, I might as well give her a quick end."

"You tried before, and you didn’t wake her up."

Fu Shinian smiled faintly, "I didn’t before, but that doesn’t mean I can’t now."

"I can’t let you in."

Fu Shinian looked at him for a few seconds and, before anyone else could react, swung his fist, knocking Wei Shaoqin aside with a punch. As Wen Han and Qiao Yu prepared to step forward, he cast a fierce glance at everyone, stopping them with just one sentence:

"Su Mu is my wife."

Wen Han halted, and Qiao Yu also let out a long sigh of relief, understanding that Fu Shinian had not completely lost his sanity.

As everyone watched Fu Shinian walk in and lock the door from the inside, making it impossible for anyone else to enter, Wei Shaoqin anxiously wanted to kick the door down but was stopped by Jiang Bei. Wei Shaoqin looked at her, puzzled, as she hadn’t said a word to stop him since Fu Shinian had decided to enter:

"What’s the matter with you? Don’t you know how badly he’s hurt Su Mu? Why didn’t you stop him earlier?"

Jiang Bei looked at Wei Shaoqin:

"After her mother’s death, the person Su Mu probably cared about the most was only Fu Shinian. If even he can’t wake her, we probably won’t be able to either. Since he’s so confident, let’s just let him try. It can’t possibly get worse than it is now."

Jiang Bei’s words calmed Wei Shaoqin down, but he still looked towards the door with unease.

In reality, Jiang Bei was also worried, but faced with Su Mu like this, she was at a loss.

Wen Shaoyuan seemed to be terrified by Fu Shinian from earlier, hiding in Jiang Bei’s embrace without making a sound. Jiang Bei gently patted his back and softly said,

"Shall I take you to see Grandma?"

Wen Shaoyuan nodded his head, "Okay."

Nearly an hour had passed since Fu Shinian left the hospital room, but Su Mu’s posture hadn’t changed at all. Fu Shinian stood at the doorway, staring at her back for a few seconds before striding towards Su Mu and yanking her up from the bed to press her against the wall.

She was like a zombie, only not falling to the ground thanks to Fu Shinian’s strength. Seeing Su Mu like this, Fu Shinian spoke in a cold voice,

"Su Mu, even I find your reaction hypocritical. How much longer will you keep up this act, or do you want everyone to think you’re a filial child?"

Her eyes gained a bit of focus, taking a long few seconds before settling on Fu Shinian’s face, seemingly puzzled by what he was saying.

Fu Shinian let out a light chuckle,

"Your mother has been in here for over two years, how many times have you visited? Even on the rare occasions you do come, it’s only when you’re in a bad mood or life isn’t going well for you. You only show her your discontentment. Have you ever truly given her peace of mind? Lying here, have you ever really cared? Did you ever try your best to find the best doctors for her treatment?"

"You didn’t. You didn’t even bother to hire the best caretaker for her. In fact, deep down, you’ve already given up on her. Keeping her here is just to make yourself feel better, to have someone to listen to your emotional trash when things don’t go your way. Since her existence is so meaningless to you, why bother putting on an act of caring now?"

"I didn’t!" Su Mu violently pushed him away, with such force that Fu Shinian staggered back several steps. Yet seeing Su Mu like this, Fu Shinian finally breathed a sigh of relief. Even if she was angry and furious, at least she was alive, no longer so lifelessly bleak.

Wei Shaoqin and others outside the door also heard Su Mu’s words. Although they didn’t know the specifics of their conversation, Fu Shinian was not wrong. This time, he had indeed brought Su Mu back to her senses.

Fu Shinian looked at Su Mu and chuckled,

"You say you didn’t? But what I see is exactly that. You keep her alive for yourself. You know very well that, if she were conscious, if she could speak, she would never agree with your arrangements. But to have someone from your family by your side, to ensure there was a relative in this world, you made selfish choices."

Su Mu looked at Fu Shinian as if he were a stranger, her eyes filled with loathing. But as she looked on, she slowly crouched down against the wall and curled up in the corner. Fu Shinian wanted to approach but held himself back fiercely, hearing her voice,

"Her heart only had room for my dad. She chose to commit suicide with gas on the day my dad jumped from the building, without thinking whether I could cope with losing two relatives in one day. I knew she loved my dad, but I thought she loved me, too. Only on that day did I realize she had no room for me in her heart. If she had even the slightest place for me, she wouldn’t have made that choice."

"Can you understand my feelings?" she asked tentatively, looking at Fu Shinian like a little girl who had been abandoned, "All of my dad’s debts came crashing down on me that same day. I had to deal with his funeral, take care of my mom in the hospital, and fend off those collecting debts. I didn’t mind taking it all on. I could bear even more, but they shouldn’t have abandoned me. Isn’t it common knowledge that the deceased are the ones who rest easiest? They left the hardest stuff for me. Did they ever think of me?"

"I did everything I could to snatch her back from the grip of death. I know this isn’t what she wanted, but I’m so lonely and tired... Since she didn’t want to endure the pain, then let it be. It’s okay for her to just lie here quietly. At least it lets me know I still have family, someone to stay by my side. Was I wrong?"

Su Mu crouched there, her eyes red but defiantly holding back the tears. Finally unable to bear it any longer, Fu Shinian walked over and crouched beside her, reaching out to embrace her.

At that moment, Su Mu’s hands clung to Fu Shinian’s chest, clutching his shirt tightly, and she burst into loud sobs.
